1. Introduction
SpeedUP! Europe (SUE) is a disruptive end‐to‐end acceleration and support program to foster
entrepreneurial education, innovation and ramp‐up to finance. It is embedded in the European
Commission Future Internet‐Public Private Partnership (FI‐PPP) Program under the 7th framework,
and related to Future Internet Platform “FIWARE”, the Open Source Generic Enablers Building Bricks.
The programme was launched with 16 other accelerators as part of the last phase of FI‐PPP with the
goal of creating an ecosystem of entrepreneurs and SME‐driven innovation.
Through SUE, up to 100 entrepreneurs and SME’s can be funded with €50,000, as well as receiving
coaching, training, and access to many events within the period of the programme. These start‐ups
and SME’s were to develop innovative services based on the FIWARE generic & specific enablers in
the areas of AgriBusiness, SmartCities and CleanTech. The application period started in the fall‐
winter of 2014, then the 96 selected projects joined the acceleration phase in February 2015 and
ended on October 31st 2015. The project is present in several cities through “hub” system;
Hamburg, Stockholm, Copenhagen and Amsterdam. The SUE teams are supported by a combination
of virtual tools (online platform for matchmaking, idea generation and call management) and a
series of physical workshops organized across Europe, where entrepreneurs can meet, grow their
ideas, develop their product and receive feedback from customers, partners and investors.
SpeedUP! Europe had a budget of € 5.5 million, allocated as grants via open calls to up to 100
selected project teams to develop innovative web based applications using FIWARE generic &
specific enablers in the areas of AgriBusiness, SmartCities and CleanTech. Part of this budget was
allocated to award the best project teams in the programme.
SpeedUP! Europe planned and organised at the end of the its acceleration process an Award with a
dedicated prize money of 500.000 € for the best five teams. Deliverable D3.5 is about the Award
management and the results.
2. Applicationcriteria The application process for the awards was open to the top 30 project teams part of the SpeedUP!
Europe Acceleration Programme. These teams have been evaluated throughout the acceleration
programme and ranked according to pre‐set evaluation criteria. However, as the last teams in the
ranked list had the same ranking, the award was finally opened to 31 teams. Table 1 below provides
the list of the initial 31 projects based on the ranking after the 3rd Milestone of the Acceleration
Programme. Only the project teams in this list could apply and compete for the Awards.

During the last phase of the acceleration process, the teams had to prepare a recap (30 pages limit
following a provided template) about their acceleration experience, a 30 pages document describing
their project, product, team, business model, their achievements, what they are looking for etc. The
document could be easily repurposed to be presented to investors or potential partners. The teams
received a template for this document and were supported to produce it. The teams had to submit
this document as part of their application for the awards.

A pitching day was organised during the ECFI 2016/ Entrepreneurship Summit in Hamburg on the 5th
November 2015 to find the ‚best’ five teams out of the remaining best SpeedUP! Teams during the 9
month accelerating process.
Applicants had to submit an application of maximum 30 pages latest on 31 October 2015. A
template to prepare the applications has been sent to the project teams who can apply. Applicants
were encouraged to submit draft versions in advance of the deadline, which may be updated
(replaced) up to the submission deadline.
The rules about the Award were circulated to all participating teams prior to the pitching days and
are provided in Annex I.
3. EvaluationProcess All applicants were invited to pitch at the European Conference on the Future Internet (ECFI) in
Hamburg on 5th November 2015. Each project team applying for the awards was invited to make a
pitch of 7 minutes followed by 3 minutes Q&A in front of a Jury.
Figure 1 Raffle Order of the pitch presentations of the teams
The jury evaluated the projects pitching according to the following set of 5 criteria, on a scale from 1
to 10:
Team Ecellence: we mean all active team members, but also a wider network such as
advisors, coaches, and other stakeholders, also the integration of pilot customers.
Funding Strategy: status quo, given outlook for minimum 6 months, the structure of
financing and funding for the next minimum 12 months.
Impact: needs and pains solved for the customers, the market size potentially address, and
the go‐to market strategies, and also the social impact.
Business Model: proved and validated, replicable, competitive, potentially disruptive.
Product / Solution Excellence: how solve customer's needs and pains, balance between
complexity and simplicity of the product or solution and readiness for the different markets.

Prior to the pitching session, two rapporteurs had to read the application files and provide a
summary to the Jury, The rapporteurs took part of the Jury discussions after the pitches to assist the
jury members in their decision process in case there was no consensus about a specific pitch. The
Jury members had also access to the application files if they want or needed to.
An award ceremony was scheduled during ECFI (The European Conference on the Future Internet)
on the 6th November 2015, at 20:00 to announce and celebrate the Award winners.

Moderation
The pitching session was moderated by Stefan Stengel (SpeedUp! Europe)
Task
The task of the jury was to find the ‚best five teams out of the pitching Start‐Ups and award them
with the prizes from #1 to #5.
Procedure
Each start‐up team pitched for seven minutes. During and after each pitch the members of the jury
individually awarded points in five categories. When all the pitches were finished, the jury members
individually added up the points they had given and – still individually – came up with a list of their
own favourite seven teams. They then gave their #1‐team seven points and their #7‐team one point.
A collaborative list was made with all teams that had received points – and, of course, an added
score list.
5. Results On the final score list only eleven teams were to be found. And only seven teams had enough points
to be potentially qualifying for the TOP FIVE. This fact already pointed toward an altogether rather
consentanous process of evaluation.
(#1) The number #1‐team was impressively obvious. With a score of 28 points (out of a possible 35
points) LOOKLOCAL was not only on every jury members’ top seven list but also highly ranked on
everybodies position sheet and ‐most impressively‐ with high scores in every category that was to be
judged. LOOKLOCALs fashion cloud enables the fashion industry the efficient exchange of their
digital content – and their approach convinced every single jury member to the fullest.
(#2) Four out of five jury members had this Start‐Up‐Team ranked (high) on their individual list.
These four jury members emphasized the importance and relevance of this projects’ market – web
video content. VIZZR has created and established a plattform for exciting web videos ‐ with the
important aspect and a USP of reliable management and selling of the associated rights.
(#3) While the first two places were decided on rather ‚undisputedly’ and with little discussion ‐ this
third place was argued about. The consultants were asked about the written recaps, the remaining
five teams were analyzed and discussed thouroughly. After engaged disussions among the jury
members WORLDFAVOUR MOBILE APP was finally unanimously selected for third place. Their
convincing social impact and exceptionally enthusiastic approach made the difference.

©SpeedUP! Europe Version v1.0 Date: 21 September 2016 9
(#4 & #5) Now there were four potential candidates for the 4th&5th place left. Again the recaps
were consulted to answer open questions that hadn’t been answered during the pitches. Following
these closer looks at the projects the jury agreed that two of the four projects were not quite as
suitable for 4th and 5th place as the other two – especially the potential of the business models was
a deciding factor. So, BINEE and SPONSOO were agreed on to be sharing 4th and 5th place.
Eventhough BINEE had not yet convincingly commited for one particular business model their
business potential was highly evaluated. The jury was convinced that at least one of the proposed
business models had good chances to be very successful. And the jury members appreciated the
social and environmental impact BINEE can have on their international markets. SPONSOOs
impressive progress during the programme highlighted the strengths of their Start‐Up, and the jury
members were convinced that – if this continuous progress could be kept up – SPONSOO would
have very good chances of establishing themselves in the field of sport sponsoring. If not even
changing it fundamentally.
It took about seven hours for all the teams to pitch and then another two more hours for the Jury to
discuss, reach consensus and select the winners. In the end the jury expressed their respect for the
effort of all teams. Their level of commitment, enthusiasm and – already – professionalism was way
above average and a good recommendation for the SpeedUp! Europe Programme.
Price Money
SpeedUP! Europe will give prizes to the best teams from the acceleration programme. A total
amount of 500.000 Euros will be given, divided into 5 prizes for 5 distinct project
teams.
The total of the prize of 500.000 Euros is split in the following way:
200.000 will be given to the best ranked team
125.000 Euros for the second best team
75.000 Euros for the third best team
50.000 Euros for the fourth best team
50.000 Euros for the fifth best team
The award prize money will be paid to the teams along with the final SpeedUP Europe payment.
6. Conclusion
The Award at the ECFI 2015/ Entrepreneurship Summit in Hamburg was the last great event for all
SpeedUP! Europe Teams. The best 30 teams of the 9 month period pitched their business ideas and
the results of the 9 month work. The best five teams won an award (total prize of 500.000 Euros) and
more importantly after the awards their next investor deals. For example Fashion Cloud had a
company valuation of 8.000.000 €. Sponsoo for example 2.500.000 €.
