Summary
“Magellan Essentials” and “Magellan” are temporary code names for two new dynamic
Knowledge Worker clients designed for the Documentum 6 platform
The Magellan clients build on the new services orientation of the Documentum 6
platform by providing a modern service-oriented architecture (SOA) client to
communicatewith the platform via Web Services
Magellan will support web 2.0 functionality, such as wikis, blogs, social networking,
RSS feeds, tagging and more
Magellan represents the next generation eRoom, though eRoom will continue to be
supported and enhanced for many years to come
Webtop will continue to offer specialized content management services NOT available
in either Magellan client, and will remain the client of choice for advanced content
management users
The Magellan clients require the Documentum 6 Content Server or above
Magellan Essentials will be provided at no charge to existing Content Server
customers; Magellan will be a low cost offer that is price-competitive with SharePoint
The Magellan clients will interoperate with WDK-based clients, and a migration utility
will be available for customers that wish to migrate from eRoom to Magellan

General
Question: What is Magellan?
Answer: Early in 2009, EMC Documentum will release a new client, temporarily
codenamed “Magellan,” that has been specifically designed for enterprise
Knowledge Workers. This new client will provide a dynamic user interface for
the EMC Documentum 6 Content Server. It is designed from the ground-up
using Web Services and is an attractive, easy-to-use, browser-based client
designed for widespread adoption within an organization. Magellan will
interoperate with other Documentum clients so user communities can use the
client that suits them best, while leveraging a common ECM infrastructure. A
“Magellan Essentials” client will be released late in the second half of 2008
that will provide basic content services at no cost to Content Server
customers.
To summarize, “Magellan” will be available in two forms:
“Magellan Essentials” - will be offered late in the second half of 2008 without
any client access license cost and will provide BCS (Basic Content Services –
check in/check out, versioning, lifecycle, etc.).
“Magellan” - will be offered early in 2009 and will provide support for team
collaboration, web 2.0 technologies, information intelligence, and mobile
access in addition to Magellan Essentials’ basic content services. Magellan’s
primary goals are to resolve the following problems that Knowledge Workers
routinely face:
Proliferation of information silos
Working in many dispersed teams
Finding relevant information quickly
Spotting relationships between types of information
Locating experts in different geographies efficiently
Personalizing, organizing, and sharing information
Ensuring information is secure
Adhering to IT and Legal requirements for compliance and governance
Question: Why are you introducing these new clients to the market?
Answer: The introduction of the Magellan clients builds on the new services orientation
of the Documentum 6 platform by providing a modern service-oriented
architecture (SOA) client that communicateswith the platform via Web
Services. A customer will receive immediate benefits including a better
performing and more efficient information infrastructure, easier client
customization, and quick access to modern UI frameworks such as wikis,
blogs, social networking, RSS feeds and more.

Question: Does Magellan replace the Webtop client?
Answer: No. Webtop offers a variety of powerful ECM services that will not be
included in the Magellan clients. While Magellan addresses the most common
needs of many business users, customers requiring advanced ECM
functionality or highly customized services will prefer the Webtop client.
Magellan clients will not provide full feature parity with Webtop but will
include new capabilities not available in other Documentum clients such as
support for RSS feeds, tagging, blogs and wikis.
Question: Do the Magellan clients replace eRoom?
Answer: Yes. The Magellan clients represent the next generation of secure team
collaboration. While eRoom will be supported for many years to come, the
Magellan clients are intended to become the upgrade path for current eRoom
users. Magellan blends the ease-of-use of the eRoom user experience with an
updated user interface, support for new web 2.0 interaction patterns, and the
power and flexibility that are only available from the Documentum 6 Server.
Question: What kind of support will be made available for migrating to this new client?
Answer: EMC recognizes the importance of its installed customer base and is planning
an easy migration for current eRoom customers. In partnership with Crown
Partners, EMC will provide a migration utility free of charge to eRoom
customers leveraging Buldoser, the proven migration utility from Crown.
Question: Will Magellan be available in other languages?
Answer: Magellan will be localized into the same Tier 1 languages that are supported by
the Documentum platform today, including French, German, Italian, Japanese
and Korean.
Technology
Question: What kind of infrastructure is required to run Magellan?
Answer: Magellan supports the major SQL database platforms, UNIX, Linux, and MS
Windows operating systems, browsers, portals, application servers, and
development standards supported by the Documentum family of products.
With the Magellan products, EMC continues to provide the industry's only true
vendor agnostic information workplace architecture. The Magellan clients
leverage the Documentum Content Server and will require either version 6 or
the upcoming 6.5 release of the Content Server.
Question: Is Magellan interoperable with existing enterprise applications?
Answer: The Magellan clients will take into account existing applications such as WDK-
based clients and eRoom. WDK clients will be interoperable with both
Magellan clients. In addition, the Magellan clients will provide a replacement

option for eRoom. EMC will provide easy migration capabilities to eRoom
customers. The Magellan clients will also be able to leverage other EMC
offerings for business applications including desktop integration, offline
support, productivity applications integration, SharePoint integrations and
mobile device support.
Question: I use eRoom as a standalone product today. Do you have a standalone version
of Magellan planned for customers that do not want to deploy a full
Documentum Content Server?
Answer: Standalone versions of the Magellan products are planned so customers
deploying Magellan within departments or mid-sized organizations can easily
start with a single-server installation, and expand to a multi-server or
enterprise-wide deployment over time. The standalone products will have full
upward compatibility with the Documentum Content Server so content and
configurations can be easily moved to the full Content Server product when
necessary.
