Community Service Doing community service provides students with opportunities to become active in the community and positive contributors to society. Community service or volunteerism enables students to acquire skills and knowledge as well as provide a service to others that need it in some way. There are multiple benefits and gains from community service. Some of these benefits are:
1. Psychological benefits: life satisfaction, feeling good about yourself, and decreases stress and depression.
2. Social benefits: Engages students with the community, creates special bonds with the population served, as well as increased social responsibility.
3. Cognitive benefits: Helps students enhance their knowledge, earn new experiences, and develop new skills.

Smart about Reading with Poindexter Elementary

Student-Athlete’s Christmas Cards
We provide blank Christmas Cards for our SA’s so they can fill it out and wish faculty and university staff happy holidays to appreciate all the hard work they have provided to make a positive experience out of their staying at Jackson State.
Life Skills .Life skills events are a big part of our department as they help our students to:
●Find new ways of thinking and problem solving
●Recognize the impact of their actions and teaches them to take responsibility for what they do
●Build confidence both in verbal skills and for group collaboration and cooperation
●Analyze options, make decisions and understand why they make certain choices outside the classroom
●Develop a greater sense of self-awareness and appreciation for others
Components of Life Skills Events
1. Academics
2. Athletics
3. Personal Development
4. Career Development
5. University Involvement
Life Skills
Productive Procrastination (Academics)The seminar was designed to inform students on how productive they can still be even when they wait to the last minute to do their work. For example, when they have a paper to complete by the following day and they wait until the night before to complete, they can do their best work if they follow certain steps (Presenter provided the proper steps to take when procrastinating to write a paper).

Financial Literacy Seminar (Personal Development)
Regions Bank sponsored financial expert, Eric Smith, to come speak with our SA’s, as well as the athletics staff, about the importance of having good credit and how to manage your money wisely.
Dress for Success Seminar (Career Development)
Head Women’s Basketball and Volleyball Coach, along with former baseball SA, spoke with SA’s on how to dress for class presentations, graduate school and job interviews.
Fun Day at the Early Childhood Center (University Involvement)
The Early Childhood Center on campus has been one of JSU Athletics’ biggest supporters, so once a month SA’s take a day to visit the early childhood center. During the visits they put together different activities for the children to show them how much the SA’s appreciate all of the support they receive from them.
3 Simple Steps to Help Prepare SA’s for life after College
1. Assess student's commitment to their athletic identity
2. Provide them with a support system
3. Provide them with strategies to use when transitioning to life after college
