Emergency First Aid

PPT-SM-EFA 2016

First aid is medical attention usually given immediately after an injury happens while the victim is still at the location where they were injured

2

PPT-SM-EFA 2016

According to OSHA, millions of workplace injuries occur each year. With numbers that high, at some point you will most likely see or be involved in a situation that requires first aid.

3

PPT-SM-EFA 2016 4

There must be at least one worker trained in first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation

(CPR) on every shift if there no clinic or hospital nearby

PPT-SM-EFA 2016

Companies also must provide first aid equipment and an ANSI-approved first aid kit

The first aid kit should have items that can treat the type of accidents that could happen at your workplace

5

PPT-SM-EFA 2016

Some workplaces may also have an automated external defibrillator (AED)

Only workers who are trained on how to use an AED should use one

6

PPT-SM-EFA 2016

If you work with corrosive materials, your company must also have eyewash stations and emergency showers for quick drenching or flushing in case a worker is exposed

7

PPT-SM-EFA 2016

You need to know where all of these first aid items are and be familiar with your company’s site-specific first aid procedures

8

PPT-SM-EFA 2016 9

If you are trained and must give first aid, remember to practice universal precautions: treat any bodily fluids as if infected

Wear disposable gloves while giving first aid to protect yourself from infection

PPT-SM-EFA 2016 10

If a worker needs first aid, the first thing you need to do is check your surroundings

Look for anything that could put you and the injured worker in danger Check for fires, toxic smoke or gases,

an unstable foundation, and electrical wires

PPT-SM-EFA 2016

Once you have assessed the situation, call 911

When help is on the way, care for the injured worker if you are trained

to do so

11

PPT-SM-EFA 2016

If the person is responsive, ask about what happenedIf the worker is unconscious and facedown, roll the

person face up while supporting their head,

neck, and back

12

Check for responsiveness by tapping the worker on the shoulder and shouting, “Are you okay?”

PPT-SM-EFA 2016

Check the worker head to toe for injuries

Check the worker’s circulationScan the worker’s body for severe bleedingCheck for a medical alert tag If the injured worker is wearing one, give this information to the 911 dispatcher and emergency medical services (EMS) workers when they arrive

13

PPT-SM-EFA 2016 14

Monitor the worker for any changes and give first aid care only if you are trained to do so

Your involvement only lasts until EMS arrives

PPT-SM-EFA 2016 15

Report the accident and any exposures to your supervisor as soon as possible

Remember, during any first aid incident, remain calm, and call for help

immediately
