What is EndNote?•Program used to manage and organize references
•Two versions: Desktop, Web• We will only use Desktop!
•Functions• Create a library of all your references
• Automatically format the references in the needed style (APA, MLA, etc.)
• Group, sort, and search references
• Add notes to references
• Store articles, pictures, data, and media with your references
• Cite while you write in Microsoft Word
Reminder: Why to Cite•Using someone else’s work without a citation is plagiarism, which results in serious consequences, especially for college students!
•Most published information, whether on the Web or in print, is copyrighted automatically and subject to copyright laws
NOTE: In addition to text, you must cite images, media formats, and anyone else’s ideas and words
Where to find EndNote•ODU provides EndNote free
•Best way to access EndNote: Use Remote Desktop Connection to log into vclab.cs.odu.edu• vclab is the Computer Science department’s “virtual computer” lab—you have all the same programs as
if you are logged into the recitation lab computers
• For instructions on using vclab, see the portal
Using EndNote—Opening a Library•Open EndNote• Go to the start menu, search for EndNote
•If you do not have an existing library, or wish to create a new one:• Go to File->New
• Rename the library to something useful, example: cs121References
• Save your new library
•If you already have an existing library:• File->Open->Open Library
Using EndNote—Creating References•Choose the formatting style you wish to us• For this class: APA 6th
•Two ways of creating references• Manually creating a reference
• Importing a reference
Creating References—Manually •Use for: Any source which does not have an export citation option, i.e. books, websites, etc
•Go to References->New Reference
•Or, simply click the button circled
•Change the Reference Type to whichever type of reference you are creating
•Fill in the information accurately and as completely as possible
•Save the Reference and exit out of the New Reference subwindow (the little grey X under the big red X)
Creating References—Importing •Use for: Sources with an export citation option, i.e. journal articles found in a library database
•After finding a good source in your library database of choice, choose the “Export Citation” option
•Select “RIS file”
•Open the downloaded citation
Importing a Reference—JSTOR example•Go to www.jstor.org
•Search for your topic
•After finding an article which suits your needs, open it• You should have something similar to this screen
•Choose “Cite This Item”
Importing a Reference—JSTOR example•Choose “RIS file”• This will download a citation file
•Open the citation file• You now have imported the file into
EndNote
In-Text Citations in Microsoft Word•Choose the EndNote tab
•Make sure the style is APA 6th
•Choose “Go to EndNote”
In-Text Citations in Microsoft Word•Highlight the Reference you wish to cite
•Click the “Insert Reference” button
•You now have the in-text citation along
with the full reference
Copying References—EndNote to Word•Useful when you want to have a cited source in proper format, but do not need an in-text citation• Especially useful in assignment 1, when you are finding sources but not necessarily using them yet
•In EndNote, right click the source you wish to copy• Choose “Copy Formatted”
•In Word, with the cursor where you wish to place the source• Press CTRL+V
• Or right click and choose “Keep Source Formatting” under “Paste Options”
• Change the font style and size to match that of your document

• Click on Organize• Click on New group(Prompt arises asking for group name)• Give a name to your Group

•Give permissions
•Choose file
•Click on Apply to add
