Type of Pregnancy Prevention

• Emergency contraception is used after intercourse, in the case of some other failed form of contraception (ie, a condom broke) or when no contraception was used.

• The pill is taken soon after intercourse and contains a higher dose of hormones than those found in typical birth control pills. The higher level of hormones prevent the fertilized egg for attaching to the uterus wall and is expelled.

• This method alone does not prevent the spread of STI’s

• The prevention of STI’s is based on the separation of fluids of the people engaged in the activity. The Morning After Pill is used after intercourse so it provides no protection.

• For patients without health insurance, the price has been reported to be between $10 and $70.

Effectiveness

• Depending of the hormone in the particular pill that is being used, the Morning After Pill can be anywhere from 50 – 90% effective, if taken soon after intercourse.
