Why are Kiwis endangered?

They are endangered because they are being predated by cats and rats. It’s habitat and distruction of large tracks of native bush is also endangering the Kiwis.

How many Kiwis are left?

When the Maori arrived in New Zealand, there were about 12 million Kiwis. Their population decreased slowly to 1930 when there were only 5 million left. Now a days, there are only 50-60 thousand Kiwis and that number is falling really quickly.

What are their predators?

The main predators of a kiwi are actually introduced species. It includes Ferrets, Stoats, Cats and wild dogs. Some animals such as Weasels an Rats are targeting their eggs. These creatures account up to 95% of kiwi deaths.

The Kiwi is the color brown and is flightless. It has a long beak, short legs and it’s the size of a chicken.

Facts about Kiwis

There are 5 species that are fed by worms, fruits and grubs. They are known to lay a larger egg to it’s body size. They eat insects, dwells grounds and really rare. Kiwis are only in New Zealand, so that means it’s native to N.Z. it sleeps in the day and it awakes at night.
