JERRY T. ARCHER, 1925-1944

Sergeant Jerry T. Archer, U.S. Army was a graduated with the San Dieguito High School Class of 1940. He was killed in the South Pacific and is memorialized at the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines.

EMMETT L. BOOTH, 1927-1967

Gunnery Sergeant Emmett L. Booth served with Lima Company,3rd Battalion,1st

Marine Regiment,1st Marine Division. Emmett died as a result of a booby trap in Quang Nam, Vietnam.

ARCHIE M. BUCKLEY, 1906-1945

In 1943 at the age of 36, Archie volunteered for naval duty and was assigned to the aircraft carrier, U.S.S. Saratoga. He was awarded both the Navy Cross and Bronze Star for his heroism and was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart.

RICHARD B. COZENS, 1922-1944

Richard graduated from San Dieguito High School in 1940. He attended Washington State for a couple of years and then joined the Army Air Corps. Richard was killed in a training incident.

EUNICE B. HOLCOMBE, 1919-1943

Chief Pharmacist’s Mate Eunice B. Holcombe while aboard the USS Little, in the vicinity of the Solomon Islands, September 5, 1942 and was later declared dead, on September 6, 1943. Eunice is memorialized at the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines.

WILLIAM A. LITTLE, -1944

Corporal William A. Little served with Co L, 3rdBn, 2ndMar, 2ndMarDiv, FMF, Marianas Islands. William died of wounds during the Battle of Saipan and is buried at the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines.

JESS L. LUX, 1986-1918

Private Jess L. Lux served with Co. L, 125TH Infantry Regiment in France. Jess was killed during the Second Battle of the Marne and is buried at the Oise-Aisne American Cemetery and Memorial Fere-en-Tardenois.

JAMES M. MITCHELL, JR., 1940-1965

James enlisted in the Marine Reserves 5 March 1961 and went into active duty during the Vietnam War. Served with 2nd Platoon of Delta Company,1st Battalion,4th Marine Regiment,3rd Marine Division. James was killed by a mine on Ky Hoa Island, Vietnam. He is buried at Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery.

DONALD R. PETRIE, 1949-1944

33rd Bomber Squadron, 22nd Bomber Group, Heavy. MIA crashed into the sea near Innisfail, north Queensland on 28 February 1944 on a flight from Charters Towers to Nadzab. He is memorialized at the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines.

Hospitalman Jack E. Vaughan was a U.S. Navy medic serving with Company E, 1st Medical Battalion, 1st Marine Division. He was Killed in Action while tending his wounded comrades on by a missile wound to his back.

REX A. STEFFEN, 1919-1945

On 20 March 1945, the U.S. Navy destroyer USS Halsey Powell (DD-686) was alongside the aircraft carrier USS Hancock (CV-19) when Japanese aircraft attacked. As the destroyer was getting clear, an aircraft overshot the carrier and crashed on Halsey Powell. Her steering gear jammed, but alert action with the engines averted a collision. Fires were put out. Rex was one of 9 crewmembers killed were killed while over 30 others were wounded in the attack.

PFC Melvin A. Johnson, Jr. served with the 776 Field Artillery Battalion in WORLD WAR II and was killed at the Battle of the Bulge.

THOMAS H. COZENS, 1917-1942

Thomas grew up in Encinitas and entered San Diego State in 1936. He played guard on the football team, was on the varsity track team, was homecoming chairman in 1941, and a member of Omega Xi fraternity. He worked part-time in his father’s construction company and was a lifeguard at Moonlight Beach. On 12 September 1942, while in the Army Air Corps flight training program, he and his instructor pilot were killed in an accident near Arabella, New Mexico while on a weather observation mission. It was reported that in trying to avoid a storm front their Cessna AT-17 executed a sharp, perilous turn through a rain cloud that sent the plane into a vertical dive, crashing it nose first. Tom and his younger brother, Richard, also killed in an aerial training accident, are buried in Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery.

GLEN A. DOHERTY 1970-2012

Glen was a highly decorated SEAL, a warrior and a medical corpsman: He was a nine-year veteran with combat experience in Iraq and Afghanistan. Glen took his passion for adventure and for taking care of others into CIA service as a protective officer beginning in 2005. He deployed fourteen times with CIA.

When the State Department’s mission facility in Benghazi was attacked on September 11, 2012, Glen was part of a CIA team that mobilized to try to rescue the staff there, including Ambassador Christopher Stevens. When the group discovered that the Ambassador was missing, it decided to deploy to the CIA base in Benghazi instead to help reinforce that position and evacuate mission staff.

When Glen’s team arrived, CIA officers in Benghazi had already taken up defensive positions, as the Base was under attack by small arms and machine gun fire as well as from rocket-propelled grenades and hand-thrown bombs.

On the morning of September 12, the CIA Base was subjected to repeated mortar fire. Learning that his friend, fellow CIA officer and fellow former SEAL Tyrone Woods, was manning a defensive position on the roof, Glen without hesitation went to help him. Defending the compound from the rooftop, Glen died alongside his friend when a mortar round landed near them. Glen Doherty was 42 years old.

Dozens of Glen’s surfer friends took some of his ashes on a “paddle out” and sprinkled them off Swami’s Beach in Encinitas, California; and then, as Glen wished, hundreds celebrated his life at a massive block party.
