    GULLS

    20102010womens volleyball

  • The womens volleyball program sets a goal every season to not just reach the conference playoffs, but to continually win the championship and go to the NCAA Tournament. The Gulls have made a history of doing just that, as they have reached the first round of the big dance four of the past six years. In 2010, that goal will be no different despite being knocked out of the TCCC playoffs in the semifinals last season.

Four starters and six contributing players make up the athletes return-ing to compete under Head Coach Tim Byram. Last years squad broke a five-year streak of 20-win seasons after compiling a 19-17 record with a solid 9-1 mark in-conference. The drop in wins can be attributed to a standard that has been a part of this program for a long time: challenging the team with highly-ranked national and regional opponents.

This fall, the Blue and Green will take to the court against seven teams that went to the NCAA Tournament in 2009 including Tufts who reached the Elite-8 and La Verne that played into the third round. Byram has scheduled three schools from the top 25 in the nation and nine of the top 15 from the New England region. One of the teams biggest challenges this season will be a west coast trip to the La Verne Invitational, where the Gulls will be facing off against three of the top programs in that region: La Verne, Cal Lutheran, and UC Santa Cruz. With their history of success, the Gulls will undoubtedly remain among the top contenders for a conference title and a possible return trip to the NCAA Tournament to face off against some of these non-conference foes.

Looking at this years roster, Coach Byram lost just one senior to gradua-tion and welcomes back four players that started in at least 80 percent of the matches from 2009, including three all-conference players. The loss of Stephanie Wiese (Higganum, Conn.) will surely be felt at the outside hitter spot as Wiese ended her career as the programs all-time leader in kills with 1,447 and earned TCCC First Team All-Conference honors last year.

Returning at outside hitter position is senior Brittany Phillips (Sudbury, Mass.) who for the third season

in-a-row earned all-conference honors by being named to the TCCC Second Team. Phillips shined with 300 kills at an average of 2.46 kills per set, both of which were second best on the team. She also proved to be effective on the serve with 53 aces as well as defen-sively with 354 digs.

At the net, the Gulls will look towards middle blocker, Amy Grigg (Vernon, Conn.) and opposite, Elyse Barbour (Greenville, R.I.) for an intimidating presence as both players tower over six-foot tall. Grigg, a senior who led the team with 114 total blocks in 2009, started in 33 of Endicotts 36 matches last year which was the most on the team. Barbour earned a TCCC Second Team All-Conference nod after posting 219 kills with a .220 hit percentage while making 86 blocks last season. The size and athleticism of this pair combine to form one of the top net presences in New England.

Senior Ally Murphy (Gilford, N.H.) logged the majority of the time at the setter position in 2009 and impressed with 614 assists for an average of 4.72 per set. Murphy also showed her de-fensive prowess by compiling 249 digs. With the arrival of junior transfer Sarah Allshouse (Berthoud, Colo.), Murphys skills will likely be shifted to a more de-fensive need as Allshouse has shown the ability to be a strong setter coming from Mid America Nazarene University.

With a year of college volleyball under their belts, this falls sophomore class is hungry for their first title. Ashley Norley (Sudbury, Mass.) was a three time TCCC Rookie of the Week award winner and plans to anchor the serve receive and defense from her libero position. Gillian Kucharski (Avon, Conn.) also played a variety of defensive roles for the Gulls and is sure to find some time. Allison Schait (Mattituck, N.Y.) and Liz Duggan (Kingstown, R.I.) will also be counted on to provide depth and ball control in their defensive roles. Falyn Torellis (Pelham, N.Y.) athleticism could have her playing a variety of roles while competing for the other outside hitter spot.

Also returning to Endicott, but not playing, will be sophomore outside hitter Jackie Gardner (Manhatten Beach, Calif.) who suffered a shoulder

  • injury that will keep her out of fall competition. The Gulls will anxiously await her return in the spring following shoulder surgery.

This season, Coach Byram has added three freshmen to the roster in 2010 including California All-CIF Division 5 Player of the Year Alexandra Gearin (Los Angeles, Calif.) who will be a presence as a middle blocker. Joining Gearin will be Carly Beers (Traverse City, Mich.) and Callie Dolan (Westford, Mass.).

The combination of Callie Dolan and Alexandra Gearin will provide tremendous depth to the middle blocker position behind senior Amy Grigg. Both Dolan and Gearin are smaller in size than their senior teammate, but make up for it with above average athleticism.

Carly Beers will be expected to develop quickly with her competitiveness and athleticism in the setting role. With fellow newcomer, Sarah Allshouse the off ense is expected to take on a much diff erent tempo than it did last season.

Looking ahead to the fall schedule, Endicott have their eyes set on a number of matches that will be very telling about how they stand against the competition. The Gulls will have a rematch against Roger Williams University, the TCCC school that upset them in the semifi nals and went on to win the conference title. That match will be played on September 29 at 7:00 p.m. in Bristol, Rhode Island, and it is the fi rst of three in-a-row against TCCC opponents,

with the next two being played on October 3 against Wentworth and Western New England in home tri-match in Beverly. The Gulls then travel westward to play in the La Verne Invita-tional from October 8-9 and then return home to play in another crucial non-conference tour-nament against NCAA Tournament qualifi ers SUNY New Paltz and Wellesley at the Wellesley Invitational on October 16-17. Over the next two weeks, the opponents have consistently sat at the top of the New England region rank-ings and include NESCAC rivals Tufts, Conn and Bowdoin. Endicott will wrap up the season with two fi nal matches against TCCC oppo-nents Gordon and Salve Regina on October 28 and 30, respectively, before the conference playoff s begin in the fi rst week in November.

Tim ByramTim Byram has served as the head coach for both the mens and womens volleyball programs at Endicott since the 1999-2000 season.

Over his eleven years as a womens coach, Byrams programs have enjoyed both team and individual successes. Under Byrams helm, the Gulls have compiled an overall record of 200 148 (.575) and a conference record of 74 17 (.813). The Blue and Green have made six consecutive post season appearances (NCAAs in 04, 06, 07, 08 and ECACs in 05 and 09) while claiming three consecutive and four of the last six TCCC Championships. His players have com-bined to earn numerous Player or Rookie of the Week honors, two Conference Rookie of the Year honors, one Conference Player of the Year, 36 All-Conference Team members, three AVCA All-Region, and one Second Team All-American honors.

In 2009, his Endicott squad was upset in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) semifi nals after recording three straight conference championships from 2006-2008. The Gulls, however, posted an overall record of 19 17 while going 9-1 in conference play, and earned a trip to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament as the fi fth seed. The team had four players earn TCCC honors with Stephanie Wiese (1st), Brittany Phillips (2nd), Elyse Barbour (2nd), and Ally Murphy (Hon. Mention) all recognized.

In ten seasons as a mens coach at Endicott, his teams have amassed an overall record of 178135 (.569) and a conference record of 10636 (.746). Byrams teams have made seven play-off appearances in the NECVA Championships and qualifi ed for postseason play in the ECAC Championships in 2004, 05, 07, 08 and 09. His players have combined to earn numerous Player or Rookie of the Week honors, two NECVA New England Player of the Year, one NECVA New England Libero of the Year, one NECVA New England Rookie of the Year, 24 All-Conference Team members, four AVCA Second Team All-American (Jeremy Fontaine 04, 05; AJ Witkofsky 08, 09), and three AVCA First Team All-American honors (Dan Coleman 06, 08, 09).

During the 2010 season, the team claimed their second NECVA New England division title, going 15-1 in division play and 28-8 overall. The team advanced to the NECVA Tournament, where they defeated Emmanuel College before falling to Philadelphia Biblical University who eventually reached the championship match.

The team had four players earn NECVA New England honors with A.J. Witkofsky, John Emery, James Silva, and Ben Foster all picking up hard-ware. Witkofsky was also honored as the New England division Player of the Year.

A 1994 graduate of the University of Maine-Farmington, Byram earned MAC and NAIA Regional Coach of the Year honors while coaching the Beavers as a senior. As an assistant at St. Josephs College in 1996-97, he helped the Monks capture their fi rst-ever Maine Athletic Conference title. In 1999, serving as the interim head coach at Bates College, Byram led the Bobcats to a 33-6 record and an ECAC Championship. Coach Byram has 18 seasons of head coaching experience between womens and mens volleyball at the college level.

Coach Byram has been an active volleyball player throughout New England. Serving as an assistant coach, his regional club teams have won multiple regional championships and competed at the national championships three times. Byram has also been honored by being named the head coach of the 20022007 New England Youth High Performance Teams.

In addition to his coaching responsibilities, Coach Byram also runs a NIKE Volleyball Camp each summer and serves as the Transportation and Compliance Coordinator for the Endicotts Department of Athletics. Byram also serves on several boards and committees. On the womens side, Byram has been appointed to the NCAA Womens Volleyball Championship Committee (through 2012) and is an active member of both the AVCA and New England Womens Volleyball Association. On the mens side, he has served on the executive board of the North East Collegiate Volleyball Association as the New England Representative and currently participates with the AVCA as both a poll voter for the AVCA top 15 ranking and a member of the Mens Division III All-American Committee.
