LOCATIONTo comply with OSHA regulations, emergency eye wash and shower equipment must be installed in close proximity to anylocation where hazardous materials are handled. As a rule of thumb, the ANSI standard suggests that the distance from thehazardous materials to the emergency equipment not exceed 100 feet or 10 seconds walking time. However, emergencyequipment should be located closer to the hazard if particularly injurious chemicals are being handled. In such cases, equipmentshould be located within 10 to 20 feet of employees. The location which is selected for emergency equipment should be freefrom obstructions and should be accessible from three sides. Users of the equipment should not have to walk around machineryor other obstacles to reach the unit.

WATER SUPPLYProper operation of emergency equipment requires the availability of a large and continuous supply of potable water. The watersupply must, at a minimum, be capable of delivering the volumes of water required by the ANSI standard. Piping should be atleast as large as the inlet size of of the unit to be installed. The water supply line must also be capable of delivering anuninterruptible flow of water of at least 30 PSI flow pressure.

FLOW DATAThe effectiveness of any piece of emergency equipment in rinsing away contaminant depends solely upon two factors: thevolume of water produced, and the pattern in which it is delivered. Sellstrom units are engineered to provide superiorperformance in these two critical areas.

CORROSION PROTECTIONEmergency equipment is often installed in areas where it is exposed to corrosive materials. In these instances, it is advisable touse equipment which is corrosion resistant. Sellstrom offers a protective epoxy coating as an optional feature. Sellstrom alsooffers units which are constructed entirely of stainless steel or PVC. Selection of the appropriate corrosion resistant unitdepends upon the materials to which the equipment may be exposed. Please call for additional information.

Eye Wash/Drench Hose

ANSI COMPLIANCE CHECKLISTANSI Standard Z358.1 provides that drench hoseunits may supplement, but may not be used inplace of, dedicated eye wash units. We offer aseries of units which meet the requirements forboth an eye wash and a drench hose. These dualpurpose units can be used to combine an eyewash and a drench hose into a single versatile,economic unit.

This checklist summarizes the requirements forboth eye washes and drench hoses. Sectionreferences are to ANSI Z358.1-1998 (Section 5,“Eye Washes” and Section 8, “Drench Hoses”).Where the requirements of these sectionsoverlap, the more stringent of the two is stated.Use this checklist to verify the proper installation,performance and maintenance of dual purposeeye wash/drench hose units.

Important NoteFaucet mounted eye washes, whether manufactured by Sellstrom or others, require two motions to activateunit (turn on faucet, pull knob). Therefore, while they meet some requirements of ANSI Z358.1-1990, Sellstromdoes not believe that they are adequate or acceptable substitutes for dedicated, plumbed-in eye washequipment. Sellstrom offers them solely as supplemental units for secondary protection.

Users of faucet mounted eye washes should be instructed to use cold water only with this type of eye wash.Use of hot water may cause scalding.

Faucet mounted eye washes convert any standard faucet into an emergency eye wash station withoutinterfering with normal faucet operation. They can be installed at sinks close to where accidents may occur.Unlike self-contained or personal eye washes, they afford the user an unlimited water supply for completerinsing and cleansing.

To operate the faucet mounted eye wash, simply turn on water and pull knob. Two gentle streams of water aredelivered through the outlet heads. Push knob or turn off faucet to return faucet to normal operation.
