In addition, she participated in the schematic design and concept development of several small and large-scale projects. A bright, highly-capable and valued member of our team, Emilys contributions not only aided the effectiveness and productivity of our firms initiatives, but directly contributed to the success of each project she participated in. Throughout her time with our firm, Emily proved herself a dependable and consistent employee. She was able to handle multiple tasks and ensured that each was executed promptly and efficiently. We were continually impressed with Emilys software utilization and design proficiency; as well as her ability to produce a quality of work exceeding that of most interns.   • GRAFTING HOUSEROME, ITALY(FALL 2014)

    Tucked in a corner of the Aurelian Wall near piazza del popolo, this layered house suits the needs of an artist; a botanical illustrator. The peaceful location and the Italian climate zone allows the artist to not only research plant species from the nearby Villa Borghese gardens, but also to grow their own specimens.

  • The idea of grafting in this case is the process of restoring a ruined part of the Aurelian wall. These particular sections of the wall are covered almost completely in vegetation as nature slowly eats away at this archeological site. This house clears away the plants and aims to restore the wall to its original glory. Interstingly, this segment of the wall is solid on the interior, and so most of the interior spaces are built by carving out earth from behind the walls. Most parts of the wall remain intact throughout the house and acts as the buffer space between the gardens and the living quarters.

  • The extreme level difference throughout the house allows for creative ways of assigning the various programmes. There are 5 major scissoring levels throughout the house, from the top garden level, the threshold level, studio level, living level, to the bottom-most low-light garden level. At the top entrance level, one can look out to see a breathtaking view of the Piazza del Popolo and when one gets down to the lowest level, there is a small trail that leads to the public road.

    The purpose of this garden is to appreciate the beauties of light and water. We encounter these two things too often in our everyday lives that we dont stop and think of what we see or consume. This garden, situated on a detached island from downtown Toronto, creates the perfect opportunity for the public to leave the city life and experience light and water.

  • The design of this garden implements the ideals of a Fascinist architecture by focusing on the atmosphere of the site. It is influenced by the patterns created in a bubble chamber when two particles collide together. In direct contrast to the 17th century French formal gardens like the garden of Versailles which impose order over nature, this garden is to represent the chaos of todays society as a result of the collapse in time and space; anything can exist anywhere.

    The garden has many paths, either by foot, bicycle or canoe, that pedestrians can take to experience the garden. It is surrounded by 4 large programmes: the piazza market, the beach, an outdoor amphitheatre, and a firefly conservatory. It accommodates all day, all season-long, creating unique experiences each time. The entire site becomes a recreational centre for shows, exhibitions, and more.

    This complex consists of a theatre, a gallery, an office building with retail units on the first floor. Covered with trees, the site is stratigically shadowed by two bridges to create places of repose, with additional green area on the roof of the theatre. There is also a cafe to initiate people to stroll up to the upper levels of the park.

    During this 8-month co-op term, I was mostly involved in extremely fast-paced retail projects. For some, Ive developed drawings from the beginning of the project to see the final construction within a 6-month period. Most other retail designs were completed with colleagues and I participated in schematic design, design development, construction documents, construction administration, as well as project-end follow-up. It was truly an unique and extensive learning experience.
