EMERGENCY GUIDE
To report any emergency or suspicious activity

1. Call CAMPUS POLICE immediately at Ext. 4444 or 508.854.4444.
2. If phones are down, Dial 911 from your mobile device and give the dispatcher your name and location.
3. Stay calm.
4. Tell the dispatcher:
a. The nature of the emergency.
b. If Police, Fire, or an Ambulance is needed.
c. If there is a weapon involved.
d. If the suspect is still present. If not, identify the direction the suspect went.
REPORTING EMERGENCIES
If you discover an emergency situation on the Quinsigamond College Campus, immediately perform
the following steps:

ACTIVE SHOOTER: RUN
RUN, HIDE, FIGHT
If you are involved in a situation where someone has entered the area and started shooting, the following are a
list of recommended actions:
1. Exit the building immediately.
2. Notify anyone you may encounter to exit the building immediately.
3. Notify the Police by calling 911.
4. Give the 911 Operator the following information:
• Your name • Location of the incident (be as specific as
possible) • Number of shooters (if known) • Identification of shooter (if known) • Number of persons who may be involved • Your location

instructions on other types of Emergency Situations.

If you are directly involved and exiting the building is not possible, the following actions are recommended:
1. Go to the nearest room or office. 2. Close the door, lock if possible. Barricade
the door/s with desks, bookcases, file cabinets etc.
3. Cover the door windows and move to a corner of the room.
4. Keep quiet and act as if no one is in the room.
5. DO NOT answer the door. 6. Notify the Police Department at 911. 7. Give the 911 Operator the following
information: • Your name • Your location (be as specific as possible) • Number of shooters (if known) • Identification of shooter (if known) • Number of persons who may be involved
8. Wait for the Police to assist you out of the building.
If a person is in a wheelchair try to put a large object in front of them in the back of the room. (i.e. file cabinet,
desk, book case).
ACTIVE SHOOTER: HIDE

ACTIVE SHOOTER: FIGHT
If you are directly involved and encounter the shooter, as a last resort, and only if your life is in danger.
• Attempt to incapacitate the shooter • Act with physical aggression • Improvise weapon (hard, and heavy
objects you can swing) • Commit to your actions
When law enforcement arrives:
• Remain calm and follow instructions • Keep your hands visible at all times • Avoid pointing or yelling • Know that help for the injured is on
the way

ASSEMBLY AREAS
Healthcare and Workforce Development Center: Basement Level
Hallway and Classrooms
For emergency situations when time is a factor and reaching an assembly area is impractical, follow identified safety measures
specific to your present situation.
Take notice of the following locations inside unless otherwise directed by a Campus Police Officer or College Official:
Healthcare and Workforce Development Center: Exit building at the
nearest and safest location and report to either 27 Federal Street (Parking Lot) or the
Worcester Common.
Note:• In case of fire, always evacuate a minimum of 500 feet
from the building.
• Do not block roadway for emergency vehicle access.
The following outside areas have been identified for situations when staying inside your building may subject you to serious injury or harm.
Take notice of the following locations outside unless otherwise directed by a Campus Police Officer or College Official:

BOMB THREAT
If you receive a bomb threat call:
• Keep caller on line as long as possible
• DO NOT USE CELL PHONES
• DO NOT PULL FIRE ALARM
• Have someone nearby contact Campus Police via a landline at Ext. 4444 or 508-854.4444 or via an Emergency Call Box
Note: • Time of call
• Age and gender of caller
• Speech pattern (accents)
• Emotional state of caller
• Background noise
If you observe a suspicious object or explosive device on campus, do not handle. Clear the area and immediately
notify Campus Police at Ext. 4444 or 508.854.4444.
Ask: •When is the bomb going to explode?
•Where is the bomb?
•What kind of bomb is it?
•Why did you place the bomb?
If you check your area and observe a potential bomb:
• Do not touch the object
• Do not open drawers or cabinets
• Do not turn on/off any electrical devices or switches (light switches, cell phones, radios, etc.)
• Always be aware of secondary devices

• Where unidentified vapors are involved, always assume they are toxic or hazardous.
• When reporting an accident, be specific about the nature of the material involved and its exact location.
• The person in control of the classroom/area should vacate the affected area at once and alert others as you EXIT.
• Seal off the area to prevent further contamination.
• If exposed, wait for direction and try not to expose others.
• Remain in the vicinity for proper treatment if safe to do so.
• Use Gel Blankets or Eye Wash Stations if applicable.
Damage to individuals and/or the environment can be caused by any unplanned release of hazardous materials. Potentially
hazardous materials can include a wide variety of chemicals as well as human waste and other contaminants.
CHEMICAL EXPOSURE/ACCIDENT

IN THE EVENT OF AN EARTHQUAKE: • Stay away from windows or bookcases.
• Identify safe places such as:
• In a doorway
• Under sturdy furniture
• Against an inside wall
IN THE EVENT OF A TORNADO: • Take immediate action when a warning is issued.
• Go to basement areas away from windows.
• Locate a small interior room or hall on the lowest floor of the building.
• Use heavy furniture for shelter if needed.
• Familiarize yourself with assembly area locations listed in this guide prior to any emergency.
• Groups of people should huddle together.
Fear at the time of a disaster may create panic which can account for more injuries than the disaster itself. It is critical to
keep personnel and students calm and prevent panic.

EVACUATION PROCEDURES
27 Federal Street Parking Lot
1. Exit out of lot via exit ramp
2. Take right (south) onto Federal Street toward Portland or turn left (North) and go toward Main Street
3. Also if rear gate is open proceed out that gate and turn right (North) onto Myrtle Street
When possible, uniformed officers will be present to direct traffic off campus as quickly as possible.
If emergency circumstances prevent campus evacuation via a pre-arranged route, emergency personnel will re-direct
vehicles toward an alternate exit.

FIRE
• Activate the closest FIRE PULL STATION.
• Walk quickly to the nearest EXIT.
• Alert others as you EXIT.
• Stay back at least 500 feet from the building.
• When possible, contact Campus Police at Ext. 4444 or Dial 911.
IF TRAPPED DURING A FIRE: • Find a window and place an article of clothing outside of it and use it as a marker for rescue crews.
• If the room has no window, or if window that does not open, stay near the floor and in a corner if possible, where the air is less toxic.
• Shout at regular intervals to alert emergency personnel of your location.
• Disabled individuals should go to the nearest stairwell landing.
Smoke is the greatest danger in a fire – as you evacuate or if you are trapped, always stay near the floor where the air is less
toxic. STAY LOW!
Familiarize yourself in advance with fire extinguisher locations, exits, alarm pull stations and evacuation maps and guides.

MEDICAL EMERGENCY
• Call Campus Police immediately at Ext. 4444 or 508.854.4444.
• To control bleeding: Apply direct pressure using a clean thick pad, towel or cloth to injury.
• If possible, keep injured person lying down with injured body parts elevated. Cover with a blanket or coat to maintain body temperature.
• For neck, spinal or back injury: DO NOT MOVE the injured person unless the environment they are in can cause further harm.
• For seizure activity: Clear the area around the patient to protect them from further injury. Do not place anything in the mouth and do not restrain the individual.
• To locate a pulse: Feel neck using middle and index fingers under the angle of lower jaw for pulse in neck (carotid) artery.
• If someone is unresponsive, not breathing, or has no pulse and you know CPR, begin immediately. Ask a bystander to call 911 and/or Campus Police at Ext. 4444 or 508.854.4444
In many cases of medical emergencies, appropriate action taken during the first moments can prevent further injury. Fast action is
most important and may save a life.
The Quinsigamond Community College Campus Police Officers are all certified in CPR and First Aid. The Campus Police Department is
equipped with multiple AEDs (Automated External Defibrillator.)

SERIOUS CRIME OR VIOLENCE
• If you observe a criminal act or suspicious person, notify Campus Police immediately at Ext. 4444 or 508.854.4444.
• Stay calm.
• If you can’t exit the area, take cover immediately.
• If a gun is involved, call 911 or Campus Police.
• Remember details: Is the suspicious person male or female; be able to describe their clothing and physical characteristics.
• Identify if there is more than one suspect.
• Assist the officers when they arrive by supplying them with all pertinent information.
• Avoid personal risk.
As there are never two emergency situations alike, these procedures are only guidelines. As with all emergencies,
safeguarding lives is most important. Use common sense and stay calm.
