April 21, 2017 Hello Emerson Families~
With Spring hopefully here to stay and the temperature will eventually be on the rise, I would
like to put a friendly reminder out about appropriate clothing for school. Students are able to wear
shorts that are at an appropriate length. Shorts should be below the finger tips when arms are at the
side of the child. Shoulders, backs and stomachs should be fully covered (i.e. no spaghetti straps or
tank tops) also low cut shirts should not be worn unless there is something underneath. Flip-flops are
not an appropriate shoe for school due to the lack of support and protection to the feet. Thank you for
your cooperation in making the learning environment as free from distraction as possible.
M-STEP testing is in full swing! The 5th grade will finish the M-STEP (the new format of MEAP
testing) on Thursday, 4/27 with a Social Studies test. The 4th Grade students will begin their M-STEP
testing on Tuesday, 5/2 in the area of English-Language Arts. They will complete the Math portions on
Thursday, 5/4 and Tuesday, 5/9. 4th grade students will also complete a Science M-STEP on Thurs-
day, 5/11. The 3rd
grade students will begin testing the week of May 15th. More details to come on
that next week. Please make every effort to have your child in school on the testing days that are men-
tioned as a way to avoid a lengthy make-up session that will be held when they return.
Here’s a harsh reality…your kids were born into a connected world. On average, it takes less
than 50 days before a newborn has their picture online (never trust an OB with a selfie stick). As they
grow, the Internet integrates seamlessly into their lives. Kids watch streaming videos, play online
games, interact with cloud-based smart toys. Check out the link below for ways to keep your child’s
digital life in check!

Friday, May 12th is Family Field Day from 5:30-6:30 right here at Emerson Elementary. The
Spring Buy 1 Get 1 Free Book Fair will be open from 5:00-7:00 and food will be available for purchase
beginning at 5:15. Pizza, cotton candy and water are the food offerings. The games will begin at 5:30
and continue until 6:30. The raffles will take place around 6:15. This event is FREE and for current
Emerson families only. Please note that while all of the activities are at no cost, the pizza, cotton can-
dy and water will be available for a small charge. There will be gift baskets and a bike that will be raf-
fled off in the later part of the evening. The raffle tickets will be available for purchase from Emerson
Staff members during the evening. I look forward to seeing you on Friday, May 12th!
Just a reminder to our 1st grade families that the 1
st grade students will be traveling to the
Harris Nature Center on Tuesday, May 16th. The 4
th grade students will be traveling to the Wharton
Center to perform with the Lansing Symphony Orchestra on Wednesday, May 24th. The 5
th grade
students from all elementary schools will have their annual Field Meet on Wednesday, May 24th at the
OHS track. Parent volunteers are needed for the Field Meet. Please contact Mr. Lemanski if you are
available to help out. Kindergarten and Dev. Kindergarten students are traveling too! They are head-
ing to Potter Park Zoo on Thursday, May 25th! There are lots of extended learning opportunities
coming up as we finish out a fantastic school year!
I hope that you all have a fantastic weekend! Enjoy the sunshine!
As always…Go Tigers and GO TROJANS!!!
