Welcome once again to our annual Endoscopy 2018Workshop themed

“Therapeutic Endoscopy: Building on Basics” jointly organised by the

MalaysianSocietyofGastroenterologyandHepatologyandtheUniversityof

Malaya.Asalways,wehavetheprivilegeofassemblingafacultycomprising

someofthemostwell-knownendoscopistsintheworld.Oneoftheoriginal

‘masters’ in endoscopy, Dr Thierry Ponchon has been instrumental in

endoscopytraining,namelyundertheauspicesoftheEuropeanSocietyof

GastrointestinalEndoscopy(ESGE)andweareproudtohavehimdeliver

the distinguished lecture for the Workshop. As an exceptional all-round

interventionalendoscopist,DrArthurKaffeswasaninvitedfacultyin2011

andwewelcomehimbacktotheWorkshop.TheJapanesearepioneersin

endoscopicsubmucosaldissectionandballoonassistedenteroscopyand

wearefortunatetohaveDrNoriyaUedoandDrKazuoOhtsuka,whoare

Objectives and Format of Workshop

Emphasis on practical tips in therapeutic endoscopy: technique, indications limitations and pitfalls. In particular in this year’s workshop we will be introducing several new sophisticated procedures which we want our participants to learn, appreciate their utility but at the same time to be critical about their application and usefulness in our daily clinical practice.

Procedures will include direct cholangioscopy, endoscopic ultrasound, enhanced imaging endoscopy, endoscopic submucosal dissection and endoscopic mucosal resection of gastric and colonic neoplasms.

Curriculum Vitae of Faculty

Hwoon-Yong Jung Seoul, KoreaProfessor Dr Jung graduated from Seoul National University (MD, 1988) and obtained his PhD at Hanyang University in 2005. He served as a Resident of Internal Medicine at SNUH (1989-1992) and subsequently pursued his Fellowship at Asan Medical Center (1995-1997). He has been a Professor at University of Ulsan College of Medicine, Asan Medical Center inSongpa-gu, Seoul, Korea and was a visiting scholar at UC, San Diego (2002-2004). He has many publications on ESD of gastric and esophageal neoplasms as well as on gastric cancer and GI motility.

Kazuo Ohtsuka Tokyo, JapanProfessor Dr Ohtsuka is a consultant physician and GI therapeutic endoscopist. He graduated from Niigata University School of Medicine in 1988 and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Akita Red Cross Hospital. He went on to obtain his doctoral degree from Niigata University Graduate School in 1995, following which he went to the University of Southern California for research fellowship culminating in him beinggiven the 18th Annual American College of Rheumatology Senior Rheumatology Scholar Award. After returning to Japan, he worked as a faculty at the Showa University Northern Yokohama Hospital for 11 years. During this period of time, he participated in the development of capsule endoscopy and single-balloon enteroscopy (SBE). He also popularised the single-operator method for SBE. Since 2012, he has been working in Tokyo Medical and Dental University, focusing on endoscopic diagnosis and treatment of inammatory bowel disease and other small bowel diseases.

Arthur Kaffes Sydney, AustraliaAssociate Professor Dr Arthur J Kaffes is a gastroenterologist andtherapeutic endoscopist at the Royal Prince Alfred and Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney and is a clinical associate professor at the University of Sydney Clinical School. After completing gastroenterology training in Sydney Australia, he underwent two years of therapeutic endoscopy training at Westmead Hospital Sydney and endoscopy fellowship with Dr D N Reddy in Hyderabad, India. Dr Kaffes has a keen interest in pancreatobiliary endoscopy, balloon enteroscopy and quality colonoscopy and has published and presented papers and abstracts in all these areas in both local forums and overseas meetings. This has led to some new techniques and devices for metallic stenting in benign disease, side-port EUS FNA, and ERCP in altered anatomy. The first balloon enteroscopy procedure in Australia was performed by Dr Kaffes and he now has the largest experience in Australia. His current research interests include polyp characterization with zoom colonoscopy and further technologies to improve polyp detection. Dr Kaffes hosts one of the largest national live meetings in the area of endoscopy annually at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital where these techniques are often presented and discussed.

Nonthalee Pausawasdi Bangkok, ThailandDr Nonthalee Pausawasdi received her M.D. degree from Thailand in 1996 and pursued her postdoctoral research training and residency in internal medicine, GI fellowship, and advanced endoscopy fellowship training at the University of Michigan during 1997 to 2008. Her interest has been in the area of ERCP and EUS, particularly the utility of EUS in the evaluation of pancreatic cystic neoplasms and EUS guided tissue acquisition. She is currently an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, Thailand. She has also served as the Secretary General of the Gastroenterological Association of Thailand and a board member of the Thai Association of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

Noriya Uedo Osaka, JapanDr Uedo is a clinical investigator and endoscopist at the Osaka International Cancer Institute. He graduated from the School of Medicine, Kagoshima University in 1992. Dr Uedo started his training in Gastrointestinal Oncologyand Endoscopy in the Osaka Medical Center for Cancer and Cardiovascular Diseases in 1994. His current research interests are application of newendoscopic imaging and therapeutic technique to management of gastrointestinal cancers and establishment of efficient training of advanced endoscopic procedures. He is a councilor of Japanese Gastroenterological Endoscopic Society, Japanese Society of Gastroenterology, Japanese Gastric Cancer Association and Japanese Esophageal Society, and an international member of American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. He has education experience as a visiting professor in Malmoe University Hospital, Lund University, Sweden; 301 PLA General Hospital, China and Fukuoka University Chikushi Hospital, Japan.

Thierry Ponchon Lyon, FranceProfessor Dr Thierry Ponchon is a specialist in hepatogastroenterology at Edouard Hospital, Lyon. He received his medical training at Lyon Medical University and is member of the board of the National French Society of Gastroenterology and the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE), among others. He was Co-Editor-in-Chief of the journal Endoscopy. His main focus is on digestive endoscopy, esophageal carcinoma, colorectal cancer screening and biliopancreatic diseases.

Professor Dr Thierry Ponchon(Edouard Herriot Hospital, Lyon, France)

Thierry Ponchon graduated in 1984 from Lyon University. He went on

almost immediately to train in digestive diseases and endoscopy in

1985 and completed his PhD in Lyon Science University in 1992. He was

awarded his Professorship in Medicine and Hepatogastroenterology

at the University Hospital Herriot in 1995 and was the Head of the

Gastroenterology Unit at Edouard Herriot Hospital, Lyon from 2007 to

2017.

Dr Ponchon is a key opinion leader throughout Europe and has held

many key positions such as Past President of Societe Francaised’ Endoscopie Digestive (SFED) and

is an active committee member of World Endoscopy Organization (WEO-OMED). He is currently

the President of European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE). As part of his continuing

dedication to Endoscopy Training, he will be organising the inaugural ESGE Days Congress 2018 to be

held in Budapest. Dr Ponchon has numerous publications and is currently Editor-in-Chief of Endoscopy

International Open and was Co-Editor-in-Chief of Endoscopy.

I was fortunate enough to have seen Dr Ponchon in action for the first time in 2001 during a live

demonstration in St. Marks Hospital during my first year of training as a gastroenterologist. Out of

all the faculty members, he certainly stood out through his unique teaching style which was both

educational and entertaining. Therefore, given his vast experience and expertise, I can think of no one

better to present the Malaysian Society of Gastroenterology & Hepatology and the University of Malaya

Distinguished Lecture for this year’s Endoscopy Workshop, Therapeutic Endoscopy: Building on Basics.
