Chapter 1: Installation Overview and Requirements

This manual is a guide to installing EMC (R) Backup Advisor. It contains all the information necessary to install the product’s components. This document is a companion guide to the EMC Backup Advisor 2.0 Administration Guide and the EMC Backup Advisor 2.0 User Guide.

This chapter describes:

• EMC Backup Advisor Components on page 13• System Requirements on page 13• Application and Device Support on page 16• Gathering Backup Application Information Remotely on page 18

EMC Backup Advisor ComponentsEMC Backup Advisor is comprised of two components:

• The Server component includes all of the server processes required for EMC Backup Advisor to run. It also includes a web server from which the graphical user interface can be launched. For NetWorker TM users, the Server component requires NetWorker Management Console (NMC), and uses the NMC database as a repository for data collection. For non NetWorker systems, you can configure the server package to use either an embedded iAnyWhere database, which is installed automatically, or an external database

• The Collector component is the process that gathers data from an application or device. A Collector is automatically installed on the Backup Advisor server when you install the server component. You can install the Server component onto other devices in the environment to provide enhanced data collection

System RequirementsThis section describes the minimum system requirements for both the Server and Collector components.

Server RequirementsThe Server component can run on either Solaris or Windows. For NetWorker users, the server component requires that the NetWorker Management Console (NMC) version 3.2.1 is installed on the same machine. For users of earlier versions of NetWorker Management Console, NMC must be upgraded before performing an installation of EMC Backup Advisor. For instructions on performing an upgrade of NMC, please review the NMC documentation.

To gather information from a backup server remotely, you may need additional software on the server. For more details see the section entitled "Gathering Backup Application Information Remotely" on page 18. The minimum operating system requirements for installing the server on each platform are as follows.

Gathering Backup Application Information RemotelyEMC Backup Advisor can gather data from a backup application using the Collector process. To monitor a backup application in this way, you may need to install additional software onto the EMC Backup Advisor Server and complete the additional steps to authorize the EMC Backup Advisor server to gather data remotely. The following sections detail the steps to monitor each backup application from a Collector running on the EMC Backup Advisor server, including:• EMC NetWorker• Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM)• VERITAS Backup Exec• VERITAS NetBackup• HP Data Protector• Oracle RMAN

NetWorkerTo gather information remotely from NetWorker software, you must install the NetWorker client software on the Collector host. EMC Backup Advisor uses commands such as mminfo and nsradmin to communicate with the NetWorker server. It is important that the NetWorker server can resolve the hostname of the EMC Backup Advisor server, otherwise it will not be authorized to gather information.

Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM)To gather information remotely from TSM, you must install the TSM Client package on the EMC Backup Advisor server. If the EMC Backup Advisor server is running on a Windows based system, the administrative components required by Backup Advisor are not installed by default during the TSM Client installation. To install the administrative components, customize the installation when installing the TSM Client by performing the following steps.

1. Choose Custom from the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Client Install Wizard as shown in Figure 1.

9. To enable Backup Advisor to monitor the remote TSM server, specify the name and password for the TSM administrator.

VERITAS Backup ExecYou can monitor VERITAS Backup Exec remotely from the Collector running on the EMC Backup Advisor Server if the server is installed on Windows. You cannot monitor VERITAS Backup Exec remotely from an EMC Backup Advisor Server running on Solaris or Linux. To monitor VERITAS Backup Exec from Windows, no additional software is required, although the EMC Backup Advisor service must run as a named user. Data collection fails if you are using the Local System account.

VERITAS NetBackupTo monitor a VERITAS NetBackup Server remotely, the NetBackup Server software must be installed on the EMC Backup Advisor server. The server itself does not need to be running, but the binaries included in the server package are required. After installing the NetBackup Server package on the EMC Backup Advisor Server, the host must be added to the list of authorized servers on the master server being monitored.

To configure a NetBackup server running on a UNIX machine:

1. Add the name of the collector host to the bp.conf file on the NetBackup Server by adding the following line to the usr/openv/netbackup/bp.conf' file.

SERVER = collectorhost

2. Replace collectorhost with the hostname of the EMC Backup Advisor server. This hostname needs to be resolvable by the NetBackup server.

3. Restart the NetBackup Server.

To configure a NetBackup server running on a Windows machine:

1. Launch the NetBackup Administration Console.

2. Open the Master Server Properties window.

3. Select the Servers tab.

4. Add the name of the Collector host to the Additional Servers list to allow access to the Master Server as shown in Figure 5.

HP Data ProtectorTo monitor a HP Data Protector server remotely, the HP Data Protector client software must be installed on the same machine as the client. Specifically, the UI component of the DP Client software must be installed so the collector has access to the omnirpt command. The user running the Collector process must be configured on the Cell Manager to have permission to run reports. It is only possible for one Collector to monitor one Data Protector Cell Manager remotely. For more details on configuring Data Protector monitoring, review the EMC Backup Advisor Administrator’s Guide.

Oracle RMANTo monitor an Oracle server remotely, the Oracle client software must be installed on the same machine as the Collector. For more details on configuring RMAN monitoring, review the EMC Backup Advisor 2.0 Administrator Guide.

Chapter 2: Using an External Database

EMC Backup Advisor requires a database. For NetWorker customers, EMC Backup Advisor shares the database that is installed by NMC, and an external database is not permitted. In non NetWorker environments, you can use either an iAnyWhere database that is included with the Server component or an external database. EMC Backup Advisor supports the following external databases:

• Oracle in Solaris environments • Microsoft SQL Server in Windows environments

This chapter describes how to configure each of these databases. Skip these sections if you are using NetWorker software.

This chapter contains the following sections:

• "Prerequisites" on page 23• "Configuring Oracle" on page 24• "Configuring Microsoft SQL Server" on page 27

PrerequisitesThe following prerequisites apply to the databases used with EMC Backup Advisor.

Supported Database VersionTable 2 contains the supported versions of each database.

Database Size LimitationsEMC Backup Advisor stores two types of data: configuration data and data gathered by Collectors about the devices and applications that are being monitored:

Table 2. Supported Databases

24EMC Backup Advisor 2.0 Installation Guide

24

• Configuration data includes information on the configuration of EMC Backup Advisor itself. This information is maintained by the controller process and is generally static and small in size

• The data that is gathered by Collectors can become quite large due to the dynamic nature of the collected data. As a result, it is maintained separately from the configuration data

The default names for the two data stores are config and datamine. You can modify these names during the installation process. The recommended minimum sizes for these databases are shown in Table 3.

The config data store should not grow much in size above the minimum recommendation, but the size of the datamine data store depends significantly on the size of the enterprise in which the product is deployed and the type and frequency that the data is collected. For large or long-term installations, you should monitor the space and increase it according to usage.

After creating the two data stores, create the user IDs that will be used by the Backup Advisor application to access them. We recommend that you create a user named config and a user named datamine and make each the owner with the appropriate access for the relevant data store. The application uses these logins when connecting to the data store. Grant them full access to create and drop tables as well as to update the tables that have been created.

Configuring OracleTo use Oracle as a EMC Backup Advisor repository, you need to install and configure the Oracle database software. This section details the steps required to configure Oracle for use by EMC Backup Advisor.

Installing OracleOracle database software has two components:

• The server component, which is the core database software that manages the data within the database and itself

• The client component, which allows client applications such as EMC Backup Advisor to connect to the server and use the database

You can install the EMC Backup Advisor server on the same machine as the Oracle server software or on a different machine. If you install EMC Backup Advisor on a separate machine, then the you must install the Oracle client software on the EMC Backup Advisor server.

If the EMC Backup Advisor server is running on the same host as the Oracle server, you must install the Oracle client software. In Oracle 9, the server and client components are automatically installed on a server when you install the Oracle Server. With Oracle 10, the Oracle client is not automatically installed. If using Oracle 10, ensure that you also install the Oracle client software.

Chapter 2: Using an External Database

25

Configuring the DatabaseTo configure the Oracle database:

1. Create a single Oracle database (eba) with two table spaces for the config and datamine data stores. Name the first table space config and the second table space datamine. Modify the table space names if required.

2. Configure the Oracle database to allow all processes to connect to the database simultaneously. In addition to the processes that connect at run time, other processes connect to the database during installation. Failure to size the number of processes that connect to the database may cause the installation to fail. We recommend that you allow a minimum of 50 processes to connect to each database. To change this value, alter the value of the processes variable in the init$ORACLE_SID.ora configuration file.

Note: Changing this value may vary the Oracle shared memory requirements; refer to the Oracle documentation for more information.

3. Specify the database character set to be UTF-8 and not the default Oracle configuration, US7ASCII. Failure to configure the database to use UTF-8 will mean that the product may fail to work in locales that use characters that are not supported by ASCII.

If using dbassist to create the database, use Custom configuration to specify the character set. When entering information about the ORACLE_SID choose the button to specify the character sets for the database. Set both the database character set value and the national character set value to UTF-8.To verify your Oracle database is configured to run in UTF-8 mode, connect to each database with sqlplus and run the following query:

select * from nls_database_parameters where parameter like '%CHARACTERSET%'This should return output similar to the following:SQL> select * from nls_database_parameters where parameter like '%CHARACTERSET%' ;PARAMETER------------------------------VALUE-----------------------------------------------------------NLS_CHARACTERSETUTF8NLS_NCHAR_CHARACTERSETUTF8

Configuring UsersCreate two users, datamine and config, within Oracle and associate each user with the table spaces specified when creating the database. Use the following syntax to create and set permissions for these users:

# Create Config UserORACLE_SID=configexport ORACLE_SIDsqlplus SYSTEM/manager<<EOSQLcreate user config identified by config

# Create a sysdm userORACLE_SID=datamineexport ORACLE_SIDsqlplus SYSTEM/manager<<EOSQLcreate user datamine identified by datamine default tablespace DATAMINE quota unlimited on DATAMINE;grant connect, resource to datamine;

Running the TNS ListenerEMC Backup Advisor requires that the TNS listener is running on the Oracle server to successfully connect to the database. Ensure that the TNS listener is running before attempting to install the EMC Backup Advisor.

Performing Routine MaintenanceThe Oracle Cost Based Optimizer uses statistics when determining the most efficient way to run a query. Due to the potentially large volumes of data stored within the EMC Backup Advisor database, it is important that these statistics are gathered and kept up to date on a regular basis, otherwise the performance of the listener and reporter processes may degrade. For most installations, daily updates should suffice. Refer to the Oracle documentation for more information.

Appendix A: Ports and Protocols

EMC Backup Advisor uses several predefined TCP ports for communication between its processes. The default settings for the assigned ports and the list of intercommunications between each of the processes are listed in Table 5:

If there is a firewall between a Collector and the server running the Controller and Listener, ensure that the firewall allows traffic destined for ports 3916 and 4001 flow from the Collector to the Controller and Listener. Also ensure that the GUI can communicate with the Collector on port 3741 (to allow the GUI to inform the Collector of changes in the Collector configuration, for example).

Figure 40 on page 60 displays a diagram of the internal EMC Backup Advisor communications process.

Table 5. Process Communications

This Process: Listens On Port: Communicates with:

Collector 3741 Controller, Listener

Controller 3916 All processes communicate with Controller

Appendix A: Ports and Protocols

EMC Backup Advisor 2.0 Installation Guide60

Figure 40. Internal EMC Backup Advisor CommunicationThe sequence of events during the Collector’s startup is as follows:

1. The Collector is started by the system (/etc/init.d or Windows Services) or manually.

2. The Collector initiates a connection to the Controller (configured during installation) and identifies itself with its host name and all aliases.

3. The Controller obtains its configuration for the host from the config database and forwards this information to the Collector. This information includes which items to monitor along with any options (user name and passwords, specific ports, time-out values, polling interval).

4. The Collector immediately starts monitoring the system upon receipt of the configuration.

5. Upon gathering data, the Collector formats the information into an XML packet, which is then sent to the Listener.

6. The Collector returns to idle, and continues polling each request at the specified interval for that request.

7. The Listener, upon receipt of a packet from the Collector, inserts the data into the database, either as a new row or as an update to data that is already present.

Appendix A: Ports and Protocols

61

In addition to these specifications, specific Collectors may require other ports to be made available. For example, collecting data through SNMP requires access from the Collector to port 161 on the node being monitored by both TCP and UDP protocols. The full details of the ports required for each application-specific module (e.g., NetWorker or VERITAS NetBackup) are out of this document’s scope. Refer to the EMC Backup Advisor Administration Guide for the appropriate products for additional information.
