A letter of Hazrat Khan Bahadur Ahsanullah (r) written on 1 February 1933

Khan Bahadur Ahsanullah, renowned academician, social reformer, reputed philanthropist, a famed literary figure and Sufi thinker from Bangladesh.

"I am very happy to see that there are quest for truth in your mind. In the present age the people generally avoid Allah, nobody wants to know and think about Him. The thought that do not offer money is considered as a meaningless thought. Many people have wealth, but how many people have happiness in mind and in heart. All are running after income, all are restless, busy for what? Nobody wants Allah - says, what to do with such a troublesome object. It only increases the restlessness of mind, interrupts earning money, burns human beings, increases the pain in the wounds." "Others cannot be satisfied if the self is not forgotten. To get the Great Lover one has to sacrifice himself (or herself - in Bangla on word refers both sex) in the love fire. As long as the sense of self and me is there, one cannot get the Great Friend. Who got Him, he gained eternity, he could overlook the maternal world, he could underemphasize the need for name, fame, desire, honour. If you want to get Him, devote yourself unto Him; spend day and night to know Him, take shelter of truth, avoid the false, bade farewell to pride, wash impurity and darkness with tears, offer the whole heart to the Great Lover. Keep yourself satisfied with less food, less talk, less sleep. Help others, do not hurt anybody, think other better (then you), learn from (those) who lost sense, share love with others, make all closer to you; then you will feel real joy." "Think solitary, look at the stars in mid-night sky and meditate about the mystery of the creation of the Creator. See, in one moment the door of your heart would be opened, the Great Thinker occupied the whole heart. Always try to be with ablution. Do not spoil ablution with evil thinking and evil works. Take care of sacredness all time." "As much the dearness with Him is developed, you would see spread of new blossoms and scents in your heart. Never be on the side of untruth, do not hurt the minds of people, feel humble always, keep pride away. Control the evil propensity, do not pray to show people, keep the mind sacred - not the body only." "Forget the scholarly pride, think the illiterate as scholar, never hurt the person you gave shelter, take special care of the poor, orphan, neighbor and relatives. Keep satisfied whatever you get. Control the tongue and remember Allah in each mouthful white eating, remember Him in each breath and surrender to Him." "As long as there are weeds, until the soil is soft, sowing would not yield. Burn all weeds one by one, uproot totally evil thoughts evil desire from mind, then lit love fire, then the land would be ready. Extensively till the land with plough of devotion, wet it spaying tear, then you will see the heart soften and the evils and untruth gone. Allah is the best teacher; He is everywhere and in the hearts of everybody. When one feels restless and eagerness for Him, He can be seen. Search for Him like a snake who lost the ruby, then His kindness will be available."
