Contents Foreword

This past fiscal year 2012/13 was, as expected, a great challenge for all those

involved.

A relatively good though heterogeneous potato harvest by European stan-

dards formed a strong basis for business development up to the end of 2012.

With the expectation of a very large grain harvest, potato starch escaped the

massive price pressure at the start of 2013 and fell temporarily. With firm

price discipline and supported by considerably changed growing conditions

for potatoes up to the summer of 2013, we succeeded in concluding the fis-

cal year 2012/2013 satisfactorily. This is all the more remarkable considering

the fact that the Emsland Group paid the highest historical price for starch

potatoes.

The floods in southern Germany destroyed up to 50% of the potato crop

there, while in Central Europe the ongoing drought will cost an average

of up to 25% of the crop. In Germany as a whole, the year’s potato crop is

expected to be the smallest in decades (approx. 9.5 million tons).

This is all reflected in a fixed potato price and will drive demand to a peak

level until the next harvest.

What does this mean for the Emsland Group?

We must make consistent efforts to direct the available potatoes to the

areas that will allow for the greatest added value. In this context the proces-

sing of potato flakes and granules takes first priority. The ‚Food Innovations’

and ‚Technical Specialties‘ units have carried out extensive analyses and

fixed their key segments for the coming years.

We are currently in the process of identifying suitable resources and will

draft a new strategy for the group at the start of 2014.

Our goal here is a clear, continued focus on key customers and the develop-

ment of those partnerships. We hope this will also allow us to mobilize new

potential in order to be able to demonstrate innovative product solutions

for our clients.

In terms of investment, we have tackled the final expansion of the

Cloppenburg Plant and will be installing the last drum in the summer of

2014. With 92,000 tons of production capacity for potato flakes, there is

nothing to match it anywhere in the world.

In order to continue in our new direction, we began to produce potato flakes

in Emlichheim in October 2013. The plant will be set up completely in line

with food standards and in the coming years we will be considering the

possibility of installing new receiving technology that allows for separate

parallel processing of starch and industry potatoes. The new plant access

road and tarehouse have already been implemented accordingly.

The straw power plant has already delivered its first steam to the plant in

Emlichheim and is currently being further optimized.

Emsland Food has been growing since 1st July 2013. Since that date, the

former MKV has operated under the name Emsland Food, Hagenow Plant.

The project centre LEH and the energy management department of the old

MKV have remained at the same location.

The introduction of the new ERP program INFOR-BLENDING didn’t go exact-

ly as planned. Despite the long preparation period, the go-live at the site in

Emlichheim from 1st May 2013 brought massive problems with it. These have

since been identified and dealt with for the most part.

Over months, the nerves of our clients and also everyone involved in the

supply chain were badly strained. We need to change this promptly. We are

confident that all the desired functions will be implemented before the end

of the fiscal year 2013/14 so that process optimization can begin.

The management considers that the company is in a good market position.

Strong demand for high quality potato and pea products puts us in a position

to achieve our planned profits even with reduced quantities.

We should therefore also be able to pay a competitive potato price, so that

we can also contractually secure raw materials for our clients for the coming

years. The content of the following news report is meant to give you an idea

of the status of the group’s development.

As always, please submit any suggestions to the undersigned.

B

After the recipes provided by our American

partner Allied Blending & Ingredients had been

tested to check their conformity with European

food law, there was the urgent task for our

colleagues from research and development and

purchasing department to find alternatives to

some of the ingredients which were permitted in

the EU yet delivered the same function in the mix-

ture. This demanding task is now just about to be

completed. Alongside this, the mixing system at

the Kyritz facility was modified in such a way that

these mixtures can now be produced there too.

In terms of sales, the Emsland Group has already

supplied potential customers with sample goods

imported from the USA for that sole purpose.

There have been various trial production runs with

customers which indicate that this product range

can be successfully launched on the market. With

this type of product, testing the mixture out at

customers’ plants and, if needed, adjusting the

mixture or the process parameters, form an

essential part of our sales activity. Only by doing

so can we achieve mutual success.

At this point we would once again like to extend

my thanks to all those involved for their tireless

work!

Decisive steps in the Emcheese-Mor® project

ack in the last edition of our Emsland

News, the report on a new ready-mix for

producing cheeses caused a real sensation.

The Emsland Group has further advanced the

project in terms of sales and research and de-

velopment in particular and has now taken

the critical preparatory steps towards market

launch.

Since the start of the project, two new cookers

have been bought for the research laboratory in

order to test the functions of the starch mixtures

and to further develop the Emcheese-Mor® blends.

Emsland Group expands its clean label position

he trend for label-friendly products continues

to grow and is playing an increasingly important

role in the purchase decisions of consumers. Due

to the growing demand for food that is free of

additives, the Emsland Group has worked inten-

sively on the development of functional native

starches with application-friendly properties.

Now clean label starches and potato flakes that

are produced solely using a physical process have

already been marketed successfully.

In the food industry, our Empure® products are

used in many foodstuffs in which they have a

positive effect on a variety of functions such as

thickening behavior, texture as well as stability

tolerance and process tolerance. This guarantees

an excellent appearance of food.

The requirements of such food industry products

on the supplier industry are growing steadily.

For example, the research and development

department of the Emsland Group is already facing

such challenges as stable storage under a range

of conditions, such as refrigerated and frozen

storage, and products containing salt and acids

with corresponding process-tolerant stabilities.

Using the expertise of the existing Empure®

product range, after a research period that lasted

a year, we succeeded in developing our Empure®

KS 110 as well as Empure® KS 120.

These more stable clean label starches meet the

above-mentioned requirements and can be used

in foods that need a heating process during

production and are then for example stored in cold

or refrigerated conditions (such as sauces for

ready meals, semi-preserved foods or else seaso-

ning dressings). The products Empure® KS 110

and Empure® KS 120 are medium or high-

viscosity cooking starches with a short, creamy,

glossy texture, a neutral taste and full-bodied

feeling in the mouth. On top of that they have

excellent viscosity and storage stability in acidic

or salty solutions as well as a reduced tendency

to retrograde or undergo syneresis under cooling

conditions. Both Empure® KS 110 and Empure®

KS 120 can be used as excellent binding and

thickening agents in soups and sauces, semi-

preserved foods, mayonnaise, ketchup, liquid

products as well as in snacks and catering

systems.

Furthermore we have also developed the cold-

swelling starches Empure® KJEL 110 and Empure®

KJEL 120 that allow our customers to make ex-

tended use of our clean label Empure® products

in cold-processed, acidic or salty but also pasteu-

rized liquid foods with increased storage stability.

The use of Empure® KJEL 120 causes a subsequent

delayed thickening in acidic fruit fillings or milk-

based products such as ready-made puddings

as well as good stability for storage in cooling

conditions.

The effectiveness of the newly-developed Empure®

products varies depending on the requirements on

the selected ingredients.

Other innovations in this field are our clean label

potato flakes Empure® KF 1300 and Empure®

KF 1700, which can be used in gnocchi, snacks

or other potato-based products as well as our

Empure® B clean label batter mixture.

Furthermore, the Emsland Group is currently

working on developing clean label potato

granules.

The advantages of our clean label range at a glance:

It has thus been possible to develop a clean label version of almost all products in the food industry.

Embalance® - The next potato generation

A s a leading manufacturer of potato

flakes and granules, the Emsland Group is

stepping up its research and development

activities more and more in this field.

Our latest innovation in the field of dried food

products, so-called dehydrates, are the products

in the Embalance® range. These are special potato

flakes that are produced using a newly-developed

and patented physical production process without

the use of additives.

The products are low in unwanted by-products

such as sugar, asparagine and glykoalkaloids and

some of them have a high dietary fiber content

and low calorific content.

Alongside the production of potato-based “health

and clean label products”, the developed process

has already been used successfully for the pro-

duction of dehydrated peas. So, for the first time,

low-sugar and low-fat pea flakes, which are rich

in dietary fiber and have great potential for a

range of other interesting uses, are also available

to our customers.

Initial application and production tests in the

snack industry have now confirmed that it is

possible to control the expansion behavior and

the sugar and asparagine content in extruded

food products using potato-based Embalance®

products. This enables the production of largely

acrylamide-reduced and thus healthier foodstuffs.

Furthermore, Embalance® has excellent water

absorption behavior and can be used for example

as a binding and texturing agent.

In addition to the food industry, the segment

of premium pet food is also sure to be a very

interesting market for this promising new product

range.

Mr. Christian Kemper (Manager Sales and

Marketing Food) and Dr. Karl Ludwig Woll

(Senior Project Manager) would be happy to

support you, if further information’s on

Embalance® are required.

nce again, numerous participants from all over the world took part

in this years’ third Advanced Food Training, which took place in Emlichheim

between 22nd April and 24th April 2013.

The goal remained the same: to provide agencies with a basic knowledge

about new product developments and their theoretical and practical

applications. This improved understanding of the product has proven to

be an essential component on the market, as well as for

customer service representatives’ professionalism.

After Mr. Kemper greeted participants with a

warm welcome, he held the first presentation

about current market conditions and the

future focus of the Emsland Group. The first

product-specific presentations followed,

topics included the use of tapioca starch in

yogurt (especially with Emden® TVH-15) and

the new innovation cooperation Emcheese-

Mor®, amongst others.

Participants, like in previous years, were able to gain knowledge by

participating in practical workshops held by sales managers and research

and development specialists. This helped make the theoretical parts more

tangible and gave them a direct reference to build on.

During the first workshop, participants became very excited regarding

tapioca starch in yogurt and the “all-in-one” solution Emcheese-Mor®, as

well as its effect on the final products.

The second day also featured an exciting program with presentations on

Embalance® K1000 and new clean label products (incl. Empure®-range).

These presentations included many examples of application and product

advantages. In the afternoon, additional presentations were given, which

incorporated practical examples for participants. This allowed interested

participants to become more familiar and hands-on with the products.

The application managers saved the icing on the cake

for the third and final day of the Advanced Food

Training. In addition to new amylopectin

products, alternatives for guar and gelatin

were presented as part of the confectionery

division. In subsequent workshops, partici-

pants could try the product innovation

to be convinced of it in terms of taste.

At the end of this successful training, a

two-hour information exchange was held

about market information and its fields of

application. Furthermore, the organizer of the

Emsland Group received very positive feedback on this year’s

Advanced Food Training 2013.

Advanced Food Training in Emlichheim

O

The products for retail and food service will

be marketed for the group under the well-

known name “Mecklenburger Kartoffelveredlung

GmbH” from Hagenow. The team under

sales manager Jörg Elvers with key account

managers Jörg Jakob and Michael Greve will

still be available at the former address, offering

the accustomed standard of professionalism

for trade partners in Germany and Europe.

The most important guarantee for successful pro-

ducts in the future is the quality of the potato itself.

This raw foodstuff comes from the farmers in the

region around the plant. The previous potato sup-

pliers have exchanged their old supplier contracts

with Mecklenburger Kartoffelveredlung for com-

bined shares/trade rights in the Emsland Group,

are still strongly connected to the company, and

in the future will continue to deliver the gold from

the ground in Hagenow as contractual partners.

The best of this valuable harvest will be included

in the delicious potato products that have been

refined with great flair for more than 40 years and

have been developed to perfection. Besides the

private label business, which is the production of

private brands for the retail market and in which

the sales organization is the market leader

in Germany (according to own sources) and

serves important markets in Europe as well, a

further focus will be the expansion of the

“Mecklenburger Küche” brand. The brand is well-

known and has been popular with customers

for many years due to its consistent and authentic

flavor. To further expand the popularity and tie in

to the success of recent years, a new chapter in

branding will be opened. The brand will be accom-

panied in the future by the slogan “Where taste is

right at home!” This slogan underscores the thin-

king that a bit of home can be created no matter

where you are. Today’s customer is looking for

not only taste, but an emotional moment as well.

Doing something good for yourself and savoring

the moment are the main communication points

going forward for the “Mecklenburger Küche”

brand. The newly redesigned packaging, which

will visually convey the new brand philosophy,

is accompanied by a range of new products,

which have been developed jointly by the

employees in the product development depart-

ment in Emlichheim under Martina Herrmann

and the colleagues from Hagenow.

The first public presentation of the new brand

presence as well as the new products took place

at ANUGA, the world’s largest food trade show,

in Cologne. Every two years, almost 7,000 exhibi-

tors from around the globe travel there to present

their products. Contact persons and decision-

makers from both the German and international

retail sectors were guests at the Mecklenburger

Kartoffelveredlung booth during the trade fair

and experienced the premiere of the new taste

of the region. The ideas, the new design, and

the product innovations were positively received

by all. The implementation of the new concept

is planned for the first half of 2014. Twenty

products will be outfitted with the new look,

and new promotional items will be presented

to retailers.

An initial impression of the new design and

the new philosophy is already available online.

Visitors to www.entdecke-den-landgenuss.de

can get a glimpse into the future of the

“Mecklenburger Küche” brand. On the retail

side, the first products with the new design

will be available in stores at the start of 2014.

As of summer 2013, Mecklenburger Kartoffelveredlung

GmbH in Hagenow is 100% integrated into the Emsland

Group. This integration was the logical result of the close

and successful business relationship that has connected

both companies for many years. The production division in

Hagenow was renamed Emsland Food, Hagenow Plant on July

1st , 2013, and is now one of the group’s three locations

for food products. Distribution for the globally active

industry will be organized via the international distribution

network for the Emsland Group and managed from

Emlichheim.

s already announced in the latest

Emsland News, within the framework of the

strategic realignment of the Emsland Group,

the segments in the food research and

development department have been assigned

to the responsibilities of the employees.

The organization of the food research and

development team shall be managed by

Martina Herrmann (stand-in H. Lambers) in a

supervising capacity, so that all projects and

tasks in application technology shall be

coordinated both internally and externally.

The responsible application managers can

thereby focus on their own area.

As part of the segmentation, food recipes are

being developed for the entire Emsland Group.

Furthermore, data-sheets are being issued on

new products and new developments presented

to customers through the world in collaboration

with our agencies and intensively supported.

The segmentation has already achieved initial

successes here. For example, a variety of recipes

were developed, often in close collaboration with

potential customers, and sometimes also even

prepared for market launch.

As part of the development of new products,

the research and development department, the

food product manager, the respective innovation

group as well as sales management will cooperate

closely within the Emsland Group. For example,

new products are being developed based on

various starches, potato flakes and granules,

proteins, fibres as well as mixed products for

industry and also for food retailing with regards

to Mecklenburger Kartoffelveredlung in line with

the newly-aligned strategy.

In addition to providing customers with profes-

sional advice on application technology issues

as well as supporting students, interns and

trainees in practical work and (specialist)

academic papers, work is being concentrated

on project planning and implementation.

Application technological requests can directly

answer by the application managers or rather

Ms. Herrmann. Continuous consultation between

the department manager and the respective

segment supervisors takes place at regular food

meetings.

A

Under a clear sky, roughly 250 agriculturists

gathered at the Neuerostraße facility entrance

around 9 o’clock in the morning. On the

company’s grounds, the guests – consisting

mostly of Emsland Group shareholders – had

the opportunity to survey a good portion of the

newly constructed facility. In addition to the new-

ly built facility entrance, the visitors surveyed

the sampletaker and the weighing station with its

entrance and exiting scales No. 3 and 4.

Sandwiches and both warm and cold drinks were

then served in an elaborately set-up tent, before

Mr. Eilting, managing director of Emsland Group,

officially welcomed the guests. He praised the

great interest shown by the visitors and provided

them with some background info on the new fa-

cility entrance. Mr. Schonert, managing director

of Emsland Group, also talked about the logic and

purpose of the new entrance, the construction of

which is based on the advantages of fulfilling

highly qualified food industry standards. In addi-

tion, Mr. Schonert went into further detail about

current market developments as well as the fu-

ture orientation of the Emsland Group. One of

the goals has to do specifically with the field of

dehydrates, in which the company is striving to

double the current amounts. The most important

aspect of it all is and shall remain the raw material

suppliers.

After Mr. Wesselink, the director purchasing raw

material, discussed the campaign’s current situa-

tion in more detail and Mr. Bergmann of Endeco

Company explained the features of the facility

and the facility entrance itself, the visitors were

taken on a tour. Divided into four groups, the

first group began its tour by visiting the samp-

ling process. A special feature of the sampler,

which is equipped with complex EDP systems, is

the possibility to conduct both weighing and sam-

pling measures while sampling on both scales.

The second group was informed about the need

for transponders and reflectors on their delivery

vehicles. To demonstrate this, the Emsland Group

team had prepared a sample delivery vehicle

equipped with the respective transponders and

reflectors. While the third group was busy visiting

the tarehouse and the vehicle weighbridge, the

remaining participants were in the tent being set

up with a myriad of transponders and reflectors.

The event, which was the first of four events in

two days, came to a conclusion with plenty of

cake and coffee to keep the visitors up to strength.

In total, approximately 1,000 agriculturists and

shareholders attended the two-day event and

were able to get a thorough idea about how their

raw materials will be delivered in the future.

Information seminar in honor of the new plant entrance

n Thursday and Friday, the 15th and

16th of August 2013, an information seminar

held by the Emsland Group took place right at

the new facility entrance to the head offices

in Emlichheim.

O

msland Group started preparations for a new Food Innovation

Centerin Germany. From our head office in Emlichheim we will provide

our customers state-of-the-art facilities where they can collaborate

with skilled food technologists, materials scientists, experts in rheology

and trained staff to develop ways to improve their products.

Potato, Pea, PerfectionOur history is in Germany and our roots connected to potatoes. About

10 yearsago we added peas as second raw material and closed the gap

between successive potato production campaigns.

Starch, Flakes, GranulesStarting from starches we widened our scope and added flakes and granules

to our product portfolio. Based on these ingredients we continuously

strengthened our position as the leading global supplier of ingredients for

potato based snack-pellets and snacks. We now have a strong base from

which we will further innovate with fibers, proteins, Empure® clean label

starches and Embalance® our new generation dehydrated potato - and

pea products.

he Emsland Group always endeavors to add

motivated and professional employees to its

existing team. In this edition we would like to

present to you two new colleagues from the

fields of research and development food as

well as occupational safety.

The Emsland Group’s innovation team in the

field of foodstuffs is reinforced by Jakob Woltjes.

Jakob gained his initial experience in the field

of starches back in 1978 when he supervised

research and development for the segments

of snacks, dairy products and pasta for a Dutch

starch producer. During his career as an appli-

cations specialist and later as a market

development manager for the segments of

snacks, dairy products and confectionery he

gained comprehensive experience in product

development, market launches and uses for

new starches. He contributed to the shaping

of trends such as gelatin substitutes. After a

brief foray into the field of adhesives he

returned to his roots to work as a senior product

developer in the field of confectionery. As of

the start of 2013, Jakob Woltjes, as he puts it

himself, has been back in the field he enjoys

the most: starches combined with foodstuffs.

With the Emsland Group.

Katrin Neumann will be operating in the Emsland

Group team as a safety engineer. Over the last few

years she has been responsible for 21 branches

as a central safety engineer/ QM-representative.

Here her work predominantly involved setting up

and maintaining the occupational safety system,

conducting industrial safety committee mee-

tings, in-house training, issuing risk assessments,

maintaining the hazardous substance register as

well as operating and work instructions. She was

also involved in organizing occupational medical

check-ups, accident prevention and preparing and

guiding external audits. To her, the topic of occu-

pational safety primarily concerns the people who

work at the Emsland Group. The core task of her

work will be to plan and implement processes and

to monitor these processes in order to ultimately

answer the question “Who does what, when, how

and by what means and how can we improve the

process?”

However, she says, it is also clear that in order to

improve occupational safety, this is a question WE

must all ask ourselves.

We hope that other colleagues also arriving on

the team this year as well as Ms. Neumann and

Mr. Woltjes can successfully support the Emsland

Group and feel at home in their new environment.

We look forward to successful teamwork!

he companies Jäckering Mühlen- und Nährmittelwerke GmbH and

Solam GmbH with effect from 1 August 2013 started a cooperation in the

domains development, production and sales & distribution of modified wheat

starch mixtures for the paper industry. Solam GmbH will be supplied with

25,000 t/a native wheat starch by Jäckering in future.

The company Jäckering Mühlen- und Nährmittelwerke GmbH is a globally

active enterprise with core competences in the following sectors: production

of wheat starch and wheat gluten as well as mechanical engineering. The

company Solam GmbH is a joint venture of the companies Emsland Group,

Emlichheim and Lyckeby, Kristianstad/Sweden.

The new partners were focusing on serving the paper industry with

modified wheat starches in various degrees of cationisation and blends.

These products have a wide variety within paper and packaging applications.

The Solam GmbH aimed to offer starch users a wide range of products.

The partnership commenced in August 2013 and should expand and make

the portfolio more flexible for both companies’ benefit.

as presentations, interesting articles, newsletters,

key account reports, product information and

product selectors. Besides the members of

the portal can have discussions within the

building specialist forum on many building

related topics. Today the portal is used only by

the people who attended the expert training.

Of course anybody who wants to contribute to

the business success of the building applications

is welcome to join.

Mr. TT Lim played an important role in this

initiative. Without his support and enthusiasm,

the portal would never have been realised.

Sales and marketing portal for building applications

here is always a lot going on at the Emsland Group. In order to provide

the best possible service as well as the best products to our customers,

both our employees and our internal structures must adapt to changing

conditions as best they can. For example, in order to be able to process

internal and external inquiries with regard to product documents and

questionnaires even faster and in a more targeted manner, we set up a

product document department at the beginning of 2013.

The product document department is primarily responsible for the mainte-

nance and management of existing product documentation and for creating

new product documentation (except for product data sheets).

The product document department operates centrally, serving all factories

belonging to the Emsland Group as well as all areas of application.

Mr. Mirco Wiedenhöfft will manage this new department in future.

Mr. Wiedenhöfft is a graduate engineer who joined the Emsland Group

team in January 2013. Chemistry laboratory assistants Mr. Marcel Biehl and

Ms. Melanie Thys are also available as contacts within the department.

There have also been developments in other group departments. For instance,

Mr. Jan Berg from the Technical Specialties research and development team

has successfully completed his master’s exam for industrial technicians in

the field of chemistry and is now a certified Master of Industrial Chemistry in

the Chamber of Industry and Commerce.

In addition, Ms. Heidrun Lambers and Ms. Daniela Bongartz have completed

a correspondence course in project management; in their new capacity as

state-certified project managers they are ensuring the success of all research

and development tasks that need to be undertaken with regard to food.

One of the reasons why the Emsland Group is among the best in its field is

our courage to change and our constant desire to bring about improvements.

In addition to the developments within

the Emsland Group, our external commu-

nications still remains strong in which it

plays a big part in probably the most im-

portant trade fairs in the food ingredients

industry. Therefore, the Emsland Group

is represented in both this year’s Food

Ingredients in Europe and Asia.

Food Ingredients Asia ran from 11th – 13th Sep-

tember 2013 in Bangkok. The growing interest for

high-quality food ingredients in the Asian market

has led to the fairs’ continual growth. Hundreds

of exhibitors from all over the world were able

to present new and innovative products at the

fair. The Emsland Group was of course present

as Germany’s largest potato starch producer. This

year’s focus was starch products used in snacks,

noodles, backed goods and coatings, developed

especially for the Asian market. The fair provided

the perfect opportunity to establish important

relationships with existing and potential custo-

mers as well as with our local agencies.

This year’s Food Ingredients Europe, the most

important event in the industry worldwide, will

be held in Frankfurt. From 19th to 21st November

2013, approximately 26,000 trade visitors from

154 countries will be able to experience the

future of the food industry. The Emsland Group

has secured a leading position as an exhibitor.

The professional team will consist of application

specialists, sales managers and agencies but also

our management board who will offer expert

advice to numerous visitors.

This year the area of focus will be the snack seg-

ment. In recent years, the Emsland Group has been

able to establish itself as a leading global provider

of potato-based snack pellets.

Additional highlights will be:

Embalance® physically treated, dehydrated

potatoes are low in sugar and asparagine

resulting in acrylamide reduction.

Empure® clean label starches and flakes allow

‘natural’ and ‘healthy lifestyle’ positioning of

snacks, soups, sauces and mashed potatoes.

Emcheese-Mor® casein-free “all-in-one”

blends for imitation - and processed

cheese allow manufacturers producing

vegan analogues, addition of vegetable

oils, maintain production capacity at high

level during periods of decreased milk

supply and cost reduction.

The Emsland Group’s booth will be E21 in Hall 8

sovisitors can come and enjoy the many

features such as a Meet & Eat Point, TV and

PowerPoint presentations as well as a touch

screen, which is certain to catch the eye of

any visitor! Furthermore guests can make a

remaining memory of their visit via our

‚Say Cheese‘ photo lounge.

The Emsland Group is pleased to welcome poten-

tial and existing customers as well as interested

parties at this year’s Food Ingredients Europe

trade fair!

he market for food innovation is growing rapidly. Thus, making it one of the most dynamic and interesting markets of the world today. Growing

populations in emerging countries as well as lifestyle changes in industrialized countries are increasing the demand for innovative products and

solutions in the food industry. The Emsland Group doesn’t just follow this trend; they actively incorporate it into their concept. In recent years, our

group of companies has been focusing more and more on food producers. So much so, that two innovation centers are currently being built for this

purpose. One of which is to be erected at the main plant in Emlichheim, and another is currently being expanded in the million-strong metropolis

of Bangkok.

Successful presentation by the Emsland Group at the Sewage Sludge Conference in Fulda

After three years of intensive preparation,

Labor Day was fittingly celebrated with the live

start of the ERP implementation. Thus, on May

1st, 2013, the Emlichheim plant was converted

to the new ERP system. An eagerly awaited

major step has been taken within a large

project. Since the begining of the year, the

project team has been working under high

pressure in order to enable Go-Live. But also

during the preliminary stages there had al-

ready been extensive analysis of all processes

within the individual plants, extensive training

of user groups, preparation of all master data,

intensive cooperat on with the system pro-

vider and our consultants, to name but a few.

This meant that a tremendous amount of

effort had to be put in from people of all

different sectors to achieve this result. The

rollout was launched in Emlichheim and two

months later in Wietzendorf, thanks, last but

not least, to a dedicated project team. That

the implementation of such a complex pro-

ject, which provides shared data access to all

business-relevant data of various business

units such as production, procurement, sales,

finance and accounting, human resources,

asset management, logistics as well as other

units of the company, would not run without

some glitches was foreseeable before the start.

At no point during the rollout, however, did

we seriously consider the idea of returning

to the old system. An already established and

strengthened team will initially focus on the

Emlichheim location, in order to guarantee a

full functioning ERP system, before expanding

and providing Go-Live to the Kyritz, Golßen

and Hagenow plants. Further improvements

will be made systematically. Coordination

with our management board will proceed at

14-day intervals. The stated goal is to achieve

comfortable and qualitatively sound system

utilization in Emlichheim, in order to then

launch and implement Go-Live in the re-

maining plants without any complications.

Only then can all the resources be used

efficiently for the operational processes, in

turn allowing the control of the business

processes to be optimized. The management

board would like to once again thank all ERP

team members for their extraordinary com-

mitment during the implementation of this

project, as well as the previous users for their

persevering despite all the setbacks.

Implementation of the ERP systems in the Emlichheim

und Wietzendorf plants

The 8th Sewage Sludge Conference took place

from June 4th – 6th, 2013 in Fulda, Germany.

More than 300 participants came to Fulda each

day to this important meeting for experts in the

field. They listened to lectures and visited the

professional exhibition to inform themselves

about the current state of the field and used the

opportunity to exchange ideas and knowledge

with colleagues and speakers. The Emsland Group

took advantage of this platform and opened a

booth at the exhibition for the first time.

The Emsland Group sees great potential in the

areas of flocculation, waste water treatment,

struvite precipitation and harbor sludge, even

beyond the effects of the changing regulations

for the use of polyacrylamides. Our starches could

prove to be an alternative to polyacrylamides.

Positive flocculation tests in the Hamburg harbor,

as well as alternative flocculations in the areas of

manure and biogas plants, indicate that there may

be interesting projects ahead.

We have already developed our first market-ready

product, Emfloc® KC 750, in our professional

research and development laboratories. Other

products are still in the trial phase and are

currently being intensively tested for their

suitability. A product portfolio of various starch

derivatives for use in environmental technology

will be available in the near future.

The 8th Sewage Sludge Conference in Fulda was

overall a successful experience for the Emsland

Group. All of the topics relevant to our enterprise

received very positive responses, we were able to

network extensively and reply to many inquires.

Our experts are available to answer your questions

about environmental technology even after the

conference:

The Asian market has long been one of

the most important key markets for the Emsland

Group. The Emsland Group’s innovative products

are used in many food applications and technical

specialties. Many customers have relied on sup-

port and quality from Emlichheim for many years.

The Emsland Group, with its well-established

business connections in Southeast Asia and

successful participation in trade fairs, has kept

up with market developments and is the world-

wide leader in applications for potato products.

In order to continue convincing our customers

of the many advantages of our work in the

region, the Emsland Group has opened an office

in the Technology Park Thailand in Bangkok, in

addition to its etablished office in Singapore.

Since mid-May 2013, this office is where the

newest scientific developments have been

connected with new developments for food ap-

plications from Emlichheim. The focus will be on

noodle products and snack applications.

In addition to the technical support from our

Head Office, three new employees will join

our team. They will be responsible for supporting

our local market partners, investigating new

possibilities, and optimizing existing products.

Ms. Patcharee Tirakom is responsible for marketing

and sales. Ms. Charinrat Kittiyanupong and

Ms. Waranit Pongjaruvat will provide technical

customer service. Mr. Omer Talha Korkmaz will

continue in his coordinating role as product

manager.

The Emsland Group is committed to strategic

development and excellent customer service.

Great opportunities!A big thanks goes out to all jubilarians and employees of the Emsland Group. Our common strength is what drives us forward - also in the upcoming

year 2014. We are motivated and excited about the chances and opportunities, that the next year bears for us.

ithin the framework of the nation-wide

“Girls’ Day”, the Emsland Group once again

became involved in the field of the training of

young people.

The Emsland Group offers young people a start

into working life and at the same time a per-

spective in a company which is operating inter-

nationally and oriented towards the future. The

Emsland Group also once again took part in this

year’s nationwide Gilds’ Day, in order to provide

young people with professional perspectives

and an opportunity to take a closer look at the

Emsland Group as a company as well as at the

skilled jobs available there. Apart from a lot of

information about the Group, the pupils were

able to see, on the occasion of the “Girls’ Day”,

with their own eyes at the Emlichheimer head-

quarter the different apprenticeship trades for

which training is provided at the Emsland Group,

such as, for instance, chemical laboratory as-

sistant, industrial clerk, specialist in computer

science, specialist in logistics, etc.

Staff-members of the Emsland Group showed

them around the different departments, explai-

ned the different production sequences and the

operations required for them. After an eventful

day, the “Girls’ Day” ended traditionally with a

joint meal at the new social building.

W

Detlef Schubert was honored

on the 19th of July for the 25

years of loyalty to the company.

We are exited about the future!
