DAVID’S DILEMMA

1 Samuel 30 tells us that David and his men

returned to Ziklag to find their homes burned

and their families taken captive. The

Amalekites were responsible (v.1-4). Facing

the tragedy of losing their homes and families,

David and his men “lifted up their voice and

wept, until they had no more power to weep”

(v.4). “David was greatly distressed because

the people spoke of stoning him, because the

soul of all the people was grieved” (v6).

“But David encouraged himself in the Lord his

God” (v.6)

Who encouraged David?

David encouraged David.

We all experience times in our lives when we

have the opportunity to be discouraged,

depressed, distressed.

Jesus tells us that “in the world ye shall have

tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have

overcome the world.” (John 16:33) “It is

impossible but that offences will come.”

(Luke 17:1)

8

Paul tells us “all that will live godly in Christ

Jesus shall suffer persecution.”

(2 Timothy 3:12)

The Bible lets us know that in this world there

will be inevitable struggles for those who

believe in Christ. We may be criticized,

misunderstood or hurt because of what we

believe and how we live. Opportunities will

arise to take offense or to be angry or depressed

or sad or bitter with life, with circumstances,

with other people or even with God.

We can learn from David’s experience. He was initially “greatly distressed,” but then he did what we should all do. He encouraged himself in the LORD his God.

The dictionary defines to encourage as “to

inspire with courage or hope; to spur on”. In

times of discouragement, we can spur ourselves

on with remembrance of God’s promises of His

love and care for us. One way to keep ourselves

inspired with hope and courage is by

acknowledging truths from God’s Word.

When we acknowledge something, we

recognize it as genuine or valid; we admit that

it is real or true.

9

FAITH COMES BY HEARING

Faith comes by hearing God’s Word. As we

acknowledge, out loud, truths from God’s

Word, faith comes.

Romans 10:17: “So then faith cometh by

hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”

Jeremiah 23:28: “... he that hath my word, let

him speak my word faithfully...”

Job 22:28: “Thou shalt also decree a thing,

and it shall be established unto thee: and the

light shall shine upon thy ways.”

Proverbs 18:21: “Death and life are in the

power of the tongue . . .”

Acknowledging, out loud, truths from God’s

Word, is one way we can overcome.

Revelation 12:11b “And they overcame him by

the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of

their testimony;”

10

11

THE WORD OF GOD

The Word of God is pure.

Psalm 12:6: “The words of the LORD are pure

words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth,

purified seven times.”

Psalm 119:140: “Thy word is very pure:

therefore thy servant loveth it.”

The Word of God is right.

Psalm 33:4: “For the word of the LORD is

right; and all his works are done in truth.”

The Word of God creates.

Psalm 33:6: “By the word of the LORD were

the heavens made; and all the host of them by

the breath of his mouth.”

The Word of God heals.

Psalm 107:20: “He sent his word, and healed

them, and delivered them from their

destructions.”

The Word of God is sweet.

Psalm 119:103: “How sweet are thy words

12

unto my taste! Yea, sweeter than honey to my

mouth!”

The Word of God is a lamp to my feet.

Psalm 119:105: “Thy word is a lamp unto my

feet, and a light unto my path.”

The Word of God is a light to my path.

Psalm 119:105: “Thy word is a lamp unto my

feet, and a light unto my path.

The Word of God is true.

Psalm 119:160: “Thy word is true from the

beginning: and every one of thy righteous

judgments endureth forever”

The Word Of God is health to my flesh.

Proverbs 4:20-23: “My son, attend to my

words; incline thine ear unto my sayings. Let

them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in

the midst of thine heart. For they are life unto

those that find them, and health to all their

flesh.”

The Word of God does not return void.

Isaiah 55:11: “So shall my word be that goeth

forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto

me void, but it shall accomplish that which I

13

please, and it shall prosper in the thing

whereto I sent it.”

The Word of God accomplishes what He

pleases.

Isaiah 55:11

The Word of God prospers in the thing

for which He sent it.

Isaiah 55:11

The Word of God is like fire.

Jeremiah 23:29: “Is not my word like as a

fire? Saith the LORD; and like a hammer that

breaketh the rock in pieces?”

The Word of God is like a hammer.

Jeremiah 23:29

The Word of God is eternal.

Isaiah 40:8: “The grass withereth, the flower

fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand

forever.”

The Word of God is spirit and is life.

John 6:63: “It is the spirit that quickeneth; the

flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak

unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.”

14

Quickeneth: to cause to live, make alive, give

life

The Word of God cleanses.

John 15:3: “Now ye are clean through the

word which I have spoken unto you.”

Ephesians 5:26: “That he might sanctify and

cleanse it with the washing of water by the

word,”

The Word of God sanctifies.

John 17:17: “Sanctify them through thy truth:

thy word is truth.”

1 Timothy 4:4-5: “For every creature of God is

good, and nothing to be refused, if it be

received with thanksgiving: For it is sanctified

by the word of God and prayer.”

The Word of God builds me up.

Acts 20:32: “And now, brethren, I commend

you to God, and to the word of his grace,

which is able to build you up, and to give you

an inheritance among all them which are

sanctified.”

The Word of God is living and powerful.

Hebrews 4:12: “For the word of God is quick,

15

and powerful, and sharper than any two-

edged sword, piercing even to the dividing

asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints

and marrow, and is a discerner of the

thoughts and intents of the heart.”

The Word of God is sharp.

Hebrews 4:12

The Word of God pierces to the division

of soul and spirit and of the joints and

marrow.

Hebrews 4: 12

The Word of God is a discerner of the

thought and intents of the heart.

Hebrews 4:12

The Word of God is good

Hebrews 6:5: “And have tasted the good word

of God, and the powers of the world to come,”

The Word of God is like seed.

1 Peter 1:23: “Being born again, not of

corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the

word of God, which liveth and abideth

forever.”

16

Luke 8:11: “Now the parable is this: The seed

is the word of God.”

The Word of God is like a mirror.

James 1:22-25: “But be ye doers of the word,

and not hearers only, deceiving your own

selves.

For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a

doer, he is like unto a man beholding his

natural face in a glass:

For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way,

and straightway forgetteth what manner of

man he was.

But whoso looketh into the perfect law of

liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a

forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this

man shall be blessed in his deed.”

God’s angels hearken to the voice of His

word.

Psalm 103:20: “Bless the LORD, ye his angels,

that excel in strength, that do his

commandments, hearkening unto the voice of

his word.”

17

MY TONGUE, THE PEN OF A READY

WRITER

Psalm 45:1: “My heart is inditing a good

matter: I speak of the things which I have

made touching the king: my tongue is the pen

of a ready writer..”

Indite: To put down in writing; compose and

write

Proverbs 3:1-3: “ 1My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments: 2For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee. 3Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart:”

These verses state that the tongue is a pen and

the heart is a tablet. When I speak the Word of

God out loud, I am writing it on my own heart.

When I acknowledge a truth in God’s Word in

the first person I am boldly stating that I am

the one that it applies to.

Truths From God’s Word

ASKING

YIELD NOT TO TEMPTATION Horatio R. Palmer, 1868

Refrain

Ask the Savior to help you,

Comfort, strengthen and keep you;

He is willing to aid you,

He will carry you through.

22

I can ask and it shall be given to me; seek, and I shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to me.

Matthew 7:7-8: “Ask, and it shall be given

you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall

be opened unto you:

For every one that asketh receiveth; and he

that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh

it shall be opened.”

I am confident that God hears me when

I ask anything according to His will .

And if I know that He hears me,

whatsoever I ask, I know that I have the

petitions that I desired of Him”

1 John 5:14-15: “And this is the confidence that

we have in him, that, if we ask any thing

according to his will, he heareth us: and if we

know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we

know that we have the petitions that we

desired of him.”

All things whatsoever I ask in prayer,

believing, I shall receive.

Matthew 21:22: “And all things, whatsoever

ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall

receive.”

23

Whatsoever I shall ask in Jesus’ name, that will He do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

John 14:13: “And whatsoever ye shall ask in

my name, that will I do, that the Father may

be glorified in the Son.”

If I ask anything in Jesus’ name, He will

do it.

John 14:14: “If ye shall ask any thing in my

name, I will do it.”

If I abide in Jesus Christ, and His words

abide in me, I shall ask what I will, and it

shall done for me.

John 15:7: “If ye abide in me, and my words

abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it

shall be done unto you. “

The Father will give me whatsoever I ask

in Jesus’ name.

John 16:23: “. . . Whatsoever ye shall ask the

Father in my name, he will give it you.

I can ask and receive that my joy may be

full.

24

John 16:24b: “. . . ask, and ye shall receive,

that your joy may be full.”

God is able to do exceeding abundantly

above all that I ask or think, according to

the power that works in me.

Ephesians 3:20: “Now unto him that is able to

do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask

or think, according to the power that worketh

in us,”

25

BECAUSE CHRIST LIVES IN ME

CHRIST LIVETH IN ME Daniel W. Whittle, pub.1891

Once far from God and dead in sin,

No light my heart could see;

But in God’s Word the light I found,

Now Christ liveth in me.

Refrain:

Christ liveth in me,

Christ liveth in me,

Oh! What a salvation this,

That Christ liveth in me.

As rays of light from yonder sun,

The flow’rs of earth set free,

So life and light and love came forth

From Christ living in me.

As lives the flow’r within the seed,

As in the cone the tree,

So, praise the God of truth and grace,

His Spirit dwelleth in me.

26

With longing all my heart is filled,

That like Him I may be,

As on the wondrous thought I dwell

That Christ liveth in me.

27

I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I

live; yet not I but Christ lives in me: and

the life I now live in the flesh I live by the

faith of the Son of God, who loved me

and gave himself for me.

Galatians 2:20: “I am crucified with Christ:

nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth

in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh

I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved

me, and gave himself for me.”

Everyone dies because we come from

Adam, even so in Christ I am made alive.

1 Corinthians 15:22: “For as in Adam all die,

even so in Christ shall all be made alive.”

Christ is my life.

Colossians 3:4: “When Christ, who is our life,

shall appear, then shall ye also appear with

him in glory.”

I hear Jesus’ word. I believe on Jesus. I

have everlasting life. I am not

condemned for my sins. I have passed

from death into life.

28

John 5:24: “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He

that heareth my word, and believeth on him

that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall

not come into condemnation; but is passed

from death unto life.”

John 6:47: “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He

that believeth on me hath everlasting life.”

I live because Jesus Christ lives.

John 14:19: “Yet a little while, and the world

seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I

live, ye shall live also.

Christ’s life is the source of my light.

John 1:4: “In him was life; and the life was the

light of men.”

It is of the LORD’s mercies that I am not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is His faithfulness.

Lamentations 3: 22-23: “It is of the LORD's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. “

I am the salt of the earth.

Matthew 5:13: “Ye are the salt of the earth:

29

but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith

shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for

nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden

under foot of men.”

I am the light of the world.

Matthew 5:14: “Ye are the light of the world. A

city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.”

I have boldness and access to God with

confidence by faith in Christ.

Ephesians 3:12: “In whom we have boldness

and access with confidence by the faith of him.

Romans 5:2: “By whom also we have access

by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and

rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

Hebrews 4:16: “Let us therefore come boldly

unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain

mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.”

I am being changed into Christ’s image.

2 Corinthians 3:18: “But we all, with open face

beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord,

are changed into the same image from glory

to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord”

Philippians 1:6: “Being confident of this very

thing, that he which hath begun a good work

30

in you will perform it until the day of Jesus

Christ:”

According to the riches of God’s glory, I

am strengthened with might by his Spirit

in my inner man.

Ephesians 3:16: “That he would grant you,

according to the riches of his glory, to be

strengthened with might by his Spirit in the

inner man;”

Christ dwells in my heart by faith.

Ephesians 3:17a: “That Christ may dwell in

your hearts by faith;”

I am rooted and grounded in love.

Ephesians 3:17b: “That ye, being rooted and

grounded in love,

The love of God is shed abroad in my

heart by the Holy Spirit.

Romans 5:5: “. . . the love of God is shed

abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which

is given unto us.”

God is working in me both to will and to

do His good pleasure.

31

Philippians 2:13: “For it is God which worketh

in you both to will and to do of his good

pleasure.”

I can do all things through Christ who

strengthens me.

Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through

Christ which strengtheneth me.”

I let the word of Christ dwell in me richly

in all wisdom.

Colossians 3:16a: “Let the word of Christ dwell

in you richly in all wisdom:”

The Lord strengthens and fixes my heart

unblameable in holiness before God my

Father at the coming of my Lord Jesus

Christ.

1 Thessalonians 3:13: “To the end he may

stablish your hearts unblameable in holiness

before God, even our Father, at the coming of

our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints.”

Stablish: set fast; fix; to strengthen; make firm

The Lord is faithful. He strengthens me

and keeps me from evil.

32

2 Thessalonians 3:3: “But the Lord is faithful,

who shall stablish you, and keep you from

evil.”

The Holy Scriptures are able to make me

wise for salvation through faith in Christ

Jesus.

2 Timothy 3:15: “. . . thou hast known the holy

scriptures, which are able to make thee wise

unto salvation through faith which is in Christ

Jesus.”

I am a partaker of His divine nature.

2 Peter 1:4: “Whereby are given unto us

exceeding great and precious promises: that

by these ye might be partakers of the divine

nature, having escaped the corruption that is

in the world through lust.”

If I lack wisdom, I can ask God and He

liberally gives me wisdom and doesn’t

scold me for asking.

James 1:5: “If any of you lack wisdom, let him

ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally,

and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.”

Upbraid – scold

33

Jesus has been made unto me wisdom.

1 Corinthians 1:30: “But of him are ye in

Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us

wisdom and righteousness, and sanctification,

and redemption:"

All that I have comes from God. God is

good and the giver of all good things. He

daily loads me with benefits.

1 Chronicles 29:14: “ . . .For all things come of

thee, and of thine own have we given thee.”

James 1:17: “Every good gift and every perfect

gift is from above, and cometh down from the

Father of lights, with whom is no variableness,

neither shadow of turning. “

Psalm 68:19: “Blessed be the Lord, who daily

loadeth us with benefits, even the God of our

salvation.”

The LORD redeems my life from

destruction; He crowns me with

lovingkindness and tender mercies.

Psalm 103:4: “Who redeemeth thy life from

destruction; who crowneth thee with

lovingkindness and tender mercies;”

34

God has given me all things that pertain

to life and godliness. He supplies all my

needs according to His riches in glory by

Christ Jesus.

2 Peter 1:3: “According as his divine power

hath given unto us all things that pertain unto

life and godliness . . . “

Philippians 4:19: “But my God shall supply all

your need according to his riches in glory by

Christ Jesus.”

35

BECAUSE I AM IN CHRIST

ALL THINGS IN JESUS Harry Dixon Loes (1915)

Friends all around me are trying to find

What the heart yearns for, by sin undermined;

I have the secret, I know where 'tis found:

Only true pleasures in Jesus abound.

Refrain:

All that I want is in Jesus.

He satisfies, joy He supplies;

Life would be worthless without Him;

All things in Jesus I find.

36

Some carry burdens whose weight has for years

Crushed them with sorrow and blinded with

tears.

Yet One stands ready to help them just now,

If they will humbly in penitence bow.

No other name thrills the joy chords within,

And through none else is remission of sin.

He knows the pain of the heart sorely tried.

Both need and want will by Him be supplied.

Jesus is all this poor world needs today.

Blindly they strive, for sin darkens their way.

O to draw back the grim curtains of night,

One glimpse of Jesus and all will be bright

37

I am born again of incorruptible seed by

the Word of God, which liveth and

abideth forever.

1 Peter 1:23: “Being born again, not of

corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the

word of God, which liveth and abideth

forever.”

My sins are forgiven.

1 John 2:12: “I write unto you, little children,

because your sins are forgiven you for his

name's sake.”

God has removed my transgressions

from me as far as the east is from the

west.

Psalm 103:12: “As far as the east is from the

west, so far hath he removed our

transgressions from us.”

I am justified freely by God’s grace

through the redemption that is in Christ

Jesus:

Romans 3:24: “Being justified freely by his

grace through the redemption that is in Christ

Jesus:”

38

Justified - To declare free of blame; to declare

innocent or guiltless; “just as if I never sinned”

I am in Christ Jesus. I am not

condemned.

Romans 8:1: “There is therefore now no

condemnation to them which are in Christ

Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after

the Spirit.”

I believe on Jesus. If I continue in His

word, the truth I know shall make me

free.

John 8:31-32: “Then said Jesus to those Jews

which believed on him, If ye continue in my

word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye

shall know the truth, and the truth shall make

you free.”

The law of the Spirit of life in Christ

Jesus has made me free from the law of

sin and death.

Romans 8:2: “For the law of the Spirit of life

in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the

law of sin and death.”

In all things I am more than a conqueror

through Christ who loved me.

39

Romans 8:37: “Nay, in all these things we are

more than conquerors through him that loved

us.”

Nothing shall be able to separate me

from the love of God, which is in Christ

Jesus my Lord.

Romans 8:38-39: “For I am persuaded, that

neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor

principalities, nor powers, nor things present,

nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor

any other creature, shall be able to separate us

from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus

our Lord.”

God establishes me in Christ and has

anointed me.

2 Corinthians 1:21: “Now he which stablisheth

us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is

God;”

My body is the temple of the Holy Spirit.

1 Corinthians 6:19: “What? know ye not that

your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost

which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye

are not your own?”

I always triumph in Christ.

40

2 Corinthians 2:14: “Now thanks be unto God,

which always causeth us to triumph in Christ,

and maketh manifest the savour of his

knowledge by us in every place.”

I am a new creation in Christ; my dead,

sinful spirit is passed away; my spirit is

all new.

2 Corinthians 5:17: “Therefore if any man be

in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are

passed away; behold, all things are become

new.”

I am reconciled to God by Christ Jesus.

2 Corinthians 5:18: “And all things are of God,

who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus

Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of

reconciliation;”

God was in Christ, reconciling me to

Himself, no longer counting my sins

(trespasses) against me; and has

committed to me the word of

reconciliation.

2 Corinthians 5:19: “To wit, that God was in

Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not

imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath

committed unto us the word of reconciliation.”

41

I am the righteousness of God in Christ.

2 Corinthians 5:21: “For he hath made him to

be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might

be made the righteousness of God in him.”

I am blessed with faithful Abraham.

Galatians 3:9: “So then they which be of faith

are blessed with faithful Abraham.”

Deuteronomy 28:1-14: “And it shall come to

pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the

voice of the LORD thy God, to observe and to

do all his commandments which I command

thee this day, that the LORD thy God will set

thee on high above all nations of the earth:

And all these blessings shall come on thee, and

overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the

voice of the LORD thy God.

Blessed shalt thou be in the city, and blessed

shalt thou be in the field.

Blessed shall be the fruit of thy body, and the

fruit of thy ground, and the fruit of thy cattle,

the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy

sheep.

Blessed shall be thy basket and thy store.

Blessed shalt thou be when thou comest in, and

42

blessed shalt thou be when thou goest out.

The LORD shall cause thine enemies that rise

up against thee to be smitten before thy face:

they shall come out against thee one way, and

flee before thee seven ways.

The LORD shall command the blessing upon

thee in thy storehouses, and in all that thou

settest thine hand unto; and he shall bless thee

in the land which the LORD thy God giveth

thee.

The LORD shall establish thee an holy people

unto himself, as he hath sworn unto thee, if

thou shalt keep the commandments of the

LORD thy God, and walk in his ways.

And all people of the earth shall see that thou

art called by the name of the LORD; and they

shall be afraid of thee.

And the LORD shall make thee plenteous in

goods, in the fruit of thy body, and in the fruit

of thy cattle, and in the fruit of thy ground, in

the land which the LORD sware unto thy

fathers to give thee.

The LORD shall open unto thee his good

treasure, the heaven to give the rain unto thy

land in his season, and to bless all the work of

thine hand: and thou shalt lend unto many

43

nations, and thou shalt not borrow.

And the LORD shall make thee the head, and

not the tail; and thou shalt be above only, and

thou shalt not be beneath; if that thou hearken

unto the commandments of the LORD thy God,

which I command thee this day, to observe

and to do them:

And thou shalt not go aside from any of the

words which I command thee this day, to the

right hand, or to the left, to go after other gods

to serve them.

Christ redeemed me from the curse of

the law.

Galatians 3:13: “Christ hath redeemed us from

the curse of the law, being made a curse for

us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that

hangeth on a tree:”

I am a child of God by faith in Christ

Jesus.

Galatians 3:26: “For ye are all the children of

God by faith in Christ Jesus.”

God has blessed me with all spiritual

blessings in heavenly places in Christ:

44

Ephesians 1:3: “Blessed be the God and Father

of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us

with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places

in Christ:”

God has chosen me in Christ before the

foundation of the world, that I should be

holy and without blame before Him in

love.

Ephesians 1:4: “According as he hath chosen

us in him before the foundation of the world,

that we should be holy and without blame

before him in love:”

I am accepted in the beloved.

Ephesians 1:6: “To the praise of the glory of

his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted

in the beloved.”

I am sealed with the Holy Spirit of

promise.

Ephesians 1:13: “In whom ye also trusted,

after that ye heard the word of truth, the

gospel of your salvation: in whom also after

that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy

Spirit of promise,”

45

But God, who is rich in mercy, because

of His great love with which He loved

me, even when I was dead in trespasses,

made me alive together with Christ (by

grace I have been saved),

Ephesians 2:4-5: “But God, who is rich in

mercy, because of His great love with which

He loved us, even when we were dead in

trespasses, made us alive together with Christ

(by grace you have been saved), “

God raised me up together, and made

me sit together in the heavenly places in

Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He

might show the exceeding riches of His

grace in His kindness toward me in

Christ Jesus.

Ephesians 2:6-7: “And raised us up together,

and made us sit together in the heavenly

places in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come

He might show the exceeding riches of His

grace in His kindness toward us in Christ

Jesus.”

I am God’s workmanship, created in

Christ Jesus for good works

46

Ephesians 2:10: “For we are his

workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto

good works, which God hath before ordained

that we should walk in them.”

But now in Christ, I who was once far

from God, have been made near by the

blood of Christ.

Ephesians 2:13: “But now in Christ Jesus ye

who sometimes were far off are made nigh by

the blood of Christ.”

I have the mind of Christ.

1 Corinthians 2:16: “For who hath known the

mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him?

but we have the mind of Christ.”

Philippians 2:5: “Let this mind be in you,

which was also in Christ Jesus:”

I press toward the mark for the prize of

the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 3:14: “I press toward the mark for

the prize of the high calling of God in Christ

Jesus.”

I am qualified to share His inheritance.

47

Colossians 1:12: “Thanks unto the Father,

which hath made us meet to be partakers of

the inheritance of the saints in light:”

Partake: Share

I am rooted and built up in Christ and

made firm in the faith, abounding with

gratitude.

Colossians 2:7: “Rooted and built up in him,

and stablished in the faith, as ye have been

taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.”

Stablished: made firm

I am complete in Christ.

Colossians 2:10: “And ye are complete in him,

which is the head of all principality and

power:”

My life is hid with Christ in God.

Colossians 3:3: “For ye are dead, and your life

is hid with Christ in God.”

I have purpose. God saved me, and

called me with an holy calling, not

according to my works, but according to

His own purpose and grace, which was

given to me in Christ Jesus before the

world began.

48

2 Timothy 1:9: “Who hath saved us, and called

us with an holy calling, not according to our

works, but according to his own purpose and

grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus

before the world began,”

I am healed by the stripes of Jesus.

1 Peter 2:24: “Who his own self bare our sins

in his own body on the tree, that we, being

dead to sins, should live unto righteousness:

by whose stripes ye were healed.”

Isaiah 53:5: “But he was wounded for our

transgressions, he was bruised for our

iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was

upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.”

Greater is He that is in me than he that is

in the world.

1 John 4:4: “Ye are of God, little children, and

have overcome them: because greater is he

that is in you, than he that is in the world.”

I am born of God. I overcome the world.

The victory that overcomes the word is

my faith.

1 John 5:4: “For whatsoever is born of God

overcometh the world: and this is the victory

that overcometh the world, even our faith.”

BLOOD OF JESUS

PRECIOUS, PRECIOUS

BLOOD OF JESUS

By Miss F. R. Havergal (1836-1879)

Precious, precious blood of Jesus,

Shed on Calvary!

Shed for rebels, shed for sinners,

Shed for me.

Precious, precious blood of Jesus!

All the price is paid;

Perfect pardon now is offered,

Peace is made.

Precious, precious blood of Jesus,

Jesus, God's own Son!

Telling that the work is finished;

All is done.

Though thy sins are red like crimson,

Deep in scarlet glow,

Jesus' precious blood can make them

White as snow.

50

Precious blood, whose full atonement

Bringeth us to God!

Precious blood, our song and glory,

Praise and laud!

51

Life is in the blood.

Leviticus 17:11a: “For the life of the flesh is in

the blood:”

The Blood of Jesus is the Blood of the

new covenant that was shed for me.

Luke 22:20: “Likewise also the cup after

supper, saying, This cup is the new testament

in my blood, which is shed for you.”

The Blood of Jesus pays for my sins.

Matthew 26:28: “For this is my blood of the

new testament, which is shed for many for the

remission of sins.”

Remission - forgiveness or pardon, of sins

(letting them go as if they had never been

committed)

I have been forgiven of my sins as if they have

never been committed.

I have been bought with a price,

purchased with the precious Blood of

Jesus; therefore, I glorify God in my

body and spirit which are God’s.

Acts 20:28: “...feed the church of God, which

he hath purchased with his own blood.”

52

1 Corinthians 6:20, 7:23: “For ye are bought

with a price: therefore glorify God in your

body, and in your spirit, which are God's.”

The Blood of Jesus cleanses me from all

sin.

1 John 1:7: “But if we walk in the light, as he is

in the light, we have fellowship one with

another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son

cleanseth us from all sin.”

The blood washes away my sins.

Revelation 1:5: “And from Jesus Christ, who is

the faithful witness, and the first begotten of

the dead, and the prince of the kings of the

earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us

from our sins in his own blood.”

The Blood of Jesus justifies me before a

holy God and saves me from His wrath.

Romans 5:9: “Much more then, being now

justified by his blood, we shall be saved from

wrath through him.”

Justify - to render righteous; to free of the guilt

and penalty attached to grievous sin;

The Blood of Jesus redeems me.

53

Ephesians 1:7: “In whom we have redemption

through his blood, the forgiveness of sins,

according to the riches of his grace.”

Colossians 1:14: “In whom we have

redemption through his blood, even the

forgiveness of sins:”

Hebrews 9:12: “Neither by the blood of goats

and calves, but by his own blood he entered in

once into the holy place, having obtained

eternal redemption for us.”

I was not redeemed with corruptible

things, as silver and gold, but with the

precious blood of Christ.

1 Peter 1:18-20: “Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,”

The Blood of Jesus brought me, a

Gentile, into a relationship with God

that I could not have had before.

Ephesians 2:11-16: ” ... ye being in time past

54

Gentiles in the flesh ...without Christ, being

aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and

strangers from the covenants of promise,

having no hope, and without God in the

world: But now in Christ Jesus...are made

nigh by the blood of Christ. For he is our

peace, who hath made both one, and hath

broken down the middle wall of partition

between us; Having abolished in his flesh the

enmity, even the law of commandments

contained in ordinances; for to make in

himself of twain one new man, so making

peace; And that he might reconcile both unto

God in one body by the cross, having slain the

enmity thereby.”

The Blood of Jesus brought me peace.

Colossians 1:20: “And, having made peace

through the blood of his cross, by him to

reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say,

whether they be things in earth, or things in

heaven.”

The Blood of Jesus purges my

conscience from dead works to serve the

living God.

55

Hebrews 9:14: “How much more shall the

blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit

offered himself without spot to God, purge

your conscience from dead works to serve the

living God?”

My heart is sprinkled from an evil

conscience by the Blood of Jesus.

Hebrews 10:21-22: “And having an high priest over the house of God; let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.

The Blood of Jesus allows me to enter into the holiest place before the throne of God.

Hebrews 10:19: “Having therefore, brethren,

boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood

of Jesus.”

Through the Blood of the everlasting

covenant, God makes me perfect in

every good work to do His will, working

in me that which is pleasing in His sight

through Jesus Christ.

Hebrews 13:20-21: “Now the God of peace, that

brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus,

that great shepherd of the sheep, through the

56

blood of the everlasting covenant, make you

perfect in every good work to do his will,

working in you that which is well pleasing in

his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be

glory for ever and ever. Amen.”

Through the Blood of Jesus, I have been

delivered from the power of darkness

and have been translated into the

kingdom of his dear Son.

Colossians 1:13: “Who hath delivered us from

the power of darkness, and hath translated us

into the kingdom of his dear Son:”

I overcome the devil by the Blood of

Jesus and the Word of my testimony.

Revelation 12:11: “And they overcame him by

the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of

their testimony; and they loved not their lives

unto the death.”

FEAR NOT

FEAR NOT, O LITTLE FLOCK

Words: Attributed variously to King Gustavus Adolphus of

Sweden, Jacob Fabricius (1593-1654) or Johann M. Altenburg

(1584-1640); Translated from German to English by Cather-

ine Winkworth, Lyra Germanica, 1855.

Fear not, O little flock, the foe

Who madly seeks your overthrow;

Dread not his rage and power;

What though your courage sometimes faints?

His seeming triumph o'er God's saints

Lasts but a little hour.

Fear not, be strong! your cause belongs

To Him Who can avenge your wrongs;

Leave all to Him, your Lord;

Though hidden yet from mortal eyes,

Salvation shall for you arise;

He girdeth on His sword!

58

As true as God's own promise stands,

Not earth nor hell with all their bands

Against us shall prevail;

The Lord shall mock them from His throne;

God is with us; we are His own;

Our victory cannot fail!

Amen, Lord Jesus, grant our prayer!

Great Captain, now thine arm make bare;

Thy church with strength defend;

So shall thy saints and martyrs raise

A joyful chorus to Thy praise,

Through ages without end.

59

I will not fear or be discouraged, for the Lord goes before me. He will be with me; He will neither fail me nor forsake me.

Deuteronomy 31:8: “And the LORD, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed”

Even when I’m walking through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; His rod and staff comfort me.

Psalm 23:4: “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me .”

The LORD is my light and my salvation. The LORD is the strength of my life. Whom shall I fear?

Psalm 27:1: “The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?”

I sought the Lord, and He answered me; He delivered me from all my fears.

Psalm 34:4: “I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.”

60

I do not fear evil tidings; my heart is fixed, trusting in the Lord. My heart is established, I shall not be afraid while I wait to see my desire upon my enemies.

Psalm 112:7-8: “He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the LORD. His heart is established, he shall not be afraid, until he see his desire upon his enemies.”

The Lord is on my side; I will not fear.

Psalm 118:6: “The LORD is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me?”

Because I listen to the Lord, I shall live in safety and be quiet from fear of evil.

Proverbs 1:33: “But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.”

When I lie down, I shall not be afraid. I shall lie down, my sleep shall be sweet.

Proverbs 3:24: “When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.”

61

I shall fear not or be dismayed. For the Lord is with me. He will strengthen me and the Lord will help me. He will hold me up with His right hand of righteousness.

Isaiah 41:10: “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.”

The LORD, my God, will hold my right hand, saying to me, Fear not, I will help you.

Isaiah 41:13: “For I the LORD thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee.”

I will not fear the reproach of men or be afraid of their verbal abuse. For the moth shall eat them up like a garment; the worm shall devour them like wool. But God’s righteousness shall last forever, His salvation from generation to generation.

Isaiah 51:7-8: “Hearken unto me, ye that know righteousness, the people in whose heart is my law; fear ye not the reproach of men, neither be ye afraid of their revilings. For the moth shall eat them up like a garment, and the worm shall eat them like wool: but my

62

righteousness shall be forever, and my salvation from generation to generation.”

Revilings – verbal abuse

I will not fear, for I am greatly loved by God. I shall be at peace, and be strong!

Daniel 10:19: “And said, O man greatly beloved, fear not: peace be unto thee, be strong, yea, be strong. And when he had spoken unto me, I was strengthened, and said, Let my lord speak; for thou hast strengthened me.”

Jesus has given me His peace. I will not let my heart be troubled or afraid.

John 14:27: “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”

I have not received a spirit that makes me a slave to fear, but I have received the Spirit of adoption. And by Him, I cry, “Abba, Father!”

Romans 8:15: “For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.”

63

I will be anxious for nothing, but I will pray about everything, with thanksgiving. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard my heart and mind in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:6-7: “Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

God has not given me a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind.

2 Timothy 1:7: “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”

64

HOLY SPIRIT

LET THE HOLY SPIRIT GUIDE Edwin F. Parry (1850 - 1935)

Let the Holy Spirit's promptings Be your daily, constant guide; Let its peaceful, heav'nly power Ever in your heart abide. It will lead in duty's pathway, And will never let you stray; It will keep you from all danger, And from ev'ry evil way.

Let the Holy Spirit guard you In each act, and word and thought; Never make a single effort Till the Spirit's aid you've sought. Cherish it as your companion; Heed its sweet and still small voice; Ever listen to its dictates, Then through life you will rejoice.

Do not grieve the Holy Spirit, Or it will not with you stay; But that it may dwell within you

65

To your heav'nly Father pray. Ask in faith and He will answer, And will bless you from above; He will send His Holy Spirit, Which will fill your soul with love.

66

The Holy Spirit is my Teacher.

Luke 12:12: “For the Holy Ghost shall teach

you in the same hour what ye ought to say.”

The Holy Spirit will guide me into all

truth.

John 16:13: “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of

truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth:

for he shall not speak of himself; but

whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak:

and he will shew you things to come.”

The Holy Spirit will show me things to

come.

John 16:13

The Holy Spirit is my Comforter.

John 14:26: “But the Comforter, which is the

Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my

name, he shall teach you all things, and bring

all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I

have said unto you.”

I receive power from the Holy Spirit.

Acts 1:8: “But ye shall receive power, after

that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye

shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem,

and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto

67

the uttermost part of the earth.”

The Spirit of Him that raised up Jesus

from the dead dwells in me and gives life

to my mortal body.

Romans 8:11: “But if the Spirit of him that

raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he

that raised up Christ from the dead shall also

quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that

dwelleth in you.”

Quicken: to cause to live, make alive, give life

The Holy Spirit helps me in my

weakness.

Romans 8:26: “ Likewise the Spirit also

helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what

we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit

itself maketh intercession for us with

groanings which cannot be uttered.”

Infirmity – weakness

The Holy Spirit intercedes for me.

Romans 8:26

God reveals things to me by the Holy

Spirit.

68

1 Corinthians 2:10: “But God hath revealed

them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit

searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of

God.”

The Holy Spirit empowers me to have

victory over my flesh.

Romans 8:4, 13: “4That the righteousness of

the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not

after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 13For if ye

live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye

through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the

body, ye shall live.”

Galatians 5:16, 25: “16This I say then, Walk in

the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the

lust of the flesh. 25If we live in the Spirit, let us

also walk in the Spirit.”

69

PEACE

O THE PEACE FOR EVER

FLOWING

By A. P. Cecil (1841-1889)

O the peace forever flowing

From God's thoughts of His own Son,

O the peace of simply knowing,

On the cross that all was done.

Peace with God—for Christ in heaven

Object is of faith to me:

Peace with God—the Lord is risen,

Righteousness now counts me free.

Peace with God—for Christ's in glory;

God is just and God is love;

O how blessed is the story,

That we're brought to God above!

Jesus, Savior, we adore Thee,

Christ of God, anointed One!

We confess Thee Lord of glory,

Fruits of victory Thou hast won.

70

I will lay myself down in peace and

sleep, for you, Lord alone, make me live

in safety.

Psalms 4:8: “I will both lay me down in peace,

and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me

dwell in safety.”

I have great peace because I love God’s

law. Nothing causes me to stumble.

Psalms 119:165: “Great peace have they which

love thy law: and nothing shall offend them.”

The LORD will keep me in perfect peace,

because my mind is stayed on Him;

because I trust in Him.

Isaiah 26:3: “Thou wilt keep him in perfect

peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because

he trusteth in thee.”

The Lord who has mercy on me has

promised that even if the mountains

should depart, and the hills are removed

but His kindness shall not depart from

me neither shall His covenant of peace

be removed.

Isaiah 54:10: “For the mountains shall depart,

and the hills be removed; but my kindness

shall not depart from thee, neither shall the

71

covenant of my peace be removed, saith the

LORD that hath mercy on thee.”

The Lord is my Redeemer, the Holy One

of Israel: the Lord my God, who teaches

me to profit, who leads me by the way

that I should go. Because I have

hearkened to His commandments, I

have peace like a river, and

righteousness as the waves of the sea.

Isaiah 48:17, 18: “Thus saith the LORD, thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; I am the LORD thy God which teacheth thee to profit, which leadeth thee by the way that thou shouldest go. O that thou hadst hearkened to my commandments! Then had thy peace been as a river, and thy righteousness as the waves of the sea:”

The Lord brings us health and healing;

He reveals to us an abundance of peace

and truth.

Jeremiah 33:6: “Behold, I will bring it health

and cure, and I will cure them, and will reveal

unto them the abundance of peace and truth.”

72

Christ has left me His peace. His peace

He has given to me and not the peace

that the world gives. Therefore, I do not

let my heart be troubled, or let it be

afraid.

John 14:27: “Peace I leave with you, my peace

I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I

unto you. Let not your heart be troubled,

neither let it be afraid.”

73

STRENGTH

I WILL GO

IN THE STRENGTH OF THE LORD

Words: Edward Turney, 1864.

I will go in the strength of the Lord,

In the path He hath marked for my feet:

I will follow the light of His Word,

Nor shrink from the dangers I meet.

His presence my steps shall attend:

His fullness my wants shall supply;

On Him, till my journey shall end,

My hope shall securely rely.

I will go in the strength of the Lord,

To the work He appoints me to do:

In the joy which His smile shall afford

My soul shall her vigor renew.

His wisdom will guard me from harm,

His pow’r my sufficiency prove;

I will trust His omnipotent arm,

I will rest in His covenant love.

74

I will go in the strength of the Lord,

To each conflict which faith may require,

His grace, as my shield and reward,

My courage and zeal shall inspire.

If He issue the word of command

To meet and encounter the foe,

Though with sling and with stone in my hand,

In the strength of the Lord I will go.

75

The LORD is my strength and my song;

he is become my salvation.

Exodus 15:2a: “The LORD is my strength and

song, and he is become my salvation:”

God is my strength and power: and he

makes my way perfect.

2 Samuel 22:33: “God is my strength and

power: and he maketh my way perfect.”

God has girded me with strength to

battle.

2 Samuel 22:40a: “For thou hast girded me

with strength to battle: ...”

I will seek the LORD and His strength, I

will seek His face continually.

1 Chronicles 16:11: “Seek the LORD and his

strength, seek his face continually.”

The joy of the LORD is my strength.

Nehemiah 8:10b: “. . . for the joy of the LORD

is your strength.”

76

The LORD is my rock, and my fortress,

and my deliverer; my God, my strength,

in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the

horn of my salvation, and my high

tower.

Psalm 18:2: “The LORD is my rock, and my

fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my

strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler,

and the horn of my salvation, and my high

tower.”

It is God that girds me with strength,

and makes my way perfect.

Psalm 18:32: “It is God that girdeth me with

strength, and maketh my way perfect.”

Gird: encompass, equip, clothe

I wait on the LORD: I am of good

courage, and He strengthens my heart.

Psalm 27:14: “Wait on the LORD: be of good

courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart:

wait, I say, on the LORD.

The LORD is my strength and my shield;

my heart trusts in him, and I am helped:

77

Psalm 28:7: “The LORD is my strength and

my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am

helped...”

God is my refuge and strength, a very

present help in trouble.

Psalm 46:1: “God is our refuge and strength, a

very present help in trouble.”

In quietness and in confidence shall be

my strength.

Isaiah 30:15: “For thus saith the Lord GOD, the

Holy One of Israel; In returning and rest shall

ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence

shall be your strength: and ye would not.

God gives power to the faint; and to

them that have no might he increases

strength.

Isaiah 40:29: “He giveth power to the faint;

and to them that have no might he increaseth

strength.”

I wait upon the LORD and He renews my

strength; I mount up with wings as an

eagle; I run, and I am not weary; and I

walk, and not faint.

78

Isaiah 40:31: “But they that wait upon the

LORD shall renew their strength; they shall

mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run,

and not be weary; and they shall walk, and

not faint.”

God is my God: He strengthens me; He

helps me; He upholds me with the right

hand of His righteousness.

Isaiah 41:10: “. . . I am thy God: I will

strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I

will uphold thee with the right hand of my

righteousness.”

I am strong in the Lord, and in the

power of His might.

Ephesians 6:10: “Finally, my brethren, be

strong in the Lord, and in the power of his

might.”

I can do all things through Christ who

strengthens me.

Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through

Christ which strengtheneth me.”

79
