Embedded Librarianship: Physical Worlds & Virtual Worlds

Serving Patrons wherever they are
School Library Example
• Embedding the library through social media/webmaster
• Information literacy skills 21st Century
• Embracing Web 2.0 & user-generated content
• Content evaluation & curation
• Mobile apps
Virtual Library Example
• Embedding library services in virtual spaces
• International information literacy
• Embracing Web 3.0
• Global spaces, virtual worlds (Skype, Minecraft, & MOOCs)
“What we’re trying to do is have the library be wherever you are.” Nancy Roderer, John Hopkins Welch Medical Library http://www.insidehighered.com/news/2010/06/09/hopkins
Physical World Embedded Librarian
Print is no longer king of the information hierarchy.
Information literacy includes all formats: print, digital, audio, video, logos, images, social media, apps, and “transmedia.”
Integrating Information Literacy: the challenge of the embedded librarian
The game has quickly changed.
Time to make your move, strategically balancing tradition and innovation.
Information Literacy is like breathing.
Information Inhalation
• Literature appreciation
• Evaluation of online sources
• Formats of information
• Reading
Information Exhalation
• User-generated
• Content curation
• Web 2.0
• Writing
• Video production

Print or ebooks: We like both!
What are digital footprints? Am I creating them?
Digital Citizenship
Global Network
Distance is no longer relevant. Anyone can share user-generated across the globe.
Creating a personal & professional learning network is crucial.
Problem: The blurry line between personal / professional life requires balance, ethics, and a clear focus of intent.
USE WIKIS to EMBED IL for patrons.
Integrating Information Literacy Instruction as Needed
Media Mondays and Wiki Wednesdays
EEE Bar & Brown Bag Lunches
An embedded librarian shares resources and information literacy in
numerous formats: both synchronous and
asynchronous.
Problems with WIKIS
• Different skill levels of users
• Reluctance to embrace new tools (staff)
• Lack of time to train users
• Why reinvent the wheel? (Because learning the tool is important.)
Social Media & PLNs
The way we search has changed. Our first “go-to” places are:
David Ferriero, Archivist of the US stated, “Students believe if it isn’t online, it doesn’t exist.” ALISE 2012
Teaching information literacy is now TOP priority for school
librarians.
Web 3.0 & the Rise of a Networked Generation
We all live in virtual worlds, whether or not we have avatars.
Virtual World Embedded Librarian
Dissertation Topic
Virtual World Librarianship Examples
• Exhibits, Museums, Displays
• ACRL Virtual World Interest Group Meetings
• Immersive Learning Environments
• Historical Simulations
• Reference Work
• Information Literacy Integration
Global Information Literacy Panel
The library and the librarian
are not synonymous. Take a risk and go where no librarian has gone before!
“It may be that the great age of libraries is waning, but I am here to tell you that the great age of librarians is just beginning. It’s up to you to decide if you want to be a part of it.” ~T. Scott Plutchak

My Embedded World …or… How I Got Started As a Librarian In Blackboard
Amanda Pape Tarleton State University “Embedded Librarianship: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly” Panel presentation at Texas Library Association Conference Fort Worth – April 27, 2013
Spring 2008 – Children’s Literature
Summer 2009 – teach the course

Classes” – April Aultman Becker

Make It Easy
What I LIKE about Blackboard Learn 9.1 SP 10:
Easy to Add Content Area
Embed Eye-catching Mashups
Slideshare good for step-by-step instructions
Include the Powerpoint as an attachment.
Upload screencasts to YouTube
Sometimes a YouTube video meets an immediate learning need
Illustrate your content with Flickr mashups
Use Flickr photos to highlight library events or displays that tie into curriculum
What I HATE about Blackboard Learn 9.1 SP 10
Statistics are broken
Reports not
reliable
Informal Student Survey
What statistics I could pull from Blackboard this term indicate - of the students in this course accessed Library Resources content. 88%
Not useful --------------------------------------Very useful
“I used it a lot this semester and it saved me time, and helped when I was working on things when the library was closed. “
Informal Survey of Tarleton Librarians
Assuming those who did not respond do not have a Blackboard log-in.
For those embedded: they are in 3 to 6 sections of 1 to 5 courses.
Library-specific discussion forum (read/posted) 1 14%
Read other course discussion forums 1 14%
Posted in other discussion forums 0 0%
Sent Blackboard e-mails/messages 1 14%
Replied to Blackboard e-mails/messages 2 29%
Announcements (you posted some) 1 14%
Added to library-specific content area 2 29%
Other 0 0%
None of these 1 14%
Blackboard features used by other Tarleton embedded librarians
Comments: “Great link to the online students who might otherwise feel like they have no library support.” “appreciate the help and seem to benefit from it.” but “they use the embedded librarian feature very infrequently.” Students in blended classes “are more inclined to call, email, or come to library to find me than they are to post their questions to Blackboard. Perhaps, if I get more proactive about posting relevant tips and materials, the students will take advantage of having access to librarian help via Blackboard. Still, they may not want to expose their questions to their classmates and/or teacher and will continue to not interact with me via Blackboard. Not sure at this point. “
Time will tell.

faculty response
You have fast
become valuable
to our program
and school.
While I appreciate
your presence, this
makes the library too
easy for my
students.
We get a lot of support from your
library and will continue taking
advantage of the services you
offered.
student response
I am so thankful for the library
tab. I can't believe no one has
ever pointed it out. I sure could
have used it before. I suppose I
just assumed it was library info
not actual useful material.
Are you, like, a
teacher, or like, a
librarian, or both?
Thank you so much for
your help. Your time
and expertise is
greatly appreciated!
librarian response
Sometimes it’s hard
to draw the line
between librarian
and professor or
between a helper
and librarian.
I don’t have the
time to do this
right.
It takes more time to write
answers to questions than to say
them.
