77 2019 SCALE Users' Group Workshop

Outline

• Support, Optimize, Innovate– Product-oriented Management– Software mergers

• Software Quality Assurance– Review of Recent Events– Importance of Validation

• FY19 Highlights

88 2019 SCALE Users' Group Workshop

Support, Optimize, Innovate• Support sponsors and stakeholders

– New roles for sponsor representatives and product owners

– Commitment to more frequent beta releases to gather feedback

• Optimize processes and efforts– New automated scheme for generating release notes– Technology Stack– Mergers

• High-performance computing team repository, developers of Shift

• Anticipated with NEAMS Workbench, successor of Fulcrum

• Innovate with methods and data

99 2019 SCALE Users' Group Workshop

Technology Stack• CMake

(configure)

• Git(version control)

• Python(scripts)

• C++ (codebase)

• SWIG(Fortran/C/pybindings)

• HDF5(binary data)

• JSON(text data)

• QT(GUI)

• GitLab(manage development)

• Slack(communication)

SCALE suite contains 11 end-user products

1. MAVRIC - radiation shielding

2. CSAS - criticality safety

3. TRITON -general reactor fuel depletion

4. ORIGEN - general depletion/decay/activation

5. ORIGAMI - LWR spent fuel isotopics generation

6. Polaris - LWR reactor fuel depletion

7. TSUNAMI - sensitivity and similarity analysis

8. Sampler - general uncertainty propagation

9. AMPX - nuclear data processing (transforms ENDF/B to SCALE format)

10. SCALE nuclear data libraries -curated, verified, and validated

11. ORIGEN reactor libraries - data to generate system-specific spent fuel isotopics

Current User Base

• 9191 unique users

• 61 nations

1313 2019 SCALE Users' Group Workshop

Software Quality Assurance• Underwent internal SQA Audit

– following "non-naturally occurring element defect"– positive result– focus area is clear connection between code requirements and tests

• Verification & Validation– make V&V a more central, easily traceable aspect of distribution

• ship criticality validation suite "VALID" with SCALE• incorporate more test suites, e.g. MADRE verification suite for advanced reactors

– easier to run test suites for users– clearer validation processes and accompanying documents

FY19 Highlights

• Initial versions of TRITON-Shift, MAVRIC-Shift, and CSAS-Shift

• Nodal core simulator data generation capability in TRITON-Shift

• Additional ENDF resource reading in ORIGEN

• Additions to Polaris for NRC BWR power uprates (MELLLA+)

• New ENDF/B-VIII CE and MG data libraries

• New fast reactor and ultra fine MG data libraries

• Continued geometry engine robustness and performance improvements (3D views in Fulcrum)

Summary and Future• FY19 was a great year focusing on support and optimization,

paving the way for the future innovation

• Huge thanks to sponsors NCSP and NRC in FY19• New and interesting work in FY20

– NRC • Generation of "source data" to feed severe accident analysis of advanced

reactors (MELCOR)• Generation of "nodal data" to feed steady-state/transient confirmatory analysis

with TRACE/PARCS– NCSP

• Improvements to CSAS-Shift• Improvements to verification, validation, and documentation• Finalization of nuclear data libraries (ENDF/B-VII.1 and ENDF/B-VIII.0)
