1. Product Description TheDisplaytechEMB028TFTDEVisadevelopmentboardfortheDisplaytechDT028ATFTTFTdisplaymodule.TheEMB028TFTDEVinterfaceswithanyMicrochipPICtailPlusorDisplayConnectorV1capabledevelopmentboard,suchastheExplorer16,StarterKitI/OExpansionBoard,PIC24FJ256DA210DevelopmentBoard,orGraphicsPICtailPlus3ControllerBoard.

2. External Interfaces TheEMB028TFTDEVsupportsdrivingtheDT028ATFT’sCOGIlitekILI9341TFTcontrollerviaeitheraparallel,serialor16-bitRGBinterface.WhenconnectedtothePICtailPlus™connector,eitherparallelorserialdatamodecanbeselected.WhenconnectedtotheDisplayConnectorV1,the16-bitRGBmodemustbeselected.TheILI9341isconfiguredforeachinterfaceviatheIM[3:0]pins,whichareconnectedtologichighorlogiclowbyswitchS1.Someofthemodesarenotusable.PleaseseetheDT028ATFTDatasheetandthePinConnectionTableformoreinformation.Caution:DonotconnectdevelopmentboardstoboththePICtailPlusandDisplayConnectorV1connectorsatthesametime.

2.1. Display Connector V1 (16-bit RGB) Interface

WhenconnectedtotheDisplayConnectorV1connection(RGBinterface),theILI9341configurationregistersaremanipulatedviaa3-wireSPIinterface(SCL,SDAandCS).The3-wireSPIinterfaceusesa9-bitdatalength.The9thbitindicateswhethertheremaining8-bitsrepresentdataoracommand(D/CX).Becauseofthisrequirement,theMCUmustbeprogrammedtobit-bangthisSPIconnectionastheMicrochipSPIperipheraldoesnotsupporta9-bitSPIinterface.Althoughsimilar,theI2Cportwillnotworkasithasadifferentdataprotocol.TheILI9341hasan18-bitRGBinterface,butallMicrochipgraphicsdevelopmenttoolsoutputa16-bitRGBsignal.This16-bitRGBsignalisconnectedtotheILI934118-bitRGBinterfacebytyingtheMSBsoftheredandblueRGBoutputsignalstotheMSBsofthered

andbluedisplayinputpinstoachievemaximumbrightnessofeachchannel.PleaseseethePIC24FJ256DA210DevelopmentBoardDatasheetformoreinformation.TosetthedisplaydatapinstoRGBmode,pulltheENABLEline(pin14ofdisplay)high.ToconfiguretheILI9341displaydriverforRGBmode,settheregisters0xB0,0xF6and0x3Atotheappropriatevalues.SeetheILI9341Datasheetforavailablesettings.

2.2. PICtail Plus (16-bit Parallel) Interface

TosetthedisplaydatapinstoMCUmode,pulltheENABLEline(pin14ofdisplay)low.Whenusingtheparallelinterface,allILI9341configurationregistersarewrittenorreadviathelowest8bitsoftheparallelinterface(DB7-0).TheILI9341mustbeconfiguredtoaccepta16-bitparalleldatainputviaregister0x3A(seetheILI9341Datasheet).Thereisapotentialconflictbetweenoneofthefourtouchscreenpins(XL)andthetemperaturesensorontheExplorer16board.UseswitchS2tochangetheXLsignaltoanalternatepinifthetemperaturesensorisneeded.SeeAppendixAforinstructionstomodifyarevisionAcircuitboard.

3. Backlight Power Anon-boardCAT4104VLEDdriverpowersthebacklightoftheDT028ATFTandcanbecontrolledviaaPWMsignal(CN1-93[RD0]orCN2-B11[RD0]).SeetheDT028ATFTDatasheetandtheSchematicformoreinformation.Note:Thebacklightpowersupplyrequiresa5VsupplyontheattachedMicrochipdevelopmentboard.PleasepoweryourMicrochipdevelopmentboardfromthe5Vinput.
