Getting Started (Dell EMC PowerEdge) 2This topic explains how the Management Pack for Dell EMC PowerEdge works and how to get started using it.

How the Management Pack Works

The Management Pack for Dell EMC PowerEdge uses the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) to access your cluster/server's Integrated Dell Remote Access Controller (iDRAC) and imports critical monitoring data such as resources, relationships, metrics, and alerts into vRealize Operations Manager.

This management pack works in conjunction with the Management Pack for vSAN to discover and create VXRail Cluster resources. To obtain cluster resources, management pack users must also have the vSAN MP installed and configured, and if a Blade/Rack server is related to a VMWare Host system, which is related to a VMware vSAN Cluster, the cluster resource will be created.

How to Get Started

To get started monitoring VxRail and PowerEdge from within vRealize Operations, see the following topics:

1 Review the System Requirements (Dell EMC PowerEdge) and have the following information available:

n Management IP for your cluster/server's iDRAC

n SNMPv2c or v3 credentials

n vSphere credentials (to create relationships to the ESXi host)

2 Install the management pack. See: Chapter 4 Installing the Management Pack (Dell EMC PowerEdge).

3 Configure the management pack. See: Chapter 5 Configuring the Management Pack (Dell EMC PowerEdge). If you encounter any Test Connection errors when configuring, see: Chapter 6 Troubleshooting the Management Pack (Dell EMC PowerEdge).

System Requirements (Dell EMC PowerEdge) 3Before installing and configuring the Management Pack, ensure your system meets the following requirements:

Important To obtain cluster resources, management pack users configuring for VxRail must also install and configure the Management Pack for vSAN on their vROps system.

Hardware: The Management Pack supports the following R-, M-, and T-series generation Dell EMC server types:

n 12g

n 13g

n 14g

iDRAC Firmware: Servers must be equipped with iDRAC v7+ with firmware version 1.30.30+.

Important SNMPv2c or SNMPv3 must be configured on all Dell EMC servers.

Connection iDRAC hostname or IP address.

Important If the address of your Chassis Monitoring Console (CMC)is different than that of your iDRAC, you must list it in addition to your iDRAC if you wish for the Management Pack to return chassis metrics. See Creating an Adapter Instance (Dell EMC PowerEdge).

The Management Pack collects data via SNMPv2c or SNMPv3 via default port 161.

Important See Creating an Adapter Instance (Dell EMC PowerEdge) for information on supported host formats.

Credentials SNMPv2c read-only community string -or- SNMPv3 User Name and Password

Important The Management Pack requires a least-privileged SNMP user account of read-only.

Important In order to retrieve alerts that are triggered directly by iDRAC/SNMP, the adapter instance must use SNMP v3.

Important vCenter credentials are required to create relationships to the ESXi host. To make the relationships between the monitored cluster/server and the ESXi host attached to it, the management pack must query the vSphere server API. To do this, configure the management pack with vCenter hostname and the credentials of a user with permissions to the hosts in vCenter. We recommend using the same credentials set as the VROps vSphere adapter for consistency.

Installing the Management Pack (Dell EMC PowerEdge) 4This Management Pack is installed using a .pak file.

Procedure

1 Log in to vRealize Operations as an admin user.

2 From the top navigation bar, select Administration. In the left panel, the default Solutions

view will be selected. In the right panel, click the Add icon.

Note If you are using vROps 7.5, Solutions will have two subcategories: Configuration and Repository. Select Repository and scroll down to Other Management Packs and select Add a Management Pack to install a new management pack. Refer to the second screenshot below if needed.

3 The Add Solution window will appear. Browse to the location of the saved .pak file, then click Upload.

4 Click Next when the upload has finished.

5 Read and accept the End User License Agreement (EULA), then click Next.

6 Click Finish when the installation process is complete.

Important The installation utility creates a specific adapter folder and.jar file in the $VCOPS_BASE/user/plugins/inbound folder.

Important Each Credential Kind has the option to include vSphere credentials, which are required to make relationships to the ESXi host. To do this, configure the management pack with vCenter hostname and the credentials of a user with permissions to the hosts in vCenter. We recommend using the same credentials set as the vROps vSphere adapter for consistency.

Before you can begin using the Management Pack, you must create an adapter instance to identify the host from which the Management Pack will retrieve data.

1 From the top navigation bar, select Administration. In the right panel, the Solutions list will be displayed.

2 Select Dell EMC Compute from the Solutions list on the right.

3 Click the Configure icon. The Manage Solution window will appear.

Important Click the Add icon above the Instance Name list on the left to create multiple adapter instances.

4 In the Manage Solution window, enter the following information:

a Instance Settings:

n Display Name: A name for this particular instance of the Management Pack

n Description: Optional, but it can be helpful to describe multiple instances of the Management Pack.

b Basic Settings:

n Managment IP: The Management Pack supports the following host formats:

n Individual hostname or IP address (IPv4/IPv6 are supported)

n IP range (e.g., 192.168.0.32-192.168.0.67, 10.10.01.0-10.10.0.254)

Note If the IP range for your Chassis Monitoring Console (CMC) is different than that of your iDRAC, you must list it separately here to return chassis metrics.

n Credential: Select the credential you created when Creating a Credential (Dell EMC

PowerEdge), or click the Add icon now to create one.

c Advanced Settings:

n Collectors/Groups: Default Collector/Group is automatically selected. Click the drop-down menu if you want to run the collection on a different node.

n SNMP Port: Enter the UDP port to connect to SNMP; default port is 161.

n Retries: Enter the number of times you want the adapter to retry to connect to the specified host before the SNMP request times out; default value is 2 retries.

n Timeout Interval:Enter the maximum amount of time (seconds) for the adapter to wait to timeout when trying to connect to the specified host; default value is 30 seconds.

n Socket Timeout Interval (Seconds): Specify the maximum amount of time (seconds) for the adapter to wait for an incoming socket connection; default value is 2 seconds. Note that a timeout of 0 is interpreted as an infinite timeout.

n Discovery Timeout Interval (s): Enter the maximum amount of time (seconds) to wait for discovery to complete against a given system; default value is 120 seconds.

n Collection Timeout Interval (s): Enter the maximum amount of time (seconds) to wait for collection to complete against a given system; default value is 180 seconds.

n Maximum Threads: Enter the maximum number of concurrent threads that the adapter instance can use to retrieve metrics from the specified targets; default value is 30. Note that this setting is for total synchronous SNMP calls to each server, not concurrent calls to the same server.

n Include SNMP Events (v3 only): Specify whether the adapter should pass alerts retrieved from the SNMP alert table; default value is false.

n Alert Cancel Hours: Specify the maximum age (in hours) for SNMP alerts; default value is 24 hours.

n Support Autodiscovery: Default setting is True, which allows the adapter instance to create resources for you. This should not be set to False.

Important In order to maintain a consistent collection interval of five minutes, it is recommended that an adapter instance collects on no more than 16 total blade or rack servers. For a collection interval value of ten minutes, we recommend that your adapter instance collects on no more than 32 blade/rack servers.

5 Click Test Connection to test the configured connection information. If you encounter any errors, see: Chapter 6 Troubleshooting the Management Pack (Dell EMC PowerEdge).

6 Click Save Settings and Close to save your adapter instance.

Configuring the Properties File (Dell EMC PowerEdge)

You may want to further customize your adapter instance configuration using the DellEMCCompute.properties file.

Prerequisites


Properties

The following additional configuration settings can be found in the DellEmcCompute.properties file located in the $VCOPS_BASE/user/plugins/inbound/dell_emc_compute_adapter_3/conf/ folder. You can modify the entries in the file, and they will be read in during the next collection.

After you add an adapter instance, you will most likely want to validate the data that it collects in vROps. Wait until one collection cycle is complete and the Collection Status for the adapter instance on the Solutions page shows as "Data Receiving".

Troubleshooting the Management Pack (Dell EMC PowerEdge) 6Once you have finished Chapter 4 Installing the Management Pack (Dell EMC PowerEdge) and Chapter 5 Configuring the Management Pack (Dell EMC PowerEdge), check the Collection State and Collection Status for the adapter instance on the Solutions page. If they show as Not Collecting or No Data Receiving, respectively, the following troubleshooting topics can help you diagnose and correct common problems with your adapter instance.

Test Connection Errors

When Creating an Adapter Instance (Dell EMC PowerEdge), click Test Connection after entering all of your configuration settings to ensure vROps can connect to the specified host.

The following errors are possible:

SNMP IP Range Incorrectly Formatted

Error Message: Unable to establish a valid connection to the target system. SNMP IP range formatted incorrectly.

Description: Ensure the specified SNMP IP range is formatted correctly. The Management Pack supports the following host formats:

n Individual hostname or IP (IPv4 or IPv6)

n IP range (e.g., 192.168.0.32-192.168.0.67, 10.10.0.0-10.10.1.255)

n IP CIDR notation range (e.g., 10.6.14.0/24, 2620:0:2d0:200:1f00:400::7/120)

n Any of the above in a comma-separated list

Important If the SNMP IP range is greater than 400 IP addresses, Test Connection may fail.

Important If the IP range for your Chassis Monitoring Console (CMC) is different than that of your iDRAC, you must list it separately here to return chassis metrics.

No Server Found in SNMP IP Range

Error Message: Unable to establish a valid connection to the target system. No server found in SNMP IP range.

Description: Verify the following items are configured properly:

n Ensure the server is on and configured to use SNMPv2c or SNMPv3.

n Ensure the vROps server IP has permission to access SNMP.

n Ensure the SNMP community string/username is correct.

n Ensure the management port IP is in the IP range.

No Dell EMC Server to VMware Host System Relationships Created

If relationships between your Dell EMC Server and VMware Host are not created, verify the following:

n Ensure the Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) is set correctly on the iDRAC.

n Ensure vSphere credentials were provided when Creating a Credential (Dell EMC PowerEdge).

Server Rediscovery Fails

Problem: If you remove a blade or rack server from vROps and try to add it back later, the Management Pack will fail to rediscover the server.

Cause: For each adapter instance, the Management Pack stores the IP addresses of known servers in the server_ips<Adapter Resource Internal ID>.properties file found in $VCOPS_BASE/user/plugins/inbound/dell_power_edge_adapter/work/. You can find the Adapter Resource Internal ID by navigating to Inventory Explorer , selecting an adapter resource, and inspecting the Internal ID column for that resource.

If a server’s IP address is not deleted from this file when it is removed from vROps, the adapter will be unable to rediscover that server.

Solution: Delete the server’s IP address from the server_ips<Adapter Resource Internal ID>.properties file. The adapter will then be able to rediscover the server.

Important If an adapter instance is already collecting on an IP address, no other adapter instances will be able to discover that resource.

Adapter and Collector Log Files

You can review adapter errors in the adapter and collector log files, which can be viewed in the vROps UI or in an external log viewer.

n Adapter log files are located in the $VCOPS_BASE/user/log/adapters/DellEmcComputeAdapter/ folder.

n Collector log files are located in the $VCOPS_BASE/user/log/ folder.

To set the base log level for the collector in vROps:

1 Navigate to Administration > Logs.

2 Expand the MASTER folder, then select the COLLECTOR folder.

3 Click the Edit Properties icon.

4 In the Root logger level drop-down menu, select the desired option.

n The default logging level is warning.

n To troubleshoot issues, set the logging level to info.

n To view detailed messages, including micro steps, queries, and returned results, set the logging level to debug.

Caution If you set the logging level to debug , log files can become large very quickly. Set the logging level to debug only for short periods of time.

Important The resource kinds marked with a single asterisk (*) are not collected by default. If you want to enable collection for these resources, you must set the applicable parameter in the DellEmcCompute.properties file to true. See: Configuring the Properties File (Dell EMC PowerEdge).

Important The VXRail Cluster resource is created in a unique way. It is created only if a Blade/Rack server is related to a VMWare Host system, which is related to a VMware vSAN Cluster resource. Again, the following relationship must exist: Blade/Rack server > Host System > vSAN Cluster.

Relationships

Relationships among discovered resources are also created by the management pack.

How Relationships are Collected

Relationships are returned to vROps during the second collection. Internal relationships are returned every collection. External relationships are re-calculated at the interval specified by the relationship_sync_interval properties in the DellEmcCompute.properties file, whose default value is 8 (i.e. recalculated in collection 2, 10, 18, etc.).

External relationships to VMware Host System resources are made from Blade/Rack server resources using the following methods:

1 First attempt: Matching the Blade/Rack Server's host_name metric (via vCenter) to the resource name of a VMware Host System

2 Fallback: Matching the Blade/Rack Server's fqdn metric to the resource name of a VMware Host System

To access your Dell EMC Cluster (VxRail) or Dell EMC PowerEdge Inventory Tree, select Environment from the top navigation bar, then select the applicable Dell EMC inventory tree from the left panel. Click on a resource from the inventory tree to populate details about the resource in the right panel.
