Keepfloorsascleananddryaspossibletopreventaccidentalslipswithoraroundhandtools. Sparksproducedbyironandsteelhandtoolscanbeadangerousignitionsourcearoundflammablesubstances. Usespark-resistanttoolsmadefrombrass,plastic,aluminum,orwoodwherethishazardexists.

guns.Usepowertools fortheirintendeduseonly.Neveryankthecordorthehosetodisconnect itfromwhatit’sattachedto.This cancausedamagetotheprotectivesheathorexposeenergizedwiringespeciallyiffrequentlymishandledinthisway.Disconnectbypullingontheplug.Youshouldnevercarryatoolbythecordorhose forthesamereason.Keepcordsandhosesawayfromheat,oil,andsharpedges. Avoidaccidentalstarting. Donotholdafingerontheswitchbuttonwhilecarryingaplugged-intool. Keepyourfingerawayfromthestartbuttonuntilyouarereadytousethetool.Besuretokeepgoodfootingandmaintaingoodbalance. Wearproperapparelwhenoperatingpowertools.Looseclothing,drawstrings,orjewelrycanbecomecaughtinmovingparts. Keepallrequiredguardsandsafetydevicesontoolsandmachineryinplaceandfunctioningproperly.Makesureallelectricpoweredhandtoolsareequippedwithaconstantpressureswitchthatwillshutoffthepowerwhenthepressureisreleased.

Operating,repairing andservicing equipment onafarmcanbeadangerousactivity. It iscrucialtoknowhowtoprotectyourselffrominjurieswhenworkingwithequipment.Accidentscanoccurwhenmachinery isbeingrepairedorservicedandis notlockedout.Theseaccidents cancauseseriousinjurieslikefractures,amputations,andevendeath.Lockingoutprevents theunexpectedstart-upofequipmentwhenitisbeingservicedorrepaired.Tagout shouldonlybeusedwithlockout,unlesslockingouttheequipmentisimpossible. Lockingoutandtaggingpoweratitssourceisimportantwhilerepairingoradjustingmachinerybecauseisensuresthatpowerdoesnotreachthemachinery.

Lockout/Tagout appliestoequipmentthatis: electric,hydraulic,and pneumatic. Hydraulicequipmentisoperated,movedoreffectedbymeansofwaterorotherliquid.Pneumatic equipment worksbyairpressure.Gravitycanalsobeconsideredahazardousformofenergy.It isagoodideatomakesureequipmentsubjecttotheeffectsofgravityisalsoimmobileduringservicing. Lockout/Tagout includesanyequipment thatuses apowersource. Thisincludes: lights,grinders, heaters, fans, PTOs, augers, andfeedmixers.

Donotattempttooperateorserviceequipmentyouarenottrainedandcertifiedfor.Ifyounotice apieceofequipmentthatneedsservicing,butarenotqualifiedtoworkonorauthorizedtoperformlockout/tagoutnotifyyoursupervisorimmediately.

Lockoutequipmentbeforerepairingit. Shutdownthepowersource. Isolatetheequipmentwithpadlocksorchains. Applyawarningtagsuchas“DoNotOperate”onboththeequipmentandthepowersource. Safelyreleaseanystoredenergy.Attempttorestarttheequipmenttomakesureitwillnotmoveduringservicing,butonlyaftercheckingtomakesureeveryoneisoutoftheway. Replaceallguardsonthemachineryafterservicing. Followtheoperation’ssafetyproceduresforlockout/tagout. Let’s review thestepstoproperlylockoutequipment.First,shutdownthepowersource.Next,tagtheequipmentandpowersource.Then,safelyreleaseanystoredenergy.Next,testthecontrolstomakesurethemachineisnotoperative.Lastly,aftertheequipmenthasbeenserviced,besuretoreplacealltheguardsonthemachine.
