LARGE GROUP: Story (20 minutes) • Worship (5 minutes) AUDIO: Play high-energy music as kids enter. VIDEO: Theme Loop

Leader enters, dressed in running attire and wearing headphones. (The idea is that the kids hear what he/she hears in the headphones.)

OPENER Bop your head around, clearly into the music . . . then notice the kids and remove the headphones.

LEADER: “Oh, hey there! It’s good to see you, my fellow runners! I was just jamming to my favorite workout playlist. It really gets me pumped up before a run, but it’s also just fun to listen to! “If you missed last week, you might wonder why I’m talking so much about running. Well, this month, we’re talking about commitment! “If you want to run a long race like a 5K, that requires a LOT of commitment. The training . . . the cross-training . . . running in the heat, the rain, and the cold . . . you really have to be committed to see your plan through! “Then there are the things you need to prepare for that you might NOT think about. Like what happens if your shoe gets untied? How do you stop to tie it without tripping everyone behind you? Or what happens if you slow down to pick up a cup of water at the water station (act this out in slow motion) . . . but you drop the cup when they hand it to you, and it spills all over the ground? I’m telling you, that water handoff is more difficult than you might think! “Well, don’t worry, because THAT’S what we’re practicing today: our water handoff. I call it the H2O Handoff. Everyone up, and let’s divide into two teams.

Divide the kids into two equal teams. Have each team form a line and stand on top of the tarp (optional). For both teams, make sure to place an older kid at the beginning of line—since they’ll be the ones pouring the water to begin with. Make sure that the kids are adequately spaced out as they stand in line. Give a plastic cup to each person. Place the water jugs at the beginning of the line (for both teams) and place the buckets at the other end of the line. Note: If you don’t have enough kids to make two decent-sized teams, you can make this a race against the clock relay.

(Hold up one of the water jugs.) “When I say, ‘Go,’ the person on the end will pour the water from this water jug into their cup. Then that person will pour the water from their cup into the NEXT person’s cup, and so on . . . until the last person dumps the water into their team’s bucket. (Point to the buckets at the end of the lines.) “You don’t have to wait for the water to get to the end before you start again. Just keep transferring the water as quickly as you can. The first team to get enough water to the fill line marked on the bucket, wins! (Point to the fill line on one of the buckets.) “Is everyone ready? Need to do any warming up or stretching? (Stretch out your arms and fingers in an exaggerated motion.) No? Just me? Okay, let’s get started. On your mark, get set, GO! AUDIO: Fun music

Cheer for the kids and give advice if they’re moving too quickly or too slowly. Stay near the buckets so you can see which team reaches the fill line first. Celebrate the winning team.

“Nice job, everyone! I hope you feel more prepared for the H2O handoff the next time you run. I know I do! And now we’re all nice and warmed up for worship!” WORSHIP LEADER: “Before we sing and worship God together, watch this. VIDEO: Live Loud from Get Reel “I’m so glad that God has a good plan that He’s working out in our lives. The apostle Paul wrote about that in his letter to the believers in Rome. He wrote, ‘We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him.’ (Romans 8:28, NIrV) Let’s sing this song that reminds us that God is faithful and that we can be committed when we put our trust in Him! VIDEO: “You Are Faithful” Dance Moves Music Video “That was so much fun! You can have a seat.” BIBLE STORY VIDEO: Host Intro VIDEO: 252 Story VIDEO: Host Outro CLOSER SLIDE: Theme Background LEADER: “In some ways, we have it easier than ever to hear from God. your phone), or even look up the Bible on a laptop or computer. SLIDE: Bottom Line [Bottom Line] “Practice hearing from God. Say that with me.” LEADER and KIDS: [Bottom Line] “Practice hearing from God.” LEADER: “Let’s pray and ask God to help us HEAR from Him.” SLIDE: Theme Background PRAY LEADER: “Dear God, thank You for the Bible. Thank You for giving us such an amazing way to hear from You! Your wisdom is available for us all the time, in Your Word. Help us read and understand the Bible so we can hear from You. And please help us not just HEAR Your words but put them into action. We love You, and we ask these things in Jesus’ name. Amen.” DISMISS LEADER: “Hearing from God is a really important part of our training plan. Let’s side-shuffle over to Small Group and see how we can put that into practice!”

Dismiss kids to their small groups.

GETTING READY Here’s everything you need to know to get ready for this week. STORY: Communicating God’s truth in engaging ways (20 minutes) WORSHIP: Inviting people to respond to God (5 minutes) 1. Opener/Closer What You Need:

• Leader • Runner’s outfit • Headphones • Tarp(s) for the kids to stand on if your floors can’t absorb water spills • At least two, one-gallon jugs of water—i.e. at least one jug for each team (see “What You Do”) • Two empty buckets marked with a fill line (see “What You Do”) • Plastic cups (one for each kid) • Bible • Leader’s phone

Music and Sound Effects:

• Upbeat music to use as kids enter and exit the room • Fun music for the game

Large Group Visuals:

• Theme Loop Video • Theme Background Slide • Bottom Line Slide

What You Do:

• Download and print this week’s tech sheet for everyone helping with Large Group. • Download the slides and videos and have them ready to use. • Download music from a resource such as iTunes® and have it ready to play. • If your floors aren’t built to handle minor water spills, you can set out tarp(s) for the kids to stand

on. • Use a marker to draw a fill line inside both buckets, at the exact same depth. (Alternately, you

could create a fill line with a piece of masking tape.) The fill line should be slightly less than what the water of the entire gallon jug would reach—i.e. to account for some minor spills along the way. To play it safe, you could have extra jugs available so the teams don’t run out of water before they reach the fill line.

SOCIAL: Providing Time for Fun Interaction (15 minutes) Before kids arrive, take a few moments to pray for them. Thank God for giving us so many ways to hear from Him. Pray that your kids would learn all the ways they can hear from God and that they would have a better understanding of how they personally hear best from God. Ask God to give kids ideas for how they can listen to Him intently this week. 1. Early Arriver What You Need: common, everyday items What You Do:

• Welcome kids to Small Group. • Show all of the items to the kids. • Once they have seen the items, instruct kids to turn around so they can’t see the items. • Make a noise with one of the items and challenge kids to guess which item made that sound.

o Instruct kids to raise their hands when they think they know which item you’re using. Tell them that blurted-out answers don’t count.

o Call on kids to answer until someone guesses correctly. • You can do this multiple times, making a different sound each time with the same item, until kids

are able to guess what the item is. • Let the kid who guesses correctly make the next sound.

2. Opening Activity Made to Play: an activity that encourages learning through following guidelines and/or working as a group What You Need: Towels, cups or cans, and masking tape What You Do:

• Tape a start line and a finish line on the floor. • Split kids into teams of four or five. • Give each team a towel and the same amount of cups or cans each. • Tell kids they will have one minute, as a team, to build a structure on top of the towel with their

cups. • Once the minute is up, their entire team has to pull the towel across the room and cross the

finish line. • If any piece of their structure falls over, they have to go back to the start line, rebuild, and pull

again. • The first team across the finish line, wins and encourages the other teams as they try to finish.

What You Say: “That was really hard. The building part was pretty easy, but making sure it didn’t fall was tough. [Transition] Let’s head to Large Group to hear about two men who built houses, and we’ll see what happened to what they built.” Lead your group to the Large Group area.

GROUPS: Creating a Safe Place to Connect (25 minutes) 1. Sand or Rock [Talk about God | Bible Story Review] Made to Explore: an activity that extends learning through hands-on experimentation and discovery What You Need: Styrofoam bowls, toothpicks, sand, Play-Doh®, cups of water or spray bottles What You Do:

• Give each kid two bowls. • Instruct them to fill one bowl about ¼ of the way with sand (or you could do this for them ahead

of time). • Give each kid some Play-Doh and ask them to make a ball. • Ask kids to place the ball in their other bowl. • Next, they will place two toothpicks in the sand and two toothpicks in the dough so they stand

up. They can choose to place these close together or far apart. • Explain that the toothpicks represent their house and the dough represents a rock. • Now they can pour their cups of water onto the sand and dough or spray them with spray

bottles. • The toothpicks in the sand should fall down, and the toothpicks in the dough should stay

standing. • Review the Bible story and how the wise man built his house on the rock.

o We can be wise by listening to what Jesus says in the Bible. o The foolish man built his house on the sand. o We will be foolish if we don’t listen and do what Jesus says.

What You Say: “That was pretty cool. It was fun to watch how the toothpicks washed away as the sand shifted in the water. Jesus made it clear in His story that anyone who hears His words AND puts them into practice will be ready to stand strong against the storms. What Jesus meant by ‘storms’ is all the tough stuff that happens in life: problems with friends, a hard time learning something at school, something hard happening at home . . . these are all things we can get through better by hearing and doing what God says. And listening to our Bible story is just one way we can [Bottom Line] practice hearing from God.”

*2. Secret Sentence [Live for God | Application Activity] Made to Imagine: an activity that promotes empathy and facilitates concrete application through role-play and reenactment What You Need: “Secret Sentence” Activity Page, pencils or pens What You Do:

• Hand each kid a “Secret Sentence” Activity Page and pencil or pen. • Explain there are images on their paper with boxes underneath each image. • They have to discover the hidden message by writing the letter the image starts with in the box

underneath it. (For example, penguin starts with “P,” so they would write “P” in the box under the penguin.)

• You may need to help younger ones with this and make it fun by having them make the letter sound to help them discover what the letter is or give them some more hints. (For example, it comes after “O” in the alphabet).

• —Practice hearing from God—instruct them to turn their page over and draw a picture of a way they can practice hearing from God.

• Be sure and remind them of some ways they can hear from God if they need help. o Reading the Bible o Doing a devotional with their family or by themselves o Praying o Listening to their Small Group Leader, pastor, or any other person who follows Jesus

talk about Jesus • After kids finish drawing, let them share their drawings and tell the group what they drew.

What You Say: “You guys did a great job of discovering our secret sentence. Let’s all say it together. [Bottom line] Practice hearing from God. That’s right! And you did a great job of drawing one way you can practice hearing from God.” [Make it Personal] (Share a time you heard from God through the Bible, a devotional, or another person teaching you. This could be as simple as the first time you truly heard about God’s love. Keep this practical so kids understand that they can hear from God, too.)

3. Memory Verse Building [Hear from God | Memory Verse Activity] Made to Move: an activity that increases the oxygen in the brain and taps into the energy in the body What You Need: “Memory Verse Building” Activity Page, Bibles, blocks, (optional) toy grabbers and buckets What You Do:

• Tape or stick each word of the “Memory Verse Building” Activity Page to a block. Each team needs one set of eight word blocks.

• Help kids look up and read the verse together as a group. • Reread the second sentence, “But being Godly has value in every way.”

o Talk about how being Godly has so much more value than anything we could train our body for (like we learned last week).

• Split kids up into teams of four. • Place the blocks in a pile for each team on the other side of the room.

o The first kid in line runs to their pile of blocks and grabs a block only using their elbows. o Once they return, the next kid goes. They continue until all of the blocks are collected.

• Once the team has collected their blocks, they will stack them in order to make the Bible verse. (These will be numbered to help the younger ones put them in the correct order.)

• Once all teams are finished, practice saying the memory verse together again. What You Say: “Great job of building your memory verse! Practicing for something can be really hard sometimes. We have to do it over and over, and sometimes it feels like doing the same thing a bunch of times in a row. But when we [Bottom Line] practice hearing from God, we’ll get better and better at it, which will help make us more like Jesus!”

4. Pray and Dismiss [Pray to God | Prayer Activity] Made to Reflect: an activity that creates space for personal processing and application What You Need: Items from “Early Arriver” What You Do:

• Pull the items back out and lay them in front of you then hold them up one by one. • Make a sound with each item.

o You can repeat the “Early Arriver” activity quickly if most of your group wasn’t there for that activity.

• Explain that just like we have to listen carefully to know what item makes what sound, we have to listen carefully to hear from God.

• Lead kids in prayer, asking that they will be able to listen carefully to hear from God. What You Say: “You guys are so good at listening. Sometimes, we have to listen really carefully when reading our Bible to hear God, but the more we practice hearing from Him, the easier it is. I am so proud of each of you. I can’t wait until next week to hear how you guys go throughout this week and [Bottom Line] practice hearing from God. “God, I thank You for every kid that is here today and for everyone who is normally here and couldn’t be here today. I pray that we all continue to practice hearing from You through your Word, the Bible, through other people who follow You, and even by praying to You like we are right now. We are so grateful that You love us enough to talk to us. Thank You for sending us Your Son, Jesus, and loving us so much. We love You. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.” As adults arrive to pick up, prompt kids to show off their “Secret Sentence” Activity Page and tell them what they drew on the back.
