The Emerson Typewriter facto-ry, originally built in the early1900’s, has served theWoodstock community in avariety of functions for nearly100 years. Now, this exception-al and unique building is beingtransformed into 52 stunningresidential lofts.Dave Plote and Kurt Kresmerypurchased the property fromthe Woodstock Wire Works inSeptember 2004. The early-twentieth century building is an
excellent example of the type ofcommercial architecture thatwas being designed and built atthat time. Attractively detailedbrickwork, and large panedwindows are two of the hall-marks of this style. Plote andKresmery fell in love with thebuilding and shared a vision forcreating a truly different type ofliving in Woodstock. "You canhave city-like living right herein historic downtownWoodstock", says Kresmery.
The two took advantage of thebuilding's natural features, andcreated floorplans that madethe most of the size and propor-tions of the vast space. Thebuilding's existing featureswere utilized to their full extent- vintage brick and masonry areleft exposed. Skylights, whichflooded the original factoryspace with light, now do thesame with the loft homes.Ceilings have been strippeddown to expose their huge tim-
ber beams and wood structure."The details were great, andadded a lot to the personality ofthe lofts", Kresmery states. With that said, no two homeswill be the same. The luxuriousone, two and three bedroomlofts range is size from 961 –2279 square feet.
"The location of the building isgreat because of its proximity tothe train and to the square.Residents of Emerson Lofts haveeverything they need right here."

Historic downtown Woodstockhas many claims to fame, butbeing featured in the movieGroundhog Day is one of it’smost popular. The Square fea-tures a small plaque that marksthe spot where the movie'sweatherman, played by BillMurray repeatedly stomps intoa puddle. The bell tower thatthe weatherman leaps from isactually the Woodstock OperaHouse, which regularly pres-ents concerts and plays. Everywinter the town celebratesGroundhog Days with activi-ties that include free screeningsof the movie and walking toursof filming sites. Other times ofthe year you can take a self-guided tour with a map pro-vided by the WoodstockChamber of Commerce. Livinghere connects you with historyin a way few other places do.
