Calgarians produced 199,000 tonnes of waste in 2011, 28% of which was recyclable material
Children are unaware of local environmental issues and how they contribute to them
Partnered with a local fine arts school to teach 120 grade 6 students about upcyling and entrepreneurship
Created and sold upcycled products
Taught students how to tackle environmental and social issues through entrepreneurship
Kids selected a local charity to give the proceeds to and chose Brown Bagging for Calgary’s Kids Society
Quality of Life
Students increased their confidence in business skills and realized their full entrepreneurial potential
Inspired others to make lasting environmental changes and diverted 1,600 items from the landfill
Standard of Living
Through Brown Bagging for Calgary’s Kids Society, students provided lunches to 1,350 other students in need
Established 4 student businesses that continued beyond the project
Sustainability
Lasting partnership with Willow Park School with ReCreate confirmed as a program for the next two years
Developed a spinoff program for grade 8 students called Hearts, Minds, Wallets
Fisher FarmsNeed Approach Empower
Small farms struggle to be successful and each year numerous farms fail
Farmers are often too busy working on their farms to fully develop their business
Worked with Fisher Farms to identify new revenue streams
Helped develop a sustainable action plan to reach new customers and explore additional streams of revenue
Equipped Fisher Farms with the business basics to bring stability to their farm

Built confidence in their business skills by teaching them fundamental strategies
Gave the family new hope for the future

Helped increase sales by connecting Fisher Farms with local restaurants
Launched a food box product as an alternate stream of revenue

Life in the sex trade brings extreme social challenges
Many women only have a grade 9 education and lack basic financial literacy and job skills
Taught goal setting, budgeting, banking, savings and credit
Developed job skills through resume writing and interview preparation
Gave 33 women the tools to successfully reintegrate back into society

Improved participants’ confidence and self-esteem

2 participants enrolled in post-secondary education as a result of the program and are working towards a brighter future

Developed a $6,000 scholarship fund to help women further their education
