The women’s tennis team lost

four key players to graduation but

enters 2010 under new leadership

with aspirations of making a fourth

straight The Commonwealth Coast

Conference championship appear-

ance. First year head coach, Lauren

MacKay, hopes to utilize returning

players with game experience in

pursuit of the Gulls’ second TCCC

crown.

Last season, the Blue and Green

nearly repeated as conference

champions, falling to Colby-Sawyer

College in the final to finish the

season 14-4. The Gulls begin 2010

without a senior on the roster and

will look to quickly fill the holes

at number two, three, and four

singles. The doubles pairings will

also be brand new.

Endicott returns their top singles

and doubles player in junior Kate

Cioffi, who went 13-3 in number

one singles and 14-4 in doubles

as a sophomore. The two-time

conference Player of the Week

earned First Team All-TCCC

recognition in both categories.

Fellow juniors Emily Annis and

Kerri Dunn come back after mak-

ing significant contributions last

year. Annis earned five wins in

2009, including a pair of victories

in the TCCC tournament. Dunn also

earned five wins in singles play

while finishing 3-3 in the number

three doubles spot. Look for

the two to fill the void left by

graduation and play an increased

role in 2010.

A number of returning players

hope to play a more active role in

2010. Kristen DiFillippo finished

1-0 in both singles and doubles

last season and looks to step into

the starting rotation on a consis-

tent basis. Fellow junior Laura

MacLeod, as well as a slew of

returning sophomores, hopes to

make a splash this year.

Freshmen Kelly DiPietrantonio,

Alana Rizzo, and Melanie Weinick

will be vying for spots from the

start of the season. The Gulls will

be tested early as they play host to

Nichols College in the early stages

of the season. The Blue and Green

hope to utilize the friendly con-

fines of the South Campus Courts,

where they are 28-2 over the past

three seasons, in their pursuit of

the 2010 TCCC title.

Lauren MacKayThe Athletic Department will welcome Lauren MacKay as the new

head coach for the men’s and women’s tennis programs for the 2010-11 academic year. MacKay brings fi ve years of coaching experience and a strong playing background to both programs which are looking to improve upon last year’s successes.

MacKay takes over a women’s tennis program that, since the 2007-08 season, has 46 wins to just 12 losses, including the program’s fi rst The Commonwealth Coast Con-ference Championship (TCCC) in 2008 and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. The men’s tennis program is coming off a 9-9 season in 2010 after having double-digit match wins and appearances in the TCCC Semifi nals in 2008 and 2009.

Mackay, a four-year player, captain, and Academic All-American for the University of Massachusetts at Amherst women’s tennis team, earned her bachelor degree in Kinesiology in 2009.

During her playing years for the NCAA Division I Minutemen out of the Atlantic 10 Conference, MacKay earned her highest national ranking of 125 and was named the team’s Most Improved Player for the 2005-06 season. She also received the Coaches Award for the 2008-09 season. She was a member of the Senior Staff Athletic Council and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

MacKay, along with her experience, is also certifi ed with the United States Tennis Association Professional Tennis Registry. She is also a certifi ed personal trainer from the American College of Sports Medicine and a certi-fi ed Strength and Conditioning Specialist from the National Strength and Conditioning Association. MacKay has spent time as a strength and conditioning coach, personal trainer, and fi tness instruction for Campus Recreation at UMass. She also worked as a strength and conditioning coach with a focus on sports performance during the Fall 2009 semester at Stanford University where she assisted the student-athletes of all 34 Olympic sports.
