The GreatestWork on Earth

In 1919 the Sisters of Notre Dame deNamur, an international Catholic religiouscongregation, defied the prejudices ofthe day and founded Emmanuel College forwomen. With their mission of “makingknown God’s goodness... educating for life,”they laid the foundations for generations ofbright, motivated women who had had feweducational resources. Today, EmmanuelCollege is a vibrantly co-ed experience. Andthe same stones laid nearly 100 yearsago are vividly reflected across the quad inthe glass-fronted Jean Yawkey Center, the active, open student center that hasbecome the living room of our campus.

Chris Borges ’10, originally from New Jersey, has spent

two years working with Dr. Josef Kurtz, Assistant Professor

of Biology, on bone marrow transplant research at

world-renowned Massachusetts General Hospital

“Over the past year, some of theresearch that Chris has beeninvolved with has been accepted forpresentation at international meetings, where scientists have been able to seethe work that is being done atEmmanuel College, by EmmanuelCollege students. Through his work withme in the lab, he has gained a deeperunderstanding for how science getsdone, and being a part of the research

“I saw Dr. Kurtz give a talk on hisresearch during Accepted StudentVisit Day. That was all it took for meto become fascinated by his work.Through our research, we look at waysto make the treatment regimen for abone marrow transplant less toxic. Not many undergraduate students getto have the experience that I have had.It has provided me opportunities in thefield that I never thought possible.”

Merck Research Laboratories, Boston

Emmanuel College is the only college in thecountry to boast a 12-story, 300,000-square-foot private research facility right oncampus that is doing important work inthe fields of cancer treatment, Alzheimer’sdisease and obesity. It is owned by Merck &Co., the global research-drivenpharmaceutical company, on land they leasefrom the College. In return, EmmanuelCollege has access and opportunity to aworld few undergraduates ever get to see.Every summer, Merck selects five studentsfor a special paid internship program; oneis always an Emmanuel student, hand-picked by the faculty that knows them best, their own science faculty. Merckresearchers and scientists speak in ourseminar programs. Merck offers uniquepieces of scientific laboratory equipment tothe College, as well. It is an unusualpartnership and a valuable one.

Samuel LoCascio (Vienna, Austria) andYnes Helou (Foxborough, MA) Class of2009, were selected as Merck summerinterns for 2008.

“ I have always aspired to work with greatminds and partake in influential research. My time as a Merck intern certainlyprovided me that chance. After I graduatefrom Emmanuel, I intend to focus mystudies in pharmacology, so the internshipheld great relevance to my future academiccareer. Getting the opportunity to work in apharmaceutical company that hascontributed so much to human healthis priceless.”

Ynes

“ It was exciting to be able to apply all that Iam learning as an Emmanuel Collegestudent to a job where my work could makea big difference. The experience I gainedduring my internship with Merck wasextremely valuable, but it was because ofmy education at Emmanuel that I was giventhe opportunity in the first place. There arevery few colleges that provide the kind ofopportunities and support that we receiveas students here.”

“Take some risks in your collegecareer,” urges Professor St. Clair, “nomatter how serious you are aboutscience, while you’re here, take acourse in something you’re not goingto be able to do again.”

For 30 years, Professor St. Clair hasurged Emmanuel students to pursueboth a disciplined analysis in scienceand an open curiosity in the world atlarge. He believes a strong liberal artseducation is fundamentally aboutthinking. He pushes students tochallenge assumptions, to question.

“ Why do people act a certain way?Why is a building built that way?How did it happen that this presidentwas elected rather than that one?Did Freud destroy more things in the20th century than he created?” hechallenges, “This is more than data tobe mastered and filed away.”

Our distinguished faculty publishes, exhibits and researches.Presents, composes and chairs. Inspires, stimulates and collaborates. AtEmmanuel, classes are small enough for your professors to know who you areand what’s important to you. They expect you to challenge them, to think, toquestion, to explore. Their mission is to make knowledge matter. Whether theyteach English or Management, Biostatistics or Education, they believe in thepromise of a liberal arts and sciences education to transform students intoconfident, curious citizens of the world of ideas.

Here are a handful of professors you might run into on a stroll across the quad:

“ Psychology is a pretty broad discipline,”says Professor St. Clair, “At its mostbasic, it offers good habits of research, critical thinking, exposure toquantitative methods and skillsfor jobs.”

At the same time he celebratesthe distinctive opportunities Emmanuelhas to offer, “Our psychology classesare quite different from each other. Wehave moved quite rapidly into manydemanding sub-disciplines ofpsychology, including theneurosciences.”

Artist, Professor, Advisor.Megumi Naitoh is all three to thestudents of Emmanuel College. Aftergrowing up in Tokyo, surrounded by12.5 million other people, ProfessorNaitoh takes the art of individualexpression quite seriously. But sheteaches it with a sense of humor andtremendous passion.

As you might expect from an artistwhose work combines manipulatedpixilated images and clay, she teachesstudents to articulate why they likewhat they make. “Without knowing whyit is successful it is not successful,”she says.

“ First-year students come to Ceramicsthinking they’re going to make a bowl.Instead they get the rich historyof ceramics, some simple chemistry ofthe medium, an understanding oftechnique, things they never learnedin high school.”

Boston enriches the entire experience. One day, she’s taking students throughthe Museum of Fine Arts, experiencingart most people see only in books, the next she’s guiding them to a galleryopening in Boston’s hip HarrisonAvenue art district.

Professor Naitoh is also the facultyadvisor to the Art Club, whichmight make a beautiful blanket for ahomeless shelter and take a tripto the galleries of New York City inthe same year.

“All history is based on decisionshuman beings have made,” saysProfessor Marion. “In college, Historyis more than dates and names, it islearning to analyze and understandthose decisions.”

Professor Marion debunks the myth ofthe aloof professor with his easymanner and a quick smile. He findsthat students come to Emmanuelready to learn and eager for theexperience. “For some students it’sactually easier to do well in collegethan it was in high school,” he says.

“ There are more choices in thecurriculum, and students find theintensity of the discussion ismore invigorating.”

He, in turn, is energized by theirintensity. “Students who come toEmmanuel want to do something withwhat they learn. They are genuinelyoutraged by injustice,” he says.

“ It creates a contagious empathy.”

This fits Professor Marion’s teachingstyle perfectly. “We encouragestudents to make connectionsbetween themselves and what theylearn, rather than just sit and becomefattened by information.”

“ Bring your own context to college,” hepromises, “and together we willchallenge traditional thinking. We willreframe old ideas, skew them if youwill, until they lead us to answers wewouldn’t normally find.”

Meet Javier Marion,Assistant Professor

of History

“I don’t want their minds to begated communities,” says SisterMary of her students. “I will doanything I can to take down the gates.I teach two Service Learning coursesand the transformation I see in thestudents is inspiring.”

SOC2113, Research Methods, is one. This class went out among 25 ethnicparishes in the Archdiocese of Boston—from Ugandan to Vietnamese, fromGerman to Korean—to collect data. They conducted interviews withmembers of the communities andmade multiple visits to the churches.“The confidence my students getbetween the first day of class and thelast is amazing. They’re diving into thedeep end of the pool,” Sister Marysays.

Service learning builds bridgesbetween commitment and action.Emmanuel students are encouraged toarticulate their social consciousness. They may help feed the poor inhomeless shelters or make adifference by working at theMassachusetts State House. Thecampus is alive with a realcommitment to social justice.

“ After I make the bridges,” says SisterMary, “the students initiate theirown versions. They embrace what theywant to do in light of their owninterests and talents.”

“ We spark the fire,” says Sister Mary,“ but the students keep it burning.”

Why is a college education important to you?I am a first-generation Lebanese American and only the second member of my family toattend college. I see my education as the first step to my future success.

What interested you in attending Emmanuel? My older sister, Nina, was a member of the first coed class at Emmanuel. Her time hereallowed me to visit and experience the College in a more natural and relaxed environment. Also, I appreciated the College’s great location in Boston and liked the idea of being just atrain ride away from home.

You recently took part in a service-learning course. What was theexperience like?As a management major, I enrolled in Principles of Marketing with Associate Professor ofManagement Dr. Mirtha Crisostomo. I worked on a project with Goodwill in which Ievaluated its current job training program and created a marketing plan to assist inincreasing enrollment. Professor Crisostomo emphasized how significant our work wouldbe in helping the non-profit organization and the class offered a great opportunity to giveback to the community.

How does being an Emmanuel student help you achieve your future goals?Emmanuel is preparing me to graduate and enter the professional world with confidencethat I will be able to succeed. The knowledge that I have gained as a student at theCollege, inside and out, will guide me in my future.

Any thoughts on what you would like to do after graduation?I hope to eventually attend graduate school for an MBA in international management. Iwould like to work in the Boston area and pursue a career in the global business arena.

Where are you from?I am from West Bridgewater, Massachusetts.

Why did you choose Emmanuel College?Emmanuel was always my top choice for schools in Boston. When I was accepted, therewas no doubt in my mind that it was the place I wanted to be for the next four years. Many of my high school teachers were Emmanuel graduates and spoke highly of theCollege. I liked the idea of attending a school where professors know you by name, thecampus is beautiful and not to mention, just one block from Fenway Park!

What is your major?I am majoring in psychology with a concentration in health and counseling.

You have twice visited South Africa as part of a service trip. What was it like?South Africa is one of the most beautiful countries I have ever seen and the trip wasabsolutely amazing. We took part in service work related to the United Nation’sMillennium Development Goals, which were created by world leaders in 2000 with hopesof ending poverty, hunger and disease in Africa. Our group did as much as we could tohelp those whom we met. We listened to their stories, sometimes fighting back tears tohear of their experiences. It was these moments that led me to return the following year. And they are ones I will never forget.

What would you like to do after graduation?I would like to find a job that will enable me to work with young women, preferablymiddle school age, in the Greater Boston area. I eventually hope to pursue a master’sdegree in psychology as well. As a student at Emmanuel, I have been provided amazingopportunities academically, spiritually and emotionally. I feel that if I had attendedanother school I would not have been as fortunate. I am very grateful and proud to say Iattend Emmanuel College.

Where are you from?I am from Bethel, Connecticut.

What is your major? My major is English with a concentration in writing and literature. I have always beeninterested in literary arts magazines, as I am a lover of both creative writing and art.During my sophomore year, I also decided to minor in graphic design. I interned withEmmanuel’s Office of Marketing Communications last year, which I really enjoyed. Ilearned a great deal about design and the experience added to my interest of pursuing acareer in the field.

How about other activities you are involved in?I am a member of the women’s track & field team as well as president of Bang! Magazine, the College’s literary publication. I have really enjoyed being part of both organizations. Ispecialize in the high jump, long jump and short sprints for the Saints track team and havebeen involved with Bang! Magazine ever since my freshman year.

What makes your college experience special?Emmanuel’s urban location and membership within the Colleges of the Fenway issomething I truly enjoy about being a student here. I love that there are so many collegestudents in the area and that we get to attend events at other colleges. I’ve been toreadings at MIT, concerts at Berklee College of Music, art galleries at Boston Universityand Massachusetts College of Art and Design, theatre productions at Wheelock andparticipated in many more off-campus activities. Plus, I love that the Museum of Fine Artsis just around the corner. Overall, Emmanuel’s location has so much to offer.

What’s next?I hope to attend graduate school and then pursue a career in graphic design while workingindependently on my creative writing. One thing that really interests me is writing andillustrating children’s books so that I can combine my love of art and writing.
