What does World Land Trust (WLT) do?50 years ago, conservation was focused on individual species such as the Giant Panda or Orangutan. However, the important factor is not a single species but a whole ecosystem. To save an ecosystem you need to save the land. World Land Trust works to protect some of the world’s most biodiverse and threatened habitats. By protecting whole ecosystems, they not only protect the mammals that everyone knows, but also the smallest insects and plants, many of which haven’t even been discovered.

Land Acquisition

WLT empowers local organisations to create nature reserves and restore degraded habitats. Once land is secured, individuals from local communities are employed as reserve rangers to protect these threatened habitats and the animals within them.

Tree Planting

Many forest species are unable to survive in forests that have been severely fragmented by human actions. By planting trees, WLT restores degraded habitat with the aim of reconnecting fragmented areas to ensure contiguous habitat for threatened species.

Carbon Balancing

WLT’s Carbon Balanced Programme utilises REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation) and offsets emissions through the protection and restoration of threatened tropical forest, preventing the release of stored carbon into the atmosphere that would otherwise contribute to climate change. This booklet has been Carbon Balanced to offset the environmental impact of its production.

Where are my trees being planted?

Your trees are planted by WLT’s partner, Reserva Ecológica de Guapiaçu (REGUA), a Brazilian non-profit non-governmental organisation. Their mission is to preserve the forests of the upper Guapiaçu river basin situated in the Atlantic Forest, one of the top five biodiversity hotspots on Earth1. Planting trees preserves the habitat for all species within: those recorded so far2 and many more as yet undiscovered.
