TRANSCRIPT
Encourage greater use of Scots pine in highvalue markets as a basis for supporting forestry related businesses.
Project Aim
Project Objectives• Improve people's understanding of Scots pine's timber
properties and suitability to different uses• Encourage innovation and promote greater use of Scots pine
in construction• Develop new tools for forecasting forest production (in terms
of timber volume and quality) and pricing mechanisms that better reflect variations in timber quality
• Publish forestry guidance on growing good quality Scots pine
Improving people's understanding of Scots pine's timber properties
We are producing a detailed technical review of Scots pine, detailing its properties and suitability to different uses.
We have published the key findings of the review as web pages.
Demonstrating innovative uses of Scots Pine timber
We have commissioned a Scots pine post and beam building at Balblair Woods on the edge of Loch Fleet. It will serve as a bird hide and education facility for local schools.
Developing new tools for forecasting forest production
We have developed forest stand assessment software (PREHAS) that provides forest managers with a breakdown of harvestable timber with respect to volume and quality. Forecasts are generated using forest stand data collected from harvester processing machines.
Forestry guidance on growing good quality Scots Pine
We are publishing guidance on growing good quality Scots pine supported by a series of case studies from partner countries. We also organised a study tour to Norway looking at forest management & timber processing.
