subject leader reportDeveloping and delivering an outstanding PE Curriculum for all children Investing much of our PE & Sports Premium funding in up-dating and developing the PE curriculum at Castleview has helped to improve teaching and learning while increasing opportunities for children to extend their physical and social skills. Initially we bought into Create Developments real PE programme, by sending three teachers for training and later had two whole-school training days to raise awareness throughout the school of the enhanced status of Physical Education. Two more new staff have been on training this year and three previously trained staff have attended additional real gym training.

This year we have employed the services of a Lead Practitioner, in a consultative capacity, to support and encourage staff in teaching the new PE programme with more confidence, knowledge and understanding.

It is good to see our children benefiting from these changes and enjoying the greater independence in their learning that it offers them.

We have a range of after school sports clubs running each term which are well attended by boys and girls.

PE & Sports Premium Funding has enabled us to subscribe to the Slough School Sports Network as Gold members and our increased participation in inter-school competitions is evidence of our endeavours to provide not only the opportunity to compete against other schools but to offer the potential to reach higher level competition.

Some of our teachers have been able to take up coaching courses offered by the Network to improve their knowledge and skills.

Having received a Bronze in the Sainsbury Games Awards at the end of last year, we are currently working towards the Gold Standard by the end of 2016.

Where we are nowA sustained commitment is established to improve the quality of existing PE teaching through continuing professional development in PE for generalists, so that all primary pupils improve their health, skills and physical literacy, and have exposure to a broader range of activities.

A needs-led staff development plan is established including provision of relevant externally provided training, supporting resources and teaching aids.

An evidenced increase in staff confidence and positive perception has led to an increase in quality of learning and teaching, with individual staff taking greater responsibility for their own future development.

To maximise learning and impact, real PE was supported by a 3-day programme of training and support. The subject leader was introduced to a new approach to teaching PE which was followed by a whole school inset for all staff. The model also allowed the subject leader to use the real PE approach with their pupils and to support other staff before a review at the next training day. This ensured a full understanding and the sharing of best practice. (Through the creation of a community of learning.)

Where we are nowAll pupils are included within lessons with activity levels high. Teaching is well judged and often imaginative producing high levels of engagement from all pupils.

Pupils are working at different and appropriate levels, with interventions personalised to challenge and support all groups.

Effective and timely review of learning by teachers and pupils is an integral part of all lessons.

Consistent praise of positive behaviours means pupils have highly positive experiences in the subject and consequently want and expect to do well.

pupil progress:

Where we are nowClear learning journeys are established so that pupil progress can be recognised.

Less able pupils are supported effectively and the more able appropriately challenged so all groups make clear and evidenced progress.

All pupils are making secure and sustained progress aligned to the assessment framework.

A culture of high expectation with an established growth mindset amongst pupils is evident.

profile and broader impact of PE:

What we have achievedA clear plan and report has been agreed and shared showing the spending of the PE & Sport Premium money and the impact of the spending.

Using real PE across the school has had a very positive impact on both the teachers’ confidence in teaching PE and the children’s enjoyment of it.Mrs Beynon, Headteacher

real PE has impacted across the whole school in lots of ways. Firstly it has empowered the pupils to take more responsibility of their learning. Using the Multi Ability learning journeys children can easily identify areas of improvement and set themselves targets to challenge their learning - this happens not just in PE but across the school in other school subjects. Pupils recognise that when something becomes difficult its now more of a challenge in which to complete as opposed to an obstacle in the way of them being successful.

There is a growing uptake of Extra Curricular clubs which has improved our lunch time routines and is contributing to a growing culture of activities on the playground which is led by our new ‘Junior Leadership Programme’.

Teachers are now more confident in their delivery of PE and are now using a variety of real PE methods in other ways such as using activities as morning energizers and review methods used as a way to praise and encourage positive learning behaviours.

Positive displays in the school highlight and celebrate positive PE experiences.

Pupils have at least 2 hours of core PE lessons each week in all Key Stages with the role of PE and Sport seen as central to creating healthy and active learners.

A broader impact on whole school improvement has recognised by parents, governors, senior leaders and across all staff. PE is highly valued throughout the school community.

next steps...We are excited about whats happening on the next stage of our real PE journey. We will continue to commit to developing teaching staff by ensuring all new teachers are trained in real PE at the earliest opportunity.

As well as real PE we will be looking to further embed our pupil leadership programme giving pupils an early experience of leading and supporting their peers in the classroom and the playground.

Some staff have already attended real gym and all staff will have the opportunity to be trained and supported as this is rolled out within the curriculum.

Family FUNS will be at the forefront of our development with our first cohort of families already recruited and taking part we will look to turn Family FUNS into a culture in school and in the community.

Supporting all these steps we are committed to give all staff access to weekly Team Teach sessions with a Lead Practitioner that will continue to enhance the teachers confidence in delivering Create Development programmes giving both staff and pupils the very best PE experiences.
