Baseboard Concept

All information in the next chapters is applicable to LAY0962B, HW06/14 PCB version of the

EPC35 baseboard.

The EPC35 baseboard is a cost-efficient and high reliable baseboard developed for using with

EPC35 CPU module based on Texas Instruments AM335x Cortex-A8 SoC.

Primary the EPC35 baseboard is designed for evaluation, testing and prototyping of EPC35 CPU

module enabling quick and easy start-up of customer projects.

The EPC35 baseboard has the most used interfaces like RS232, USB Host, Ethernet, CAN, RTC

over IIC interface, RGB interface and Backlight unit for TFT Displays up to 7”. The extension

connectors make it possible to create own add-on boards like WLAN, Bluetooth, GSM and so on

to support fast prototyping and software evaluation. Customers may use the EPC35 baseboard

schematics or part of them to create their own baseboard to reduce time-to-market and to

save costs of their designs.

The EPC35 baseboard uses Q7 MXM 230 pin as mating connector and has a form of 100 mm x

120 mm.

X100 – MXM Connector

The Q7 MXM Connector is used as mating connector to EPC35 CPU Module edge-fingers.

The connector has 0,5 mm pitch and counts 230 pins.

SW200 – Reset push button

The AM335x CPU can be reset by SW200 reset push button if stuffed. The reset signal is going

buffered to both Ethernet PHYceivers and buffered to extension connector X802 pin 3 as well.

BT200 – RTC Battery Holder

The battery holder for CR2032 battery for using with the external RTC DS1337 from Dallas

Semiconductor should be used to store the proper time and date information.

U205 – RTC DS1337

The AM335x CPU has an integrated RTC, which is unfortunately not low-power RTC and is not

suitable for low-power applications due to high power consumption. Therefore an external low-

power RTC DS1337 from Dallas Semiconductor connected to IIC bus is used.

The following signals of the AM335x are used: I2C0_SCL, I2C0_SDA.

X200 – Power Supply

The power supply connector is B2P-VH-B from JST.

The mating connector is VHR-2N from JST as well.

U301 – SPI Flash

For evaluation purpose the 64 Mbit SPI flash W25Q64FVSSIG from WINBOND is present on the

board. The SPI Flash may be used as booting device or as storage device.

The following signals of the AM335x are used: SPI0_CS0, SPI0_SCLK, SPI0_D0, SPI0_D1.

X300/X301 – 4 wire resistive Touch

The most TFT Displays up to 7” are used with 4-wire resistive touch.

The X300 is FFC connector 04FMS-1.0SP-TF from JST.

The X301 is standard single row pin header with 2.54 mm pin pitch. The signals are the same

as on the X300 connector.

Analog Inputs AIN0 to AIN4 can be optional changed via resistor array on the left side of X301

to adapt the signals from touch to suitable AIN’s for different 4-wire touch screens. The

resistors are places pad on pad for each AIN signal to avoid incorrect configuration.

The AM335x signal ECAP0_IN_PWM0_OUT is used as Backlight Enable.

X400– RJ45 connector for 10/100 Mbit/s Ethernet 1

The 10/100 Mbit/s Ethernet is accessible at X400 - RJ-45 Ethernet jack with integrated

magnetics. The LED for LINK (green) is integrated in the connector.

The AM335x signals MII1 are used for Ethernet 1.

X4001– RJ45 connector for Gbit/s Ethernet 2

The Gigabit/s Ethernet is accessible at X4001 - RJ-45 Ethernet jack with integrated magnetics.

The LEDs for LINK (green) and SPEED (yellow) are integrated in the connector.

The AM335x signals GPMC_A0 to GPMC_A11 are used for Ethernet 2.

X500– USB Host 2.0 chassis socket type A for two USB Ports

The USB 2.0 Hosts are accessible at X500 USB chassis socket type A. The lower port 1 is still

configured as USB Host. To activate the upper port 2 and to use it as Host the jumper at X501

pin 4 and pin 5 must be set.

X501– Pin header for USB Port 2 Signals

The USB signals for port 2 can be used fromX501 standard 2.54 mm single row pin header if

the upper socket is not used or is not stuffed. The jumper at X501 pin 4 and 5 must be set to

use the upper USB port 2 as Host.

X603– Pin header for CAN1

The CAN1 signals for port 1 can be used from X603 standard 2.54 mm double row pin header.

The CAN1 interface is galvanic isolated. The connection to SUB-D can be easy made with

ribbon cable. The AM335x signals UART1_RTSn, UART1_CTSn are used for CAN1.

X604– Pin header for CAN2

The CAN2 signals for port 2 can be used from X604 standard 2.54 mm double row pin header.

The CAN2 interface is galvanic isolated. The connection to SUB-D can be easy made with

ribbon cable. The AM335x signals UART0_RTSn, UART0_CTSn are used for CAN2.

X700– Pin SUB-D RS485 - Female

The RS485 is accessible at X700 – SUB-D connector if stuffed. The RS485 interface is galvanic

isolated. The AM335x signals UART1_RXD, UART1_TXD are used for receive and transmit and

MCASP0_FSR is used as DATA ENABLE signal of RS485 transmitter.

X701– Pin SUB-D RS232 - Male

The RS232 interface is accessible at X701 SUB-D connector. The AM335x signals UART0_RXD,

UART0_TXD signals are used without UART0_ RTS and UART0_CTS signals for flow control.

X800/X801/X802– Pin header extension connectors

The X800, X801 and X802 are standard 2.54 mm single row pin headers and can be used for

extensions, like customer adapters and for general purpose.
