Emergency Medical Technician - FALL 2018

Northwest Iowa Community College’s face-to-face EMT classes always start the thirdMonday in September. Monday, September 17 is the set date to begin the course in theFall of 2018. We will offer one class on campus and at least one class in an off-campuslocation. The location of the off-campus course has not been decided as of the brochuredeadline. Look for more information on these classes in the next continuing educationbrochure.NCC also offers the Hybrid EMT Course (on-line). The winter/spring course will start onMonday, January 15, 2018 at NCC from 6:00-9:00 pm. The Fall 2018 course is sched-uled to start on Monday, August 13. The Hybrid EMT Course consists of on-line classlectures with 5 all-day Saturday skills sessions to be held on the NCC campus. The blendof on-line with the face-to-face skills labs shortens the duration of the course. The studentmust be dedicated and motivated to handle this form of educational delivery.

FREEEmergency Medical Technician—Hybrid Course - On-Line

Northwest Iowa Community College and Iowa Western Community College in CouncilBluffs have teamed up to offer the EMT course in an on-line version. You will berequired to attend 5 all-day Saturday sessions in order to complete the required skillspractice and competencies. Course #56751 orientation class will be held on January15, 2018 starting at 6:00 pm. This course is scheduled to conclude in May 2018,followed by National Registry Practical and computer-based testing. This coursewill cover the 2011 Scope of Practice changes. Modules presented include: Preparationof the EMT; Airway Management; Patient Assessment; Medical/Behavioral Emergencies;OB/GYN; Trauma; Infants and Children; Ambulance Operations, and additional skills.Clinical time at an emergency room is required in addition to the classroom hours.College credit is available. Minimum class size of 6 is required.

Need-based tuition assistance is available.

Prerequisites: Must be 17 years old at the start of class, be proficient in reading, writing,and speaking English, and physically capable of performing basic EMT skills. Hazmat Operations Refresher Course This course will review Hazmat response from the perspective of the responding firefighter,EMS, or law enforcement personnel. Topics include hazardous substances, protective equipment and decontamination, containment and protective measures, and predicting thebehavior of hazardous materials. Uniform/scrubs, white shoes, and a watch with a second hand are required for the clinicalportion of the course. State competency testing is scheduled several times each month. CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKSAs of July 1, 2010, criminal background checks will be required on each student enrolling inthe certified nurse aide course. The criminal background checks will be completed prior tothe first night of class. Criminal convictions or documented history of abuse may prevent stu-dents from participating in the clinical education experience. Students unable to participatein clinical education will be unable to complete the course requirements. The Department ofInspections and Appeals (DIA) regulations can be found on their website.

NURSE AIDE COMPETENCY EXAMTo fulfull the training requirements of OBRA for nurse aides working in Long Term Carefacilities and skilled nursing facilities, completion of a minimum 75-hour course and a written and skills competency exam is required. The skills competency exam will be offered on the following dates:

RefundsYou may cancel your registration by calling the Continuing Education Office at least one business daybefore the start of class to receive a 100% refund.

CancellationsThe Continuing Education Department makes every effort to maintain the schedule announced inour tabloid. If a class does not have sufficient enrollment, we reserve the right to cancel, combine, or change the class schedule. If the class you registered for is cancelled, you will be contacted and 100% of the tuition will be refunded.

Postponement of ClassesIn the event of inclement weather, classes may be postponed. Listen to local radio stations or checkour website for college announcements.

CertificatesCertificates of attendance are awarded at the end of each program. These must be retained bylicensed professionals for four years. Duplicate certificates are provided for a fee. No credit will begiven for partial attendance.
