Strong Disconnect!
MLIS bashed as worthless and Librarianship a dying profession:
– Forbes: “No. 1 Worst Master's Degree For Jobs: Library and Information Science”
– Hiring Librarian: “Do not go to library school. Librarianship is a dying profession.”
![Page 10: Embracing the non traditional](https://reader031.vdocuments.net/reader031/viewer/2022020803/54437acbb1af9f700a8b456a/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Why the Disconnect?
Librarianship is Highly Specialized
• Stereotype of Dewey, Books and Hair Buns.
• Bureau of Labor Statistics’ employment projection data does not categorize and include “non-traditional jobs Librarianship”
• Employers rarely recognized non traditional vs. traditional categorization: o Create striking job titles to attract
talent and boast
![Page 11: Embracing the non traditional](https://reader031.vdocuments.net/reader031/viewer/2022020803/54437acbb1af9f700a8b456a/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
– Stop Labels of “Untraditional” vs. “Traditional”
– Eliminate hardline where librarianship ends and begins– Outside World Does not perceive such divisions, why
should we?
– As Information evolves, so will framework of our profession– True across all industries
– Embrace so recognized as part of modern librarianship
– No matter what you call it, skills are increasingly key in innovative world
Create New Tradition of Librarianship
