Empress Joséphine created an extensive collection of roses, gathering plants from

her native Martinique and from other places around the world. She grew some

250 varieties of roses

The Château de Malmaison is a country house (or château) in the city of Rueil-Malmaison about 12 km from Paris. It was formerly the

residence of Joséphine de Beauharnais

Through her daughter,

Hortense, she was the maternal grandmother of

Napoléon III. Through her son, Eugène, she was

the great-grandmother of later Swedish

and Danish kings and queens.

After her divorce from Napoléon, Joséphine received

Malmaison in her own right, along with a pension of 5

million francs a year, and

remained there until her death

in 1814

Joséphine de Beauharnais née

1763 – 29 May 1814 was the first wife of Napoleon I, and thus the first Empress of the French. Her first husband Alexandre de Beauharnais was guillotined during

the Reign of Terror, and she was

imprisoned in the Carmes prison until

her release five days after Alexandre's

execution
