Specially designed carbide tipped blades give one to two days of full productionbefore sharpening.

Designed, manufactured and assembled inSweden means excellent quality and a veryreliable sawmill.

The frame sawing technique gives a veryexact and accurate result. Signicantlybetter than with a professional circular

    sawmill.

*) Example of capacity: If the frame saw is equipped with 12 sawblades and you are going to produce 25 mm (1) thickboards from a 300 mm (12) wide cant, it is possible to place two cants, of which one is 100 mm (4) and the other 50 mm(2) high, on top of each other. This way you get the capacity to cut almost 1000 meter/hour (3300 linear feet) per hour.

The heart in the frame saw is the framewith up to twenty sawblades that are

pulled up and down with a balancedywheel as a counterweight. The frame, theywheel and the mechanical feeding workin perfect harmony, and this can be observedwhen it is sawing. The sound level is low andreminds of a pufng steam locomotive.

Timber cants are the raw materialMany small-scale sawyers who today use acircular sawmill, a band sawmill or a Logosol

Sawmill can reach industrial capacity with thehelp of the Logosol-Laks frame saw. The logsshould be sawn on two sides before they arefed into the Logosol-Laks frame saw so that thelumber is edged before it is cut into boards. This gives a controlled process and minimalhandling of the lumber. Without ado the cantsare turned into sawn products.

Pleasant on the working siteThe sawmill work site is neat and tidy. Whatlittle sawdust that comes from the thin blades,is transported away by a relatively small saw-dust extractor. An additional nozzle vacuums

the top side of the cant so that the boards be-come completely clean after they have been

    sawn.

The frame saw is seldom the bottleneckThe Logosol-Laks frame saw relentlessly worksaway, without interruption or trouble, hour af-ter hour. To keep it working, the sawn boardshave to be carried away, and a new cant has tobe sawn within only a few minutes. In practice, the Logosol-Laks frame saw is, despite the lowfeed rate, in almost every case the quickest on

    the working site.

The blades are replaced quicklyAfter 8-10 hours of operation, or after about100 logs, the tungsten-carbide toothed sawb-lades have to be removed from the frame andthen sharpened with the sharpening machinethat always comes with the Logosol Laks framesaw. The blades are mounted in xed positionsin a comb-shaped holder. This is an excellent

system, which makes replacing blades a quickoperation and ensures that the blades alwayscome in exactly correct position. The entireprocedure takes less than 20 minutes.

Economical all over the worldAll Logosol-Laks are powered by an 11 kW (15

hp) electric three-phase motor. The model 330can also manage on 7.5 kW (10 hp). If you donot have access to electricity, all the models canbe run by a 17 kW (23 hp), environmentallyfriendly combustion engine. Here we havemaybe the worlds highest capacity per usedenergy mass; around 500 meters/litre (6300linear feet/gallon) of fuel or, with electricity,100 meters/kWh (328 linear feet/kWh). Thatthis is environmentally friendly is obvious. In

addition, it does not require any extraordinaryinstallations or fuses. For some people this isjust a matter of saving money, but in manyplaces around the world it is a prerequisite.

Invest in a protable frame sawOverall, this is a good investment both in theshort and the long run. The Logosol-Laks framesaw is cheap to install and high producing fromthe rst moment. Due to its sturdy design and

smooth operation, it does not offer many sur-prises. The Logosol-Laks frame saw will workreliably and keep its value for decades. It alwaysfeels safe with well-tried technology.

The efciency and the operational reliability of Logosol Laks frame saw make it belong in a class by itself. For years the frame saw has become more and more improved, not by adding more technology and more smart func-tions, but by making small adjustments of the frame angle, the ywheel and the mechanical feeding. This hasrather led to the machine becoming more genuine.

Small Sawmills and FairTrade Save the WorldWhat is really needed is two things: a morefair trade in forest products and system solu-tions that enable a more efcient further rene-ment of the forest products, says Klas Bengts-son, CEO at the consultancy SSC Forestry, which works with sustainable forestry all overthe world.

Many of the projects show that small-scaletechnology can contribute to the solution forthe three major global issues: poverty, the cli-mate threat, and the threat to the worlds for-ests.

Usually, planting climate forests as a re-sponse to the climate threat doesnt lead to thedesired result, even though the original inten-

tion was good. Especially if it is done in theform of fast-growing monocultures with un-certain ecological, social and economic value, says Klas Bengtsson.

Swedish technical solutionThe vision is to build protable and fair pro-duction systems from the small-scale forestryin the south to the market in the north. A cru-cial key to success is that there is small-scaletechnology that can deliver high quality to lowinvestment costs.

Here, the Swedish frame saw Logosol-Lakshas made a great contribution, Klas Bengts-son states.

An interesting example can be taken fromTanzania. The problem was a large pine forestthat had been planted without any thought ofthe future. The plantation was in a miserablecondition, but just as the owners were think-ing of burning it down, SSC Forestry camewith a proposal.

Environmental certication according toFSCThe rst step was to get the entire forest hold-ing environmentally certicated in accordancewith the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).Export customers for construction timber werefound, and a production line was built up.

Today, a lot of money is invested in afforestation that will compensate for emissions of carbon dioxide. But oftethe future is forgotten. How is the forest to be taken care of, how will the actions be nanced, and how should allthese trees be used in the future?

The quality of the end product has to bevery high. In this case we were competing withSwedish and Finnish sawmills, and we de-nitely didnt want to be a budget alternative,Klas Bengtsson explains.

Two frame saws quickly became eight framesaws of the make Logosol-Laks and a second-hand band sawmill from South Africa to makethe cants. The industrial band sawmill withdouble saw blades has to be run in multipleshifts to supply the Swedish frame saws withtimber.

    Competitive technology

The frame saws were installed side by side shar-ing the same roller conveyor system. The ad-vantage of this was that the logs could easilybe moved between the saw units, and that onemalfunctioning machine could not stop the en-tire production. The plant was an immediatesuccess. The entire investment paid off in eightmonths. With a yearly production of 25 000cubic metres the sawmill quickly became one ofthe most protable in Eastern Africa.

Nowadays, SSC Forestry runs similar butsmaller projects, one of them in Chile. Onceagain it is the Logosol-Laks that is at the centreof the project.

We havent found another solution thatgives the same quality to the same low invest-ment and operation costs per produced cubicmetre, Klas Bengtsson states.

Give trees a valueEfcient small-scale industrial technology is aprerequisite for a sound development, but italso takes structural changes. In Klas Bengts-sons future aid projects will not be necessaryfor getting trees to be planted and taken care ofin Africa. The trees will be planted and proc-essed by the farmers themselves since they havebeen given what is required to run a protable

forestry business.Certication is an important key to achievethis. Today, there is a great interest in FairTrade Wood products from small-scale produc-ers. Due to this, the export market can be de-veloped into a signicant complement to thelocal market, where the prices the small-scaleproducers can set on their products often arevery low.

We have to build efcient and fair systems

where trees have a value for those who livethere. Then the small-scale farmers will wantto plant, take care of and develop their own for-est, says Klas Bengtsson.

My customers are bothbuilders and private buyers. They want theright type of timber and are not content

with what the DIY stores offer, says An-ders Assarsson.

SVENSHULT, SWEDENA new saw house is built at Svenshults Sawmill, and in there a circular sawmill of the largestmodel is getting installed. The circular sawmillwill automatically feed the Logosol-LAKS framesaw with cants. Some of the timber goesdirectly to the planer/moulder.

I have used the frame saw and it works incred-ibly well. The capacity of this frame saw isimpressive. In addition, it gives a very ne

    sawn surface.

NORWAYOlav Sve has built an efcient production lineand believes in a future as a small-scale woodprocessor. He bought his rst planer/moulder in2004. He already had a sawmill in his business. .
