Summer Water SafetyAfter a long and blistering New England winter, the time has finally come to walk in the sun, ride the waves, and take a dip in the pool. For all of us at the Emilson Y it means opening up the Outdoor Center, a place for families to cool off in our three pools, play, grill, and breathe in the outdoors together.

As beaches and pools open, boating activities launch, and people host backyard barbeques with pools, water safety must be a priority. To have a safe experience in and around water, we recommend the following precautions:

Supervision - Designate a responsible adult to actively watch when children are in and around water.

Communication – When there are multiple adults present select one person to be in charge, don’t assume.

Buddy System – Adults and children should swim with a buddy and in an area with lifeguards present.Never swim alone.

Learn CPR – In the time it might take for paramedics to arrive your CPR skills could make a difference in saving someone’s life.

Worst Case Scenario – If your home has a pool, even a small wading pool, and your child goes missing, check the pool first. Seconds can make a difference.

Learn to Swim – Enroll non-swimmers in formal swim lessons, children and adults.

All of us in Aquatics look forward to welcoming you to all that the Emilson Y has to offer during the summer months and we are hoping for a season filled with sunny days and fun.

fOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY:

vi Support for our Community

New Aquatics Policy:

TEST * MARK * PROTECTAt the South Shore YMCA we are committed to keep-

ing all patrons as safe as possible while swimming. As

such we will be implementing a new protocol in our

Aquatics Department called Test * Mark * Protect. All

children under 14 will be given a swim Test. Based on

the swim test, or their age, individuals will be given a

colored bracelet to Mark what areas of the pool they

may use. Using this system will help us Protect the

children who use our pool.

Swim test results will be stored in our system and members will receive a colored

membership tag, to bring with them to the pool to receive their bracelet. This

will allow a convenient way to know each child’s color and swim ability each

time they arrive at our pool or the Y. Swim tests will not need to happen every

time you come to swim unless the individual or child wants to try for a higher

level or the swim ability has changed drastically.

swimming. It is also a fantastic way for swimmers to showcase the skills they have already learned.

All parents are required to assist at swim meets and will be scheduled accordingly.

Participants will need a team suit and appropriate set of fins

(a sizing kit and online ordering instructions will be available at the Emilson and Quincy branches on Monday, June 3).

PTUSA works with hundreds of young players throughout the year and offers a

fun, high energy introduction to soccer. Our coaches’ #1 goal is to make sure

players build self-esteem while falling in love with the game. Small group

activities will help players develop a sense of balance, coordination and multi-

directional movement. Each player will be encouraged to succeed in a series of

high energy activities and stories, designed to stimulate both mentally and

physically. Sessions will be 90 minutes in duration and run in conjunction with

all of our sites excluding our Premier Camp Weeks.

Germantown Neighborhood CenterSince 1982, the Germantown Neighborhood Center (GNC) has been providing critical support services, needed resources, programs

and workshops to the youth and families of the Germantown and neighboring communities of Quincy. Located within one of

Quincy’s largest public housing developments, the GNC serves a community of mostly low-income, single-parent households and

works with support and guidance from the South Shore YMCA to identify and develop strategies to address community needs.

Our youth programs give kids a safe environment where they can grow and learn positive values that they will carry with them for a

lifetime. Our after school youth programs run from September to June and include: Sports Blast, Fun Size Fitness, Reading Round Up,

Dancing Divas and Girl Scouts to name a few. School vacation camps run during February, April and during the summer months for

grades K–12. Women’s programs are designed to get women out of the house and build relationships with other women who are in

the same situation. Childcare and dinner are often provided. Women are encouraged to bring the whole family while mom engages

in skill-building workshops with other women. Our Family Lifelong Learning programs encourage literacy and educational achievement

through our GED programs, or Teen Success programs. Our food pantry serves residents all over the City of Quincy with food assistance.

We are constantly trying to raise more money, add more programs, and do all that we can to help. Our programs and services work

toward giving community members the skills, confidence, and resources to take action and improve their lives.

“For my husband the Y has been a life-changing experience. Unemployment can be hard

on a family, especially if you are actively looking for work. The Y has been a stress reliever

for my husband and our entire family.”

You may know of people in our community whose experiences are similar. Having an impact like this is one reason

that the South Shore YMCA is investing in a new facility in Quincy. The new Y will provide an expanded Early Learning

Center where working families can have peace of mind that their children are safe and thriving, a health & well-being

center for all ages, teen programming, and vibrant spaces where families can participate together in healthy activities.

The Y’s collaborations with other health care providers will make this facility a focal point for community well-being.

Construction has begun, and we expect to complete the new facility by October of 2013. Follow the progress on our

website and learn how you can help the Y lead the way in youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

Our Capital Campaign Community Phase is underway and provides opportunities for naming places within the building

and outside on the grounds. If you wish to make a donation, contact Bruce Haas at 617-479-8500, ext. 249 or

Possibility, Promise – connecting people, providing endless possibilities,

and a promise to continue to build healthy, confident, caring people and

communities. Pledge today! www.ssymca.org/donations.

MY Y STORYPersonal Training

When I came to the Y my workouts consisted of

the selectorized circuit machines and some cardio. At that time I was only

able to do 1 push up. That is when a personal trainer approached me

about bringing my current workout to the next level. Within three months

of working with my trainer I was able to complete multiple boot camps

each week. With my trainer’s knowledge, motivation and direct attention on me, I now have completed a Tough MudderObstacle Challenge, Reach the Beach 200 mile relay, RuggedManiac, Ruckus and am running a 10 mile trail race this weekend!

PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM

Strengthening individuals of all abilitiesThe South Shore YMCA Partnership Program is designed specifically for

people who need assistance and are interested in a structured exercise program.

SUMMER 2013 runs10 weeksThursdays are 9 weeksfees will be pro-rated at time of registration

The Partnership Program has added a MotoMed Viva 2

Trainer for movement therapy. Physical movement is the

precondition for your overall health and well-being. It does

not matter if you do passive, motor-assisted, or active

resistive training by using your own muscles. The MotoMed

movement trainer is especially suitable for people with

limited mobility like those who have suffered a traumatic

brain injury, or those with conditions such as MS,

Cerebral Palsy, Parkinson’s or Wheel Chair Dependency.

For more information about our MotoMed trainer or to set up an

appointment please contact MaryEllen Olson at ext. 322 or
