Emmanuel Catholic Church which means, God is with us, is a faithful community of believers dedicated to proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ as taught by the Roman Catholic Church through word, sacrament,

and service. As one parish family of God, we live by faith, truth, and love as we value the sanctity of life in all its stages and make the Holy Eucharist the center of our lives. Through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, the consultation with our parish ministries, we desire to be witnesses of God’s presence as we share our gifts of

time, talent, and treasure with God’s Family.

Twenty-Eighth Sunday In Ordinary Time (A) October 11th, 2020

Is 25: 6-10a / Ps 23: 1-6 / Phil 4: 12-14. 19-20 / Mt 22: 1-14 or 22: 1-10

Jesus, our Treasure Let us reflect for a short time on the gospel for today. First of all, we see that the king loves his son deeply. He focuses all his attention on him because he regards him as very special. And when his son gets married, the king holds a marvelous feast. “See,” he says “I have my dinner all prepared. My oxen and fatted cattle have been slaughtered. Everything is ready. Come to the wedding. This, we may surmise, helps us to understand why the king was si upset when the guests did not show up. It is as Jesus says: they did not come to the wedding because they were busy with other things. One had a farm, another had a business, and so on. Now, what this suggests is that deep down they didn't think very much of the son. He simply wasn’t important to them. If he were important, surely they would have put aside everything and gone to the banquet. But in refusing to attend, they neglected to honor not only the son but the king as well. What is the point of the parable? We must honor Jesus, the son of the king (God the Father). He must be the focus of our life. “Keep your eyes on Jesus,” says St. Paul. Treasure him! Make him the most important person of your life. Talk to him constantly, as you would to your best friend. Tell him all your joys and troubles share everything with him. Make him the apple of your eye. Let us ask God to bless us in a special way. May Jesus be the treasure of our heart. And may we do everything we possibly can to frow closer to him and know him better our Saviors, our good, loving, and best friend.

Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil; May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; And do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and all evil spirits who wander through the world for the ruin of souls. Amen."

St. Michael Prayer

Prayer Before Communion O Lord, I believe and profess that you are truly Christ,

Son of the living God, who came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the first. Accept me this day as a partaker of your mystical supper O Son of God. May the partaking of your holy mysteries, O

Lord, be not for judgement or condemnation, but for the healing of body and soul. I also believe and profess that this, which I am about to receive, is a truly your

most precious Body & Blood, which, I pray, make me worthy to receive for the remission of all my sins and

life everlasting. Amen.

Prayer Before Communion A Mass Attendance Report Card Dear Parish Family, We're delighted to inform you that mass attendance has been steadily growing – as regular attendees, you probably knew that! What you might not have realized was that the last two weeks have been over the top suc-cessful! The weekend of 9/26-27 saw 650 parishioners back safely attending mass while this past weekend saw 644. That's a 45% increase from where we started for you math lovers. The 4PM Saturday mass has been at full capacity for the last 5 weeks. The noon mass has been at capacity 3 of the last 5 weeks. And open seats the 9 and 10:30 masses have been dwindling to 5 or fewer. Adding to the boost in attendance is the 10AM chil-dren's mass which has been seeing about 50-plus at-tendees. And now the good news… Attendance at the 4PM mass has been so good, Fr. Zamora is announcing a second Saturday evening mass that will begin at 4:00 in Columbus Hall beginning on 10/17. So for those of you who may be worried that the 4PM mass may be too crowded, we've got extra space for you now! God Bless, The Ministry of Hospitality

Hello Families, We are eager to begin our 2020-2021 Religious Education Program. Registration is open and available online on the Emmanuel Website. You may also fill a form out by visit-ing the office during office hours. Emmanuel Catholic Church along with the Diocese has worked diligently to develop a re-opening plan that allows our families and students to return to class and the Chil-dren’s Mass. Our first Children’s Mass will be at 10:00am on September 20th, 2020. Our Children’s Masses will fol-low the protocols in place by the diocese and will take place in Columbus Hall to allow seating to accommodate fami-lies and social distancing measures. We kindly request that all families use hand sanitizer as they enter Columbus Hall and follow guidelines for wearing masks. Our classes for Kindergarten through fifth grade will also begin on September 20th. Grades 6th-9th (Confirmation class) will begin October 11th and follow the 2nd and 3rd Sunday of the month schedule as in the past. Our classrooms will be assigned based on student numbers and seating arranged to limit face to face contact. All teachers and students will be required to use hand sanitizer as they enter the classroom as well as have their tempera-ture screened. Anyone with a temperature higher than 100.2 degrees will be sent home. Families are expected to screen their children for a fever and other potential symp-toms before coming to Mass and Religious Education clas-ses. All students must wear face masks and adhere to social distancing guidelines while in the classroom. Enhanced cleaning protocols have been established to dis-infect the classroom areas daily. Carl will be present on Sundays to handle cleaning high-touch surface areas be-tween classes especially during the Sundays we have the transition of the Elementary School students to Middle School and H.S. students. We will provide the necessary cleaning and disinfecting supplies for teachers to use as needed. This plan and any other related policies and procedures may be revised at any time. We look forward to our stu-dents return and we look forward to walking this journey of faith with them. May God bless you and may he always be at your side and walk with you as you navigate through these changing times.

Saint of the Week

Saint John XXIII Saint of the Day for October 11th

Saint John XXIII’s Story

Although few people had as great an impact on the 20th century as Pope John XXIII, he avoided the lime-light as much as possible. Indeed, one writer has noted that his “ordinariness” seems one of his most remarkable qualities. The firstborn son of a farming family in Sotto il Monte, near Bergamo in northern Italy, Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli was always proud of his down-to-earth roots. In Bergamo’s diocesan seminary, he joined the Secular Franciscan Order. After his ordination in 1904, Fr. Roncalli returned to Rome for canon law studies. He soon worked as his bishop’s secretary, Church history teacher in the seminary, and as publisher of the diocesan paper. His service as a stretcher-bearer for the Italian army during World War I gave him a firsthand knowledge of war. In 1921, Fr. Roncalli was made national director in Italy of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith. He also found time to teach patristics at a seminary in the Eternal City. In 1925, he became a papal diplomat, serving first in Bulgaria, then in Turkey, and finally in France. Dur-ing World War II, he became well acquainted with Orthodox Church leaders. With the help of Germany’s am-bassador to Turkey, Archbishop Roncalli helped save an estimated 24,000 Jewish people. Named a cardinal and appointed patriarch of Venice in 1953, he was finally a residential bishop. A month short of entering his 78th year, Cardinal Roncalli was elected pope, taking the name John after his father and the two patrons of Rome’s cathedral, St. John Lateran. Pope John took his work very seriously but not himself. His wit soon became proverbial, and he began meeting with political and religious leaders from around the world. In 1962, he was deeply involved in efforts to resolve the Cuban missile crisis. His most famous encyclicals were Mother and Teacher (1961) and Peace on Earth (1963). Pope John XXIII en-larged the membership in the College of Cardinals and made it more international. At his address at the open-ing of the Second Vatican Council, he criticized the “prophets of doom” who “in these modern times see noth-ing but prevarication and ruin.” Pope John XXIII set a tone for the Council when he said, “The Church has al-ways opposed… errors. Nowadays, however, the Spouse of Christ prefers to make use of the medicine of mercy rather than that of severity.” On his deathbed, Pope John said: “It is not that the gospel has changed; it is that we have begun to under-stand it better. Those who have lived as long as I have…were enabled to compare different cultures and tradi-tions, and know that the moment has come to discern the signs of the times, to seize the opportunity and to look far ahead.” “Good Pope John” died on June 3, 1963. Saint John Paul II beatified him in 2000, and Pope Francis can-onized him in 2014

Reflection

Throughout his life, Angelo Roncalli cooperated with God’s grace, believing that the job at hand was worthy of his best ef-forts. His sense of God’s providence made him the ideal per-son to promote a new dialogue with Protestant and Orthodox Christians, as well as with Jews and Muslims. In the sometimes noisy crypt of St. Peter’s Basilica, many people become silent on seeing the simple tomb of Pope John XXIII, grateful for the gift of his life and holiness. After his beatification, his tomb was moved into the basilica itself.

Lumen Vitae is a humanitarian organization, rooted in Catholic values, which alleviates the poverty and suffer-

ing in some of the most marginalized communities in the world. In Haiti, currency volatility, political corruption

and gang violence has left the country, especially the families whom we journey with, in a desperate position

where they are not able to have food on the table every day.

This year, we’re making it our priority to feed our 500 families in Haiti, in our Help Fight Hunger campaign,

from November 1st through October 31st, 2021. To help us reach this goal, we’re excited to host our first ever

virtual “Race for the Light,” a fitness challenge that encourages people to get fit, spread awareness about the

sufferings of others and support poor families.

The race takes place from October 18, 2020 – November 1,2020. Our goal for this race is $100,000, and we

were hoping that you could help us reach that goal!

By registering for our race, you’ll be able to feed poor families in Haiti who otherwise struggle to find a means to

provide for themselves. Every $40 raised is able to feed a family of four for a month. Families who are recipi-

ents of this aid become participants in other volunteer projects in their own communities where they are encour-

aged to become agents of giving. A donation from your organization causes a ripple effect of giving which goes

around the world!

Prayer for Protection Against Storms

Loving and gracious God, as in all times, we turn to You and implore Your protection and healing as we face a new threat to our health and peaceful well-being in the coronavirus pandemic before us. Help us to be united with each other and with all of our brothers and sisters around the world affected by this illness. We pray for all those in the medical field who are assisting patients and in the field of science who are discerning a cure, as well as for all government leaders. Remember those who, through this virus, have passed from this life as well as their families in their loss.

At this time of fragile uncertainty, we also humbly implore You to grant us prudence, hope, courage and pa-tience. Dispel from us fear, panic and distrust which disrupt us in spirit to the detriment of our well-being.

We make our prayer in the name of your beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, who always cured those who were sick with various diseases and drove out many demons. Our Lady, Patroness of our Diocese, Queen of the Apostles and Comforter of the Afflicted, pray for us, Amen.

Prayer for God’s Protection in the face of the Coronavirus Pandemic

God our Father, Creator of the Universe and Lord over all creation, we humbly stand before you as your chil-dren in thanksgiving for your loving care and protection. We ask that you keep us safe from all hurricanes which may threaten us in the coming seasons. Protect us from all fear and anxiety of storms and give us an ardent trust and hope in Your love and mercy. You alone have the power to command the sea, the wind and the rain. You alone bring peace, calm, and safety. Father, we thank you in advance, for you arc our only Refuge. We ask this through Christ, Your Son, Who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. Mary, Queen of the Apostles, and Patroness of our Diocese, pray for us.
