Endnote Overview

Description of EndNote

•What is EndNote?

•A citation management tool

•Available to all Duquesne affiliated users at no charge!

What Can EndNote Do?

• Installed on your computer, but can access and manage from any computer using EndNote Web

• Stores large number of sources – and PDF files

• Create bibliographies in 5,000+ styles – including APA!

• Format papers with Cite While You Write

• Open, annotate, and search PDF files

• Share references (with other EndNote users)

Downloading & Installing

Downloading Steps Overview

•Getting Started:

•Multipass is required as download is from DORI

•Once in DORI Click Index > Campus Services> Computer Store > Software Downloads

•Scroll to the bottom of the CTS Software Download Page to find EndNote. Click Download Windows or Download Mac accordingly.

Downloading Step 1: DORI/Multipass

Go to the Index in DORI

Select Campus Services

Select “Computer Store”

Select “Software Downloads”

Download the version most appropriate for your computer

The installer should launch automatically

Accept all defaults through the install process and select “Finish”

First Time Opening EndNote

•Need to create a library the first time you open

•An EndNote library is the file that will hold all of your citation information

When you first open EndNote you will not have a default library

If you are not prompted to create one, select file > new

The library created here is “My EndNote Library.enl”

Once the library is created, you may select a default style (here

APA 6th is selected)

Adding References

There are many ways to add a reference, here are 2 of the most

popular

•Manually

•Import from a database

To add a reference Manually go to References > New Reference

Select the type of reference

Add as much information as you like

And if desired attach a PDF

Here is a sample reference

The reference will now appear in your library

To import a reference from a database or other source, do the following with EndNote running

•Search for an article in a database

•Look for the “export” or “cite” feature

•Select EndNote as the destination

For example, while in JSTOR do a search for “Leadership”

From the results, select a couple of articles by clicking on

the check boxes

Select Export to export the citations to EndNote

A common file format for references is a RIS file. Select it here

You should be prompted to open the RIS file with EndNote

The citations will now appear in your EndNote library

To create a bibliography from your EndNote Library, Open Microsoft Word

Note that EndNote X7 now appears as a tab in Microsoft Word (PC Version)

From the EndNote X7 tab, select “Insert Citation”

Search for the citation you wish to insert, and select “Insert”

Your in-text citation along with the bibliographic citation now appear in your

Word document

Tips

Things to note about EndNote Citations

•Acronyms

•Multiple authors •Use separate line for each author

•Can put in first, last order or last, first

•Organizations as authors•Very frequent with websites: type in organization name, then add comma. This prevents Duquesne University being listed as D. University or University, D.

•Remember to add a comma after the corporate author name or EndNote will format as Lastname, Firstname

Addressing Endnote’s Limitations

•EndNote can help with citation creation, but is not 100% perfect.

•EndNote is not free after you leave Duquesne.
