Theme

As we have discussed, themes are central ideas or lessons. Can you list some themes that occur in Ender’s Game?


Themes in Ender’s Game

A central theme in Ender’s Game is humanity and what it means to be human. What separates humans from animals, or in Ender’s Game, what separates the humans from the buggers?

Ender shows his humanity when he saves the last bugger queen

Ender might have to suspend his own humanity to save all of humanity from the buggers

“Human beings are free except when humanity needs them.” - Colonel Graff



The concept of ruthlessness is central to Ender’s Game. Ender goes to great lengths to completely destroy his enemy.

Ender beats Stilson so severely he dies

Ender defeats all the buggers

Ender breaks Bernard’s arm



The story is driven by games, but the games have an important relationship to the real world.

The games are not really games at all. They serve a very serious purpose.

The final battle (and all of the other battles) was not really a game.

Ender

Andrew “Ender” Wiggin feels out of place because he is a Third. He can be extremely violent and ruthless, yet he also possesses great compassion and understanding. Due to those conflicting qualities, Ender struggles with his identity and worries he is just like his older brother.


Peter

Peter is incredibly smart but also incredibly violent. He seems to lack self-control and compassion. He manipulates everyone. Under a pseudonym, he engages in political persuasion which eventually leads him to become Hegemon, ruler of the world.


Valentine

Valentine is caring and compassionate. She cares for and protects Ender. She must convince Ender to keep going when he wants to leave Battle School. She also engages in political persuasion with Peter.


Mazer RackhamMazer Rackham was the hero of the last Bugger War. He becomes Ender’s final teacher. He can be very cruel to Ender. Many of the lessons he teaches Ender are accomplished with physical violence. He tricks Ender into believing the final battles are only games.


Bean

Bean is very small, but he is very much like Ender. He is very smart and helps Ender come up with ways to win the games, even when the odds are stacked heavily against them. He is one of Ender’s commanders during the final battle.
