Emma McClure’s paintings are works of character, beauty and hidden depths. There is incredible emotion that runs deep through this work that will draw the viewer back again and again.

Whether on canvas, on board or on paper we are taken somewhere very special indeed. Behind each subtle work is a calm and deeply moving passion that has empowered the artist to create her own unique atmosphere. In ‘Nesting Rooks’ and ‘Table by the Window’ Emma hints at how that atmosphere is created, through texture, through subtle mark making, through different layers, an economy of colour. Yet for her this process seems a very natural evolution.

At first sight her paintings are always pleasing but after repeated viewing, under closer scrutiny her magic truly reveals itself and continues to surprise and move us. Still lives such as ‘The Striped Vase’ that echo the beauty of Winifred Nicholson. Landscapes that recall the very best of Mary’s Fed-den’s work of the 1960’s and 1970s. Views of Bodmin Moor that remind us of Ben Nicholson’s Banks Head - Cumbrian Landscape (1928) at Kettles Yard. Emma’s roots are deep in a noble traditionand yet her work is instantly recognisable as her own, she has found her own language.
