WHAT’S INSIDE:
4-H...What’s in it for YOU? The excitement of fair is over and a new 4-H year has begun. 4-H is a powerful
vehicle for helping kids develop competence, confidence, character, and
compassion for others as evidenced by research conducted by Tufts University.
The study also revealed that kids who participated in 4-H were 3.5 times more
likely to contribute to their families, themselves and their communities. Eighth
graders who participated in 4-H programs regularly, had more confidence and
higher grades and were 1.6 times more likely to plan to go on to college. The
opportunities for positive youth development reduce the likelihood of youth to
engage in risk behaviors such as underage drinking, smoking, bullying and
vandalism. The 4-H promise to kids and parents is: Fun, Friends, Choices, Great
trips and events, A safe place to learn and do new things, Leadership,
Citizenship, and Communication skills, Service opportunities, Scholarship
opportunities, Adults who care, and Hands-on experiences.
Is it worth it? You bet! Tell your friends!

COUNTRY OF ORIGIN LABELING REQUIRED IN 2011/2012—The USDA is again requiring COOL for all livestock. What 4-H’ers Need to Do: *The Iowa COOL Coalition has a simple affidavit that can work for all species of livestock (beef, sheep, swine, poultry, goat). This affidavit is located at, http://www.iowabeefcenter.org/content/COOL/COOL%20Forms.doc. Page 1 explains the steps needed to be taken as well as example documents that can be used for an audit trail. Page 2 is the actual affidavit. *4-H’ers who raise their own livestock for projects need to fill this affidavit out and keep it on file for a minimum of two yrs. *4-H’ers who purchase their livestock from others MUST have the producer fill out the affidavit, give it to the 4-H’er, and the 4-H’er should keep the affidavit on file for a minimum of two years.
The members of the 4-H Horse committee (Teresa Olson, Kyle Egeland and Jessica Haukoos) would like to extend an invitation to all interested youth to join the 4-H horse program. The committee members have a combined total of 50+ years of horse show experience in showing as well as judging and have a wealth of knowledge they want to share with the youth of the area. They are working on getting a new special interest horse group started and finding 4-H horse mentors who volunteer their time, horse, and experience to offer a chance for interested 4-H'ers to participate in the horse project area. This is a great opportunity for those who live in town or even on a farm and have always dreamed of learning to ride and take care of a horse. Call Teresa Olson if you are interested in participating: (712) 867-4436.
First LEGO League began more than 20 years ago with the idea that we could inspire young people to discover the wonders of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM), and, through that discovery, one day help to make this world a better place. Twenty years later, they are more inspired than ever, thanks to the hundreds of thousands of Team Members, Mentors, Coaches, Sponsors, Parents, Teachers, Government Officials, and Volunteers who have helped the organization grow from 28 teams in a New Hampshire high-school gym to more than 22,000 teams from over 55 countries around the world. If you would like to be a part of the LEGO Robotics group the ―Estherville Meteors‖ here in Emmet County, please call leader Randal Moffitt for more details and practice times—362-8916. More leaders are also needed contact Randal if interested!

BUCKET BOTTLE CALVES
EAR TAGGERS
MARKET BEEF
We are still missing quite a few
ear taggers that we lent out for
people to use to tag their
livestock last spring. If you
have one of these, please
return it to the Extension Office
ASAP so people can use it for
tagging animals this year!
Thanks!
If you have a bucket-bottle calf
that you plan to bring back as a
breeding heifer in 2011, you
should have the calf vaccinated
for brucellosis before 10
months of age.
Pens of three and individual market beef
animals need to be weighed-in and DNA
verified on Saturday, December 10th
(snow date is December 17th) from 8:00
-11:00AM at the Gary Madden Farm—
5150 240th St, Ringsted. Ear tags must
be in before weigh-in and are for sale at
the Extension Office for $1.50 (FFA
calves must have FFA tags)!
If you are planning to show beef at the
Iowa State Fair, you will need to have
your calves verified through retinal
imaging. This will be done the Friday
afternoon before weigh-in. (Let the
Extension Office know by December
2nd if you plan to retinal image calves
for the Iowa State Fair so that we will
have enough supplies on hand). Those
who plan to verify for Ak-Sar-Ben will do
this on Saturdday—let us know by Dec
2nd, so we have supplies on hand.
HORSE PROJECT GROUP SHOOTING SPORTS GROUP
EMMET COUNTY 4-H PROJECT GROUPS

The group will be meeting once a month January through October, either at the Estherville Law Center (winter) or the Izaak Walton League shooting range. The group practices with archery, air rifles, muzzleloaders, and shot guns (for age 12 and up). They also learn about safety, how to clean equipment used, and more. There is a limit of 25 for the group. Even if you were in the group last year, we need to know if you plan to participate again this year. New members are also welcome! All youth in 4th through 12th grade who are current 4-H members in Emmet County are eligible. All new members would begin in January and must attend safety discussions before practicing with equipment. All guns and archery supplies are provided.

Participants can select either June 8 – 16 or June 15 – 23 to attend the trip. 4-H’ers and adult chaperone will travel by charted bus to Washington D.C. Some highlights of the trip are: Lincoln’s Springfield Home, Gettysburg Battlefield, Capitol Hill, Smithsonian Museums, Mount Vernon and Kennedy Center. Beside tours and workshop you’ll have time for socializing and meeting new friends. Cost of the trip is $1,370. This includes lodging, transportation, tour site admissions, and most meals. Registration and a $350.00 deposit will be required to secure a spot. Registration opens October 1, 2011 and closes December 15, 2011. Powering the Future On October 5, 2011, millions of young people across the nation will become scientists for the day during the fourth annual 4-H National Youth Science Day (NYSD). NYSD is the premiere national rallying event for year-round 4-H Science programming, bringing together youth, volunteers and educators from the nation’s 109 land-grant colleges and universities to simultaneously complete the National Science Experiment. The 2011 National Science Experiment, Wired for Wind, will explore how to engineer renewable energy technologies, and the positive impact that they can have in communities across the country and the world. Prepare for the 2011 NYSD event by watching the step-by-step how-to video, which lays the foundation for an exciting discussion on renewable energy.
