Many have stated that it is impossible to know whether ornot we are living in the last days before the second comingof Jesus Christ. However, below you will find dramaticproof that this is the last times. All of the proofs belowtaken together defy coincidence.

1. EUPHRATES RIVER TO BE DRIED UP: InRevelation 16:12,the Bible predictsthat the EuphratesRiver will be driedup to prepare theway for the kingsof the east to in-vade Israel. Thiswill happen at thetime of the battleof Armageddonaccording to verse16 of the same

chapter. The battle of Armageddon will be the final battle atwhich time Jesus Christ will return and fight on the side ofthe nation of Israel. Immediately thereafter He will estab-lish His kingdom and usher in His 1000-year reign ofpeace.On January 13th, 1990, the Indianapolis Star carried theheadline “Turkey will cut off flow of Euphrates for 1month.” The article stated that a huge reservoir had beenbuilt by Turkey. While filling up the reservoir, the flow ofthe Euphrates would be stopped for one month and a con-crete plug for a diversion channel built. These things havenow been done. With this newly built dam, Turkey has theability to stop the Euphrates River at will. The conditionsfor fulfilling this 1900 year old prophecy are now in place!

2. CHINA GOES TO WAR: In Revelation 9:15-16, the Bible prophesies that an army of 200 million

soldiers will launch awar which will kill“the third part ofmen”. Never in thehistory of the world,until our present gen-eration, has therebeen a power onearth that could field200 million soldiers.However, the lateruler of China, MaoTsetung boasted inhis diary that he

could field an army of 200 million. We see that thisprophecy pertaining to the very last times could not everhave been fulfilled until now.

3. WORLDWIDE NUMBERING SYSTEM PRE-DICTED: In Revelation chapter 13, the Bible prophesiesthat a world dictator will soon rule over a world govern-ment. He will cause all people on the earth to receive anumber without which they will be unable to buy or sell.We are seeing this prophecy fulfilled before our eyes in amost astonishing way. Nearly every human being in theworld now has been assigned a number. In America it is oursocial security number. In the last few years we have seenthis number extended to small children. A child without asocial security number cannot be declared as a dependent onan income tax return. We have seen the emergence of elec-tronic money, shopping with credit cards, and many peopleare urging the abolishment of cash. All of these things couldnot possibly have been fulfilled until this present time. Onlyafter the invention of the computer could such a worldwidenumbering system be administered.

4. THE EMERGENCE OF A NEW WORLDORDER: Revelation 13:7 and Daniel 7:23 prophesy the establishment of aworld government.We recently haveseen the term “newworld order” beingused by the leadingpolitical people of ourworld. MikhailGorbachev has madethe term famous, andPope John Paul II hasreferred to it repeat-edly. Finally ourformer President,George Bush, in theChicago Tribune, September 12, 1990, said “Iraq is thefirst test for the new world order.” He stated emphaticallythat the Iraq War is Saddam Hussein against the world. TheUnited Nations troops are continually referred to as themulti-national forces. The decision has been made to estab-lish an interdependent community of nations that will rulethe world under United Nations authority. The Bible saysthat this will lead us into a great world government. We cansee this happening right before our eyes.

COINCIDENCE OR DIVINE PROVIDENCE? TheEuphrates River can be dried up, the necessary 200 millionman army is available, a worldwide numbering system ispossible because of the computer, and now the new worldorder is appearing.

Is it coincidental that all of these major prophecies pertain-ing to the last times are being fulfilled simultaneously?

Hardly!

Every one of these events has a directbearing on at least one of the majorprophecies of the Bible. And most all ofthem are unfolding within the next twomonths!

The signing of the United ReligionsCharter was a huge leap toward theprophesied one-world religion.

The Middle East Summit is dealingwith the issues that will trigger the finalseven-year period leading up to theBattle of Armageddon. The Summit isalso attempting to settle the status of

Jerusalem—the issue over which theBattle of Armageddon will be fought.

The Millennium World PeaceSummit, a gathering of 1,000 of theworld’s top religious leaders, will be an-other big step toward unifying thereligions of the world as we move rapidlyinto the New World Order. The goal ofthis meeting is a signed declaration forworld peace and the establishment of anongoing international advisory councilof religious and spiritual leaders, whichwill serve as a resource for the UnitedNations in its conflict prevention andresolution efforts. This summit of reli-gious leaders was suggested to KofiAnnan by none other than CNN’s TedTurner.

The Millennium Summit of theUnited Nations will boast the largestgathering of heads-of-state in the historyof the world. There are presently 188 na-tions on earth. It is expected that 160 ofthe leaders of these nations will convergeon the UN for the Millennium Summit.The goal of this meeting is to take aquantum leap forward into the structuresfor world government. Maurice Strongand Mikhail Gorbachev hope that theirEarth Charter will be accepted as the be-lief system for the emerging globalgovernmental structures.

Mikhail Gorbachev has decided totake his annual State of the WorldForum to New York, hoping to capitalizeon the unprecedented number of worldleaders that will have converged at theUN for the Millennium Summit. TheState of the World Forum’s stated pur-pose is “determining the course thatglobal governance should take.”

If Yasser Arafat unilaterally declaresPalestinian statehood on September 13,2000, many global observers are predict-ing war in the Middle East. Israel says shewill unilaterally draw the borders separat-ing Israel from Palestine. If thingshappen in this way, it will be interestingto watch what Israel does with theTemple Mount, especially since the Bibleprophesies the building of a temple onthe Temple Mount in the near future.

And then there’s the prophecy thatthreatens to dwarf all the prophecies—the prophesied war that will killone-third of the human race. It is en-tirely possible that this horrendous warwith its 2 billion fatalities could occur yetthis year.

Moses grimaced when he saw the whip of the Egyptian taskmaster snake across the back of theIsraeli slave. Anger welled up in him when he saw the angry stripe that was left across the Jewishback. At that moment, he made up in his mind that he and his people were leaving that place! Ittook forty years, but leave they did.

Upside down cross refers to PeterIn regard to V equaling U that was mentioned on your

Preterist/Futurist program, I would believe that to be true. Ifyou were to take a look at various Roman inscriptions, youwould find U’s written as V’s and J’s written as I’s.

A while back one of your callers mentioned an upside downcross on the Pope’s miter. This represents St. Peter, who askedto be crucified in the opposite direction than Jesus was, out ofrespect for Him. This representation on the Pope’s miter andsome of his chairs is simply the Roman Catholic affirmationthat they believe Peter to be the founder of the RomanCatholic Church.

UN Security Council explainedI am just learning about endtime events. Please help me

with an answer. Is the United Nations the World Council ofSecurity or is it another organization?

Reply: I think you are referring to the UN Security Council.The Security Council is the most powerful part of the UnitedNations. It is there that the critical decisions are made for theUN. There are five permanent members on the Security Counciland ten rotating members. The permanent members have vetopower over the decisions on the Security Council. The rotatingmembers have a vote but do not have veto power.

Mainstream media “missed the boat” on Chen’sspeech

You mentioned two things which I think are very impor-tant. First, the fact that the mainstream media missed the boatwhen reporting on the speech of the new Taiwanese President.Second, when asked by a caller about whether or not theAntichrist could be involved in the war with China, you saidthat you doubted it, but that rather he (the Antichrist) wouldbe waiting in the wings to pick up the pieces. Both of yourcomments are perhaps more related than even you thought atthe time.

I printed President Chen Shui-bian’s speech and read itwith much interest. The mainstream media reported correctly

on the last few paragraphs of the speech, but certainly glossedover the myriad references to democracy and the terse impli-cation that Taiwan had no intention, even to its ownextinction, of giving up its sovereignty. Notwithstanding, themedia’s reporting may serve the greater good. That is, shouldChina now decide to attack Taiwan before the United Statescan elect a President who might retaliate, the rest of the worldwould likely tend to be incensed at such a barbaric and un-warranted act. This would probably lead to consequences theMainland Chinese could not long endure.

With respect to and certainly related to the second issue, asyou know a Reuters article dated May 20, 2000, reported the“family of five nuclear weapons owners” in the UN gave “un-equivocal” commitment to eliminate nuclear weapons. Ofcourse there is no deadline. The lack of a deadline gives fuelto the waiting Antichrist, whoever and wherever he is, just asyou have suggested.

As a retired Air Force Officer and former Military War-gamer, I know that, should there be a nuclear exchangebetween or among nations as a result of a Chinese invasion ofTaiwan, the devastation would be virtually unfathomable.Scriptures tell us plainly that two-thirds of the population willremain after a cataclysmic war. If I did not believe in the wordof God, I would find that estimate highly optimistic. Even inthe absence of any type of prophecy, it is virtually a given thatsome charismatic leader would emerge to try to pull the rest ofthe world back together and into recovery. He would alsolikely be the one who became most vocal about the slow paceof nuclear weapon disarmament promised by the “NuclearFamily,” before such an exchange.

So, perhaps we should begin to watch the “potential”Antichrist candidates to see who barks the most and the loud-est about immediate and complete nuclear disarmament,knowing full-well it will not happen.

told them what was going to take place. Then He said, “Butwoe to them that are with child and to them that give suck inthose days!”

Reply: You are referring to the prophecy of Jesus in Matthew24:19. Jesus was specifically speaking about the people who wouldbe in Judea at the time of the Abomination of Desolation. Judea isthe area called the West Bank, which Israel is preparing to transferto Palestinian control.

In my opinion, Christians should not be overly concerned untilwe know for certain that we have entered the final seven years.Once we are positive, it might be prudent to prayerfully considerthe times when planning for a family.

How many resurrections are there?I was quite disappointed when I read your cover story “The

Year 2000 In Prophecy.” You wrote the next thing prophesiedin the Bible for the human race is the Second Coming of Jesusto earth.

What about I Corinthians 15:51-52 and I Thessalonians4:14-17? When He comes for His saints, meeting them in theair? Is not this the first phase of His Second Coming? Youwrote only about the second phase of His Second Coming,which is prophesied in Daniel and Revelation.

Are there not two phases of the Second Coming, each sep-arated by a period of seven years, the Great Tribulation? Thefirst phase, which we call “the Rapture,” has been neglected inthe teaching of the Second Coming, and many church mem-bers never hear it mentioned from their pulpits. To me it ismost important. It is the blessed hope and comfort for allChristians.

Please write another part of your story about the Rapture. Ithink it is most important for believers to know and look for-ward to. It must be the next great event to happen.

Reply: There is a difference of opinion among Bible students asto whether there are two phases to the Second Coming or one. It ismy opinion that the Bible does not teach the two phase theory. Tofully explain would take an entire article. However, there is onescripture that, in my opinion, totally eliminates the two phase the-ory.

In Revelation 20:4-5, John said, “…and I saw the souls of themthat were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word ofGod, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image,neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in theirhands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years. Butthe rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were fin-ished. This is the first resurrection.”

Notice that John was speaking of those who had been killed be-cause they would not worship the beast nor receive his mark. Theyobviously were on earth during the Great Tribulation. He says thatthese were raised from the dead and reigned with Christ. Then hesays, “This is the first resurrection.”

Since this is the first resurrection, there could not have been a res-urrection seven years before this time. If there had been aresurrection prior to this, then the resurrection of Revelation 20:4-5 would have been the second resurrection. For this reason andmany others, I believe that the two phase theory is unbiblical.

On June 26, 2000, I watchedas Bishop William Swingpicked up the pen, becom-ing the first signer of theconstitution of the United

Religions Initiative. The stated goal ofthe URI is to end religiously motivatedviolence and to create cultures of peace,justice and healing for the Earth and allliving beings.

It really doesn’t sound too bad to me.After all, I’m against violence. I’m forpeace, and for justice and for healing. Yeta very persistent nagging at the root ofmy belief system just wouldn’t leave mealone.

Really now! Did they seriously expectme, as a Christian, to validate Buddhists,Muslims, Indigenous worshipers of theGreat White Spirit, Wiccans (witches)and the myriad other pagan faiths thatwere represented at the signing? Werethey serious when they said I should de-nounce proselytizing (trying to convertpractitioners of other faiths toChristianity) and that I should respect allreligions as having value?

This goes against everything that theBible teaches. How about the uncompro-mising declaration of Jesus, “…for if ye

believe not that I am he, ye shall die inyour sins?” (John 8:24). And then thereis Acts 4:12, “Neither is there salvationin any other: for there is none othername under heaven given among men,whereby we must be saved.”

The United Religions was the con-tends that it is this kind ofnarrow-minded, literal interpretation ofscripture that has led to so much religiousconflict throughout the ages. Granted,there have been a lot of wars fought overreligious ideology. But I’ve never fought a

war over religion. I have never even at-tempted to force anyone to be aChristian. Furthermore, a true Christiannever would. The Bible itself teaches usto “…do violence to no man.”

Oh yes…one more thing! I washaunted by the prophecies in the Biblethat foretell a global government and aglobal religious system. I’ve been alarmedfor some time by the world’s blind accep-tance of the “World Community”intervening in the sovereign affairs of na-tions. Of course, the United Nations has

always disguised its emergence as a one-world government by referring to itself asthe “World Community” or the“International Community.” But afterthe violations of national sovereignty inHaiti, Bosnia, Yugoslavia and then EastTimor, it became obvious that what wehave on our hands is, in fact, a one-worldgovernment.

So the fulfillment of the global gov-ernment part of the prophecies is faradvanced at this present time. When Ibegan to read about the possibility of aUnited Religions organization thatwould act as a sister organization to theUN, I was filled with no small intrepida-tion.

And now here I was, sitting inCarnegie Music Hall in Pittsburgh,Pennsylvania, personally witnessing thebirth of the United Religions. To makemy misgivings worse, the signing of theUnited Religions constitution was pur-posely taking place on June 26th becausethe constitution of the United Nationshad been signed fifty-five years prior onthe very same day. Had I just witnessedthe planting of the second leg of the pol-itics and religion tandem spoken of inBible prophecy?

The ceremony began with a marchfrom the Carnegie Melon campus toCarnegie Music Hall approximatelythree blocks away. The Manipuri drum-mers from India set the cadence for themarchers with the methodical beating oftheir drums. Following behind were rep-resentatives of many religions, all dressedin the costumes of their particular reli-gious traditions. There were Baha’i,Buddhists, Jews, Muslims, Zoroastrians,Wiccans, Catholics, Protestants, Hindus,Hoa Hao, Taoists, Cao Dao, Sikh,Indigenous People and many others.

Once the procession entered CarnegieMusic Hall, the delegates made their wayto their respective places. The Manipuriworshipers, bare from the waist up, con-tinued to beat their drums until all wereseated.

After preliminary remarks were made,Mrs. Ny Gedong Oka of Indonesia ledthe Interfaith gathering in prayer. Sittingin the Lotus position on a stool, sheprayed in her native tongue and repeatedeach phrase in English. After a few min-utes of prayer, she then progressed deeperinto her meditation. “Om,” she prayed.

And then came the refrain from the

congregation, “Om.” Again she intoned, “Om.”This time the refrain from the dele-

gates was a little louder, “Om.”Back and forth the response continued

until the echo of the Hindu prayer washeard throughout Carnegie Music Hall.It appeared that most of the delegates,whether Hindu or not, entered into theHindu refrain. It was definitely an un-precedented Interfaith moment. As forme, my hair bristled on the back of myneck as supposed Christians slid easilyinto the act of pagan worship.

Then came the phone call from theUnited Nations. The UN official ex-tended the United Nations’congratulations on the birth of theUnited Religions. The call was amplifiedover the PA system for all to hear. It wasobvious that a very close relationship ex-ists between the United Nations and theUnited Religions.

When the crowning moment of sign-ing the United Religions Constitutionarrived, Bishop William Swing, head ofthe United Religions Initiative, was af-forded the honor of being the first signer.Other attendees then added their signa-tures to the document.

Once the signing was complete, en-thusiastic applause erupted from the

delegates. From a balcony a Jewish rabbisounded on the shofar in Interfaith cele-bration. The United Religions was born!

And all of this without mentioningthe name of Jesus one time!

The birth of the United Religions waswebcast live around the world. A chatroom was available on the Internet sothat people could ask questions duringthe signing ceremonies. Endtime staffmember Dan Barkley visited with thewoman who was operating the chat roomfor the United Religions. Noticing thatshe was wearing an unusual headband,Dan asked what its significance might be.She informed him that the insignias onthe headband indicated that she was aWiccan high priestess, in other words—awitch.

It was absolutely beyond belief! Awitch was running the chat room for thebirth of the United Religions?! Can youbelieve it?!

Why would the European Union placesuch prestige and reverence over a kingwho has been in the grave for over 1,100years? The fact is, the European Unionhas chosen King Charlemagne as itsGeorge Washington. The heads side onthe first coin minted by the EU in 1987bears the image of Charles the Great.

It is critical to understand that theEuropean Union is recreating the HolyRoman Empire. It is likely that its kingwill ultimately become the Antichrist.Let’s take a closer look.

Half a kingThe history books record that Charles

Magna wasn’t all that magna. The un-publicized fact is, Charles was only half ofa king. Charles, you see, had a partner.He shared his authority. His partner wasthe pope.

Back in the eighth century,Charlemagne wanted to bear rule overthe known world of his time, but he did-n’t wield enough power. Interestingly,the pope of the Roman Catholic Churchwanted the same. As the vicar of the Sonof God on earth, the pope felt that heshould rightly be in charge of the world’saffairs. Neither Charlemagne nor thepope was powerful enough by himself toassume the desired role of authority, sothe two of them cut a deal. Pope Leo IIIcrowned Charlemagne as emperor of theHoly Roman Empire. They would sharethe power. And so it was born.

Understanding the source ofCharlemagne’s shared power status, whyin the world would the European Unionplace all of its marbles into this chintzyhalf a basket? Why choose the King ofHearts and not the King of Diamonds?After all, Julius Caesar ruled over thesame territory, but didn’t have to split hisauthority with anybody. Why not putJulius Caesar’s image on their coins?

The answer is simple. It’s because theVatican is inexorably involved in thecreation of the European Union and, defacto, the re-creation of the Holy RomanEmpire.

Understanding the Holy RomanEmpire and its leadership structure is themost important insight in the Biblefor recognizing the Antichrist andFalse Prophet.

Holy Roman Empire in prophecyIn order to grasp the staggering impli-

cations of the EU’s formation, let’s lookat the prophecy. It’s found in DanielChapter 2.

Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, hada dream. Daniel recounted his dream andthen provided the interpretation. Theactual dream is recorded in Daniel 2:31-35…the interpretation in verses 36-45.

The dream depicted a great imagewhose head was of gold, breast and armsof silver, belly and thighs of brass, legs ofiron, and feet of iron mingled with clay.Then a stone, which was cut out withouthands, smote the image upon the feet. Itbroke the iron, the brass, the clay, the sil-ver and the gold into pieces. AsNebuchadnezzar watched, the stone thatsmote the image grew until it became agreat mountain and filled the wholeearth.

The interpretation: Five world empires

In Daniel 2:36-45, the meaning of thedream was revealed. Daniel said to theking, “Thou art this head of gold” (v. 38).Then he explained that, afterNebuchadnezzar’s kingdom, anotherwould rise which would be inferior to hiskingdom. After that kingdom, yet a thirdkingdom would arise. This third king-dom was represented by the belly andthighs of brass.

To fully understand the importance ofthis prophecy of Nebuchadnezzar’simage, carefully notice the key phrase inverse 39, “which shall bear rule over allthe earth.” We know that many nationshave existed from the time of Danieluntil now. However, only five empireshave existed since Daniel’s time whichhave ruled the entire world. They are theempires depicted in this image ofNebuchadnezzar’s dream.

Nebuchadnezzar’s Babylon ruled theknown world of its day and was the headof gold. In the days of Belshazzar, the lastking of Babylon, the hand of God wroteon his palace wall foretelling that hiskingdom would fall that night and thathis kingdom would be replaced by thekingdom of the Medes and the Persians(Daniel 2:40). Both history and the Bible(Daniel 5:30-31) tell us that thisdid occur.

The summit’s organizer is Bawa Jainof the Interfaith Center of New York.

The intent to establish a new globalspiritual order has been in the works atthe UN for years. Credit for coming upwith the brilliant idea for this summit,however, has been bestowed upon TedTurner. Bawa Jain related the insidestory: “Ted Turner said to the Secretary-General (Kofi Annan), ‘If you want peacein the world you have to bring togetherreligious leaders at the UN and get themto sign a declaration.’”

Cardinals, rabbis, Islamic imams and“living-god-gurus” will be in atten-dance. The Tibetan Buddhist leader, theDalai Lama, is expected to skip theevent because his presence might ag-gravate the Chinese.

Will the summit have a genuine im-pact? One skeptic, Barbara Smoker,former president of the National SecularSociety, notes the role religion has hadin virtually every conflict in history.“They have a lot to answer for,” shesaid. “They won’t have much influenceon the majority of believers, who aremore motivated by ingrained emotionengendered by religion than by whattheir leaders say.”

the arms and breasts of silver. This em-pire dominated the world for over 200years, from the night that Babylon fell in539 BC until it was defeated by theGrecians under Alexander the Great in331 BC.

The Grecian Empire is the third worldempire of King Nebuchadnezzar’s image.The Grecian Empire is symbolized by thebelly and thighs of brass. Alexander theGreat, the “King of Clubs,” conqueredthe entire world by the time he reachedhis early thirties. Greece was the domi-nant force in the world for 134 yearsuntil defeated by the Romans in 197 BC.

Then began the rule of the RomanEmpire which was symbolized by the“legs of iron” (v. 40). The Roman Empirestill ruled the world at the time of JesusChrist. That’s the reason there wereRoman soldiers present in Israel at thecrucifixion of Jesus. During the life ofChrist, the entire world was under trib-ute to the Roman Empire. This empirecontinued for 500 years until it decayedfrom within and was overrun by barbar-ians.

The prophecy states that one moreempire would rise which would rule over“all the earth.” Until this last empire,each section of the image in the king’sdream had a completely different metalfrom the previous section. From the headof gold, to the arms and breasts of silver,to the belly and thighs of brass, and tothe legs of iron, each is a total change ofmetals. The feet, however, consist of twoelements — iron and clay. The mixtureindicates that the element of iron (theRoman Empire) from the legs would sur-vive; however, another element (theclay) would be mixed in.

After the Roman Empire came an-other empire, which was related, butdifferent. This latest empire was calledthe Holy Roman Empire.

The Holy Roman EmpireIn order to understand this part of the

prophecy, you must understand the dif-ference between the Roman Empire andthe Holy Roman Empire. They are notthe same. The Roman Empire existedduring the time of Christ, and ceased toexist around 300 AD. The Holy RomanEmpire was founded five hundred yearslater in 800 AD.

From the time of Charlemagne untilnow, the Holy Roman Empire has risen

and fallen several times. As previouslyexplained, the Holy Roman Empire hasalways been ruled by two men, a politicalleader and a spiritual leader. The lastworld government, which is now emerg-ing, will also be ruled by two men. Thepolitical leader will be the Antichrist,and the spiritual leader will be the FalseProphet (Revelation 19:19-20).

The feet of iron and clayNote that the iron element of the for-

mer Roman Empire remained, but thatthe new clay element, the RomanCatholic Church, had been added.Remember that the image in the king’sdream had feet of iron mixed with clay. Itis easy to see that the clay represents theRoman Catholic Church. The HolyRoman Empire has always been a unionof church and state.

The passage also states that “...theyshall not cleave one to another, even asiron is not mixed with clay.” This passagehas been explicitly fulfilled. Each timethe Holy Roman Empire has been estab-lished, it has succeeded for only a shorttime. Each time, after reaching worlddomination, the pope and the emperor

began to quarrel over which one betweenthem should be the final authority. Thepopes have always held that “spiritual”should rule over “temporal.” On theother hand, the emperors have insistedthat they should have the last word.Because of the quarreling, their allianceseventually disintegrated. It has certainlybeen as the scriptures said: the iron willnot cleave to the clay!

The most important element ofNebuchadnezzar’s dream is the “stone.”The stone, which was cut out of themountain, rolled down and smote theimage upon the feet. The stone repre-sents the kingdom of God (v. 44). Thefeet of the image represent the HolyRoman Empire! This illustrates to us thatthe Holy Roman Empire will be in exis-tence when Jesus returns to establish Hiskingdom.

Political leader and spiritualleader

This prophecy gives us a crystal clearunderstanding that the kingdom of theAntichrist will be a modern-day HolyRoman Empire. And remember, therehave always been two leaders in this em-

pire, a political leader and a spiritualleader. The political leader has alwaysbeen from Europe and the spiritual leaderhas always been the pope of the RomanCatholic Church.

In the book of Revelation we have thesame thing. The two leaders are calledthe beast (the Antichrist) and the FalseProphet. We know for certain that who-ever is pope at the time of the Antichrist,he will be the False Prophet.

Let’s pause here for a moment. Thislast statement can be offensive to somepeople. The goal here is not to offend.We must point out that Catholicprophecy books teach the very samething. They teach that an evil pope iscoming. Both Catholic prophecies andthe Bible are seeing the very sameevents. There are many Catholic peoplewho believe that the next pope will bethe prophesied “evil pope.” Time willtell.

Summarizing the prophecyThe Bible prophesies an endtime re-

vival of a world order with the structureof the historical Holy Roman Empire. Itwill be a union between a political leaderof Europe and the Vatican. Charlemagnewas the first leader of this fifth worlddominating empire.

When the political entity called theEuropean Union makes Charlemagnetheir George Washington, then, myfriends, it appears that you and I are wit-nessing the prophesied revival of theHoly Roman Empire.

Others see it tooThe reason the French playing card

companies assigned the hearts suit toCharlemagne was apparently because ofhis tie with the Vatican. The suit ofhearts was more symbolic of the churchthan spades, diamonds or clubs. The“holy” part of the Holy Roman Empire isuniversally recognized. It was recognizedby the French in the fifteenth century,and it is recognized today as theEuropean Union assigns Charlemagnefirst place among kings.

Most of the prophecy world fails torecognize that there are five parts toNebuchadnezzar’s image. It is taught thathis image has four sections, the fourthbeing the Roman Empire. This is whyyou will not find the information writtenin this article in many other places.

Does anyone else recognize the emer-gence of a modern-day Holy RomanEmpire and Charlemagne? TheEconomist magazine does though it is nota religious publication. Quite to the con-trary, the Economist is known as theperiodical of kings and presidents. It isowned by the Rothschilds, one of themost influential families in the entireworld. A section in each edition is called“Charlemagne.” It is a feature article ona person who in some major way is con-tributing to European unity. The May 27,2000 column, for instance, began by pro-claiming that there are a few countries in

Europe that are, in fact, “unreservedlyproud of their place in the EuropeanUnion, that look forward to further sac-rifices of sovereignty and view the eurocurrency as an all around success, thatapplaud publicly the work of theEuropean Commission, and that wantfrom Europe only more of the same.”

There are some in Great Britain whoalso see an emerging Holy RomanEmpire. They don’t like what they see,however. Consequently, they are able tosee the developments more clearly.Daniel Johnson, opinion writer for theUK’s Daily Telegraph, recently went so

far as to call a spade a spade, or rather, ifyou will excuse me, a heart a heart.Speaking on German Foreign MinisterJoschka Fischer’s plan for a federalizedEuropean Union, he summarized by writ-ing, “Fundamentally, it still dreams of aGermanic Holy Roman Empire.”

Eleven of the fifteen EU states nowhave the same currency, the euro. TheGerman deutchmark will cease to existin July 2002. The Italian lira is leaving.The French franc as well.

Did you know that there is a Vaticanofficial present at all high level EU meet-ings? Interesting.

Working the planThere is a definite, intentional plan to

revive the Holy Roman Empire. And fur-ther, this is specifically prophesied in theBible. Bill Clinton just received theCharlemagne Prize because he hasbought into the vision that there shouldbe a united Europe. It was specificallymentioned at the giving of the awardthat Clinton had contributed to the uni-fication of Europe through his leadershipin the Bosnia conflict and in the Kosovocrisis.

When the revival is accomplished, itwill probably not be called the HolyRoman Empire. It will, however, be justthat. And out of this union will come theAntichrist.

In his acceptance speech Clintonurged EU members not to leave Russiaout. This is highly significant, becausethe prophecies indicate that Russia willbe very much involved with the endtimeone-world government and the Battle ofArmageddon.

During the 1,000 years of the reign ofthe Holy Roman Empire, most all ofEurope was Roman Catholic. If the popesaid it, then that’s the way it went. Hegave his blessing to Europe’s politicalleaders because temporal leaders wereneeded to administer the Holy RomanEmpire. But the pope always felt that hewas the ultimate authority.

Bill Clinton receiving theCharlemagne Prize from the EU shouldbe a signal to us. We should take a closerlook at the EU, and what exactly is beingcreated. They are fulfilling Bibleprophecy, but they haven’t a clue. It’samazing to look at the prophecies of theBible, to know what’s coming and thento see it fulfilled before your very eyes.

We have been teach-ing on the revival of theHoly Roman Empire formany years. In the begin-ning, we didn’t knowthere was a CharlemagnePrize, and we didn’t knowa U.S. president would bea recipient. It was neverimagined that theEuropean CommonMarket’s first ceremonialcoin would bear theimage of Charlemagne.All we had to go on werethe prophecies of theBible.

Now all the pieces ofthe puzzle are coming to-gether. The prophesiedendtime revival of theHoly Roman Empire isdeveloping very rapidly.It is happening far fromU.S. soil, but it will, ulti-mately, come to affect usall.

Reforming the United Nations

Baxter: There is a plan to reform theUN Security Council and perhaps addmembers. I also think there is a lot ofsentiment toward some kind of change inthe veto power in order for the UN tofunction in global governance. Can youcomment on those issues for us?

Strong: Some of the fundamentalchanges are, of course, the ones you men-tioned. The Security Council is theorgan of the UN that makes the basic de-cisions on interventions in conflictsituations. The deployment of theseforces is done to try and meet the mainreasons why the UN was created — toinsure world peace and security. It can-not function, except by majority vote.Furthermore, five of the members eachhave a veto. These five are the originalpermanent members. They were chosenfrom among the victors in WWII. Thismeans, even if you have a majority vote,

you cannot proceed with the action ifone of the five permanent members votesagainst it. That veto has made it impossi-ble for the UN to act in many situationswhere it was needed. It was particularlytrue during the Cold War. One of thebenefits of the demise of the Cold War isthat there have been many situationssince then in which it has become possi-ble to move. One of the anachronisms isthat two of the political and economicpowers that have now emerged in theworld are Germany and Japan, but theyare not among the permanent members.Neither is India or Brazil. Some of the

major countries of the Third World arenot permanent members, yet you couldsay that some of the countries that aremembers, like Britain and France, are nolonger political and economic powers.They are still important countries, butnot as important as they were. So thepresent Security Council does not reflectthe real world of geopolitics as it is today.That makes it more and more difficult forthe Security Council to make decisionsthat can be credible and accepted. Weneed a significant revision of the SecurityCouncil, but it has been impossible so farto achieve.

Strong Recommendation toChange Security Council

Sax: How do you achieve that revi-sion? Do you add members to theSecurity Council that would have vetopower? That would seem to be counter-productive. And how do you look at anation like France and say, “We want youto step down?”

Strong: One of the problems is exactlythat. It is very hard for those who enjoyprivileges that they won at an earlierstage to recognize that their role in theworld has changed. Britain and Francestill have very, very importantroles in the world, but certainlynot the same as they were. So ex-pansion of the Security Council toreflect the current situation in theworld in which the power struc-ture has significantly changed andbroadened out is essential. Thismeans perhaps a larger SecurityCouncil, but not so large as tomake it inefficient. People are sug-gesting 22 or 23 members—notjust the addition of Germany andJapan. Virtually everybody agreesthat those two nations should beon there. But you cannot thenomit some of the major countriesin the developing world. After all,the developing world representssome 75% of both the number of nationsof the world and the number of people.By any democratic principle there shouldobviously be some recognition of that inthe structure of the UN, and in particu-lar, its Security Council. So if you bringGermany and Japan in, you’ve got tobring in a number of others from the de-veloping world to create that balance.Remember, right now four of the fivepermanent members with veto power arefrom the industrialized world. OnlyChina represents the developing world.Under conditions like that, an organiza-tion is bound to lose credibility and,ultimately, its effectiveness. It has to bebrought to a situation where it reflectsreal world geopolitics.

Baxter: Is that going to happen, and ifso, how long will it take?

Strong: People have recognized theneed for some time, but they have not

been able to agree. What will ultimatelyhappen, de facto, is if the SecurityCouncil doesn’t gradually change, it willgradually become less important.Countries, even the U.S., do not use theSecurity Council to sanction all of theirinternational actions. Increasingly, ac-tions are taken unilaterally, or in contextof NATO or a smaller group outside theUN. The Security Council is extremelyimportant, but it will not remain thatway unless it is reformed. And there is noeffective substitute for it. You must havea global organization that reflects the re-alities of the world it serves if it is goingto be effective.

Rethinking veto power?

Baxter: Let’s talk about the veto powerfor a moment, Maurice. I know this issuper-sensitive. Is there any possibilitythat the members of the UN SecurityCouncil would voluntarily consent toturn loose of the veto?

Strong: I think that it is likely that anymove to reform the Security Councilthat is finally accepted will involve somemodification of the veto—perhaps by ex-tending it to countries that don’t have it.This again would make it more reflectiveof the real world. Secondly, perhaps hav-ing it apply only in certain limitedcircumstances. Or perhaps more thanone country would have to join in theveto to make it effective. Or providingsome basis, like you do in American pres-idential politics, where the veto could beoverridden in the General Assembly,which is like the Congress, by a two-

thirds majority. I am not suggestingwhich of those might be the best. I amsimply saying that some change in theexisting veto situation is absolutely es-sential if we are going to get agreementon Security Council reform.

Toward Enforceable Global Law

Baxter: Tell us about the InternationalCriminal Court Statute of Rome thatwas adopted in July of 1998. It was a bigdeal at the time, and then all of a suddenit has faded into the background. We arenot hearing anything more about it.Where does that stand?

Strong: Well, it hasn’t been fullyratified and none of these agree-ments can come into play untilthey are ratified. As you know, theU.S. itself does not adhere to it.Sometimes the internationalprocesses, like national legislativeprocesses, take time. This is partlybecause they are controversial. Iam not completely sure of its cur-rent state. It isn’t yet fullyfunctioning — that I know. It cer-tainly will function. Whether ornot the U.S. ever adheres to it is avery important issue, becausewithout the U.S. it will be cer-tainly a good deal less effective.

Sovereignty-Loss Double-Speak

Baxter: The reason the United Statesdid not vote for the InternationalCriminal Court, we were one of theseven that did not, was because PresidentClinton apparently felt that it infringedon American sovereignty in some re-spects. That is also the reason we havesuch a difficult time with turning loose ofour veto power on the UN SecurityCouncil. I had a conversation withSecretary of State James Baker in 1993just a month or so after he left power. Wewere discussing the emergence of globalgovernance and the difference betweenglobal governance and one-world gov-ernment. He said to me, “We have vetopower on the UN Security Council, andtherefore, that retains the sovereignty ofthe United States.” Is it accurate to saythat once you tamper with that vetopower that you actually are starting tosurrender sovereignty?


“The Security Councilis extremely important,but it will not remainthat way unless it isreformed. And there

is no effectivesubstitute for it.”

Strong: No. Let’s be clear about this.No nation has to surrender sovereignty.No nation can certainly force the U.S. tosurrender sovereignty. But it is in theU.S. interest in many cases to make thatdecision. On issues that affect its well-being and its future, it can only acteffectively in concert with others.Therefore, as an act, as an assertion, of itssovereignty, it agrees to be bound by cer-tain international agreements. That isnot an abdication of sovereignty. That isan exercise of sovereignty, collectivelywith others, in areas where it cannot bemade effective unilaterally. There is a bigmisunderstanding in many quartersabout that. Nobody can force the U.S. tosurrender sovereignty. No one can over-ride U.S. sovereignty. It can only besubjected to international agreementswhen the U.S. decides voluntarily toagree. Now that isn’t an abdication ofsovereignty. It is an exercise of sover-eignty.

Baxter: Maurice, how wouldthat apply to what just happenedin Yugoslavia or to SaddamHussein? Since they don’t haveveto power they don’t enjoy thatsame privilege. Is that true?

Strong: That’s right. That istrue. The only powers that dohave the privilege are, of course,the five permanent members —the Soviet Union—now Russia,the U.S., China, France andBritain.

Can Anyone Kill the Veto?

Baxter: Who will ultimately beable to make the decision if there is to bethe setting aside of the veto in somecases? Does the General Assembly havethe power to do this or does it take theUN Security Council to do this?

Strong: It is built into the Charter ofthe United Nations. The SecurityCouncil itself would be the primaryforum in which that is negotiated, but itwill require an act of the GeneralAssembly to actually make that change.Then, if it is a fundamental charterchange, it will need to get the endorse-ment of the parliaments of each separatecountry. It is a significant and difficult

process. That is one of the reasons wehaven’t had the change agreed to yet.

Baxter: So what we are saying here is,as long as any of the five permanentmembers don’t want to surrender theirsovereignty, they could veto that action.Is that correct?

Strong: Well, they can’t veto the con-stitutional action directly through theirexercise of Security Council veto, but, defacto, unless a majority of those membersagree, the change will not occur. Nowthere will be pressures operating on all ofthem, which will help to influence themin deciding to agree on measures whichinvolve some change in their own situa-tion. U.S. has little to fear from this,because in the foreseeable future there isno question that the U.S. will always bea dominant if not the dominant power.The resistance will come from countriesthat may lose power or who don’t want

another country to become a permanentmember. For example, India andPakistan as you know are in a constantstate of tension these days bordering onwar. India would be a logical member ofthe Security Council if permanent mem-berships were increased. Pakistan,however, wouldn’t like that. If Germanyis added to France and Britain, why notItaly? In Latin America, Brazil is thebiggest single country, and logicallyshould become a member. However,other countries, while friendly to Brazil,would be unhappy if only Brazil becamea member. So it will be difficult toachieve agreement. However, if agree-

ment is not achieved, there will be theevolution of another way of making deci-sions that the Security Council neverdoes outside of the formal structure of theSecurity Council. It could well bethrough a committee of the GeneralAssembly. I am not advocating this. I amjust saying that history tells us once insti-tutions cease to reflect the politicalrealities in which they have to exist, theywill be bypassed or marginalized.

Baxter: I understand. It’s obviouslynot an easy situation when you get rightdown to it.

Global spirituality at the “Baca”

Baxter: Maurice, I have read an articlesome time back in one of the magazinesabout a ranch that you own in Coloradothat is sort of a Mecca for global spiritual-ity. Can you tell us about it?

Strong: I was a partner in a com-pany that owned a very largeranch, and we bought a piece ofland out of that ranch on thefoothills of the San de CristoMountains, a beautiful part ofSouthern Colorado. They call itthe San Luis Valley. It is one of thelargest mountain valleys in theworld. Beautiful mountains sur-round it, and at the base of thosemountains is a community we callthe Baca. It is centered on the vil-lage of Crestone. My wife,Hannah, in particular, through herManitou Foundation, has madeavailable land for various philo-sophical and spiritual communitiesto come out there and develop

their own thing. It is not a homogenizingecumenical community, but they comeout expressing their own particular tradi-tions. They are Hindus, Zen Buddhists,Tibetan Buddhists, the Carmelite Orderof the Roman Catholic Church—awhole series of spiritual organizations.Most of them are rather traditional, doingtheir own thing, giving courses to theirpeople and conducting retreats; but theninteracting with each other in a commu-nity setting. That is true ecumenismbecause it is not a forced ecumenism. It isone that happens simply because theyhave a common interest in a communitythey all love and enjoy living in.

Baxter: So this has proven to be a pop-ular thing?

Strong: It is. It’s like every community.It’s a real world. There are lots of littlecontroversies and pressures, but on thewhole it has evolved into a situationwhere people of various religious andspiritual traditions — however they maydiffer with each other — learn how todeal with their differences in a friendly,cooperative way. They also learn to ap-preciate the community in which theyare all living, and learn to work togetherin that community.

How the UN Sees China-Taiwan

Baxter: Let’s talk about Chinaand the crisis that is presentlybrewing over Taiwan. You rubshoulders with people who arevery much involved in world af-fairs. What is the feeling here? Weare reading articles that are quitealarming. China is threatening toshed “all of their blood” to reuniteTaiwan with the mainland. TheUnited States says that any inva-sion of Taiwan by China would beobserved with the gravest of con-sequences. What is your take onthis situation? Is this a real dangerto us?

Strong: There is no questionthat it is a danger. Let us look firstat the common elements. Thegood news is that both China’s—the onewe call Taiwan, which is a Republic ofChina and the People’s Republic ofChina, the larger China — have longagreed that the two countries are oneand need to be reunited. They have dis-agreed as to when and how. The UnitedStates has endorsed that position. Thecurrent tensions exist because there hasbeen a movement in Taiwan (I’ll call itthat because most people know it asTaiwan), and particularly with the elec-tion of the new president, to break thatpattern of one single China. There aretwo separate governments at the presenttime. The underlying assumption has al-ways been that ultimately these two willunite. If you break that, you unleash ob-vious tensions. Feelings run very, veryhigh in China and indeed in Taiwan thatthe two countries will ultimately be

united. If China begins to see thatTaiwan is going to break out of this pat-tern of agreed co-existence as one nationwith two sets of governments, then youcan expect that the most dangerous ofsituations could arise. It will evoke verystrong feelings. We have already seensigns of this in China. We should not kidourselves. If Taiwan decides to go it aloneand decides to assert its independence,there will clearly be a very real prospectthat China will react even militarily.

Sax: Will the United Nations viewthis as an internal conflict within a na-tion or an external conflict between twonations?

Strong: No, the United Nations posi-tion will be quite clear. There is only oneChina in the United Nations. As I men-tioned, the United States and most otherworld powers recognize China as thePeople’s Republic of China and do notrecognize Taiwan as a separate nation, al-though they recognize it as an importanteconomic entity and have relationshipswith it. Even China has economic rela-tionships and trade with Taiwan, butwithin the United Nations the positionis quite, quite clear. There is only oneChina.

Is the Next Stop at the Top?

Baxter: Will Kofi Annan be a one-term Secretary General?

Strong: I hope not. I believe he is well

on the way to being the best SecretaryGeneral the UN has ever had. I thinkthat alone should give the member na-tions of the UN the confidence to givehim another term. He is not seeking itand he is not hungry for it, but he is thebest man for it.

Baxter: The next question is loaded. Ihave heard rumors that Maurice Strongmay some day be Secretary General ofthe United Nations. Any possibilities?

Strong: No, I have never made it acondition of my service to the UnitedNations that I be Secretary General. I amnot at the age, let’s be clear, at which that

is practical, if it ever was. I havebeen always flattered if my namehas been mentioned once in awhile, but that is not a realisticpossibility. It is not part of my am-bition structure. I am interested inserving the United Nations andmost of all serving the purposes forwhich the UN was created. I amvery, very happy to do that inwhatever capacity, but that capac-ity does not include the SecretaryGeneralship. I am fully supportiveof, and I work for, and I very muchadmire Kofi Annan. I am quite abit older than him, and it would bequite illogical for me to pretendany sense of wanting that job atthis stage of my life. I just want toserve the UN and serve under KofiAnnan just as long as that is feasi-

ble for me.

“Taiwanese President Hits RightNotes!”

“Tensions Ease as New LeaderDownplays Independence!”

These headlines, and scores ofsimilar ones, appeared innewspapers worldwide theday following Chen Shui-bian’s May 20 inauguration

speech. Reports flooded the newswiresthat Chen satisfied the preconditionsBeijing had set for the new Taiwanesepresident. President Jiang Zemin andPremier Zhu Rongji of communistMainland China made it quite clearthere would be “dire consequences” if thenew Taiwanese president said the “wrongthings” in his speech.

There was concern across the globethat Chen would make overt claims ofsovereignty; a tune Beijing did not wantto hear. There was fear he would poundaway at the virtues of Taiwan’s freedemocracy over Beijing’s hard line com-munism. Many worried Chen wouldcompare Taiwan’s human rights record toChina’s questionable performance in thisarea. But most of all, there was dread thathe would count two, two, yes twoChina’s instead of one.

But the worldwide media carefully lis-tened to Chen’s speech and in it theyfound beautiful music. The vote is unan-imous. Chen sings on-key, China iscontent, tensions ease and time marcheson.

If it were only true. The ugly facts are that the Taiwanese

President Hit The Wrong Notes, and

Tensions Have Escalated as New LeaderPlayed Up Independence. You see, Jiangand Zhu were listening to the samespeech.

Beijing’s PreconditionsChina’s leaders had set forth specific

criteria for the so-called president of itsrenegade province. They made it abun-dantly clear that unless Chen Shui-bianhit these notes there would be war. Here

were some of the preconditions:First, democracy. China hates the de-

velopment of democracy. They, ofcourse, are a brutal communistic dicta-torship. The two ideologies don’t mixwell. “Chinese Democracy” is an oxy-moron, and a potentially explosive oneat that. On May 20th, China did notwant to hear a lot about democracy.

Next, sovereignty. China adamantlydenies the sovereignty of Taiwan, and

Reunification on China’s terms. Chinahad publicly stated that if sincere andspeedy moves toward reunification werenot begun, that in itself would be causefor war.

Finally, there must be one and onlyone China. There would be no negotia-tion, nor compromise, on Beijing’sOne-China policy, and Taiwan must ac-cept this One-China policy before thereunification process can even begin.China promised “the most dire conse-quences” if Chen Shui-bian did notpledge his support for Beijing’s One-China policy in his inaugural speech.

Remember, three days before Taiwan’sMarch 18th elections, China stated thatthe election of the pro-independencecandidate, Chen Shui-bian, would al-most certainly mean war. In the face ofthese threats and intimidation the peo-ple went forth and elected Chen. OnMay 20, he spoke for the first time aspresident, and according to every news-paper in the world he delivered amasterful speech, allaying Beijing’s con-cerns and the threat of war.

Again, that’s what was reported. Butwhat did Chen say?

“Taiwan Stands Up”Like nails down the chalkboard

Beijing was treated to the dreaded word“democracy” 27 times. They took ten in-your-face hits on “human rights” andseveral not-so-subtle proclamations ofTaiwanese sovereignty. And two,count’em, two China’s instead of one.

Chen’s speech was appropriately enti-tled Taiwan Stands Up. Here are a fewrepresentative quotes:

He called his election “an epochallandmark for Chinese communitiesaround the world” which have “clearlyshown the world that the fruits of free-dom and democracy are not easily comeby.”

“(We) have overcome intimidationwith hope, and conquered fear withfaith,” he proclaimed—a clear responseto China’s bullying tactics before theelections and before his inaugurationspeech.

“(I will) devote all my efforts, under-standing and courage to assuming the

heavy responsibility of this country’s fu-ture,” he said. Take note — he calledTaiwan a country, not a renegadeprovince.

“The government exists for all thepeople and serves all the people.” Inother words, Beijing is a ruthless totali-tarian system that brutally oppresses itspeople.

“We will abide by the UniversalDeclaration of Human Rights… (andbring Taiwan) back into the interna-

tional human rights system.” Our broth-ers in Beijing who mowed down 2,000students in Tiananmen Square ten yearsago, he implied, will not.

Does this sound as though Chen al-layed China’s concerns?

And how did he do on their One-China policy? Not so well. His onlyreference to it was this: “While uphold-ing the principles of democracy andparity, building upon the existing foun-dations, and constructing conditions forcooperation through goodwill, we be-lieve that the leaders on both sidespossess enough wisdom and creativity tojointly deal with the question of a futureOne China.” In other words, lip service.

He continued: “I must abide by theConstitution, maintain the SOVER-EIGNTY, dignity and security of ourCOUNTRY, and ensure the well-beingof all citizens.”

This is what the international mediacalled downplaying independence, hit-ting the right notes and easing tensions.

“Long live freedom and democracy!”Chen concluded. “Long live the peopleof Taiwan!”

tude.” It was a “disappointment,” theysaid. “The Taiwan leader intended toseparate Taiwan from China.”Apparently Beijing read the speech itself,not what the newspapers wrote about it.

A few days later, Chen’s feisty and out-spoken Vice President, Annette Lu,added fuel to the growing fire. She pub-licly snubbed the One-China policy asnothing more than “a political spell” thatBeijing has tried to cast on Taiwan.

P.S. She stressed that she was speakingpersonally, “not as someone authorizedby President Chen.”

Actions speak loudWhat is China doing in reaction to

Chen’s speech? The American ForeignPolicy Council sees a number of worri-some signs that they are preparing toinvade Taiwan and go to war with theUnited States if necessary. Among thesesigns was China’s purchase of 24 deadlynuclear-capable anti-ship missiles fromRussia. They are designed to destroy U.S.aircraft carriers.

The AFPC and Hong Kong’s SouthChina Morning Post are both reportingthat Chinese military leaders are growingincreasingly impatient with theirPresident Jiang Zemin and Premier ZhuRongji. They themselves have begunstepping up calls to invade Taiwan.People’s Liberation Army (PLA) gener-als are presenting petitions written inblood by soldiers and officers who arepledging that they are ready to “sacrificetheir lives for the cause of liberatingTaiwan.”

The PLA’s daily newspaper declaredthat the separatists in Taiwan’s new gov-ernment would be engulfed in a “sea offire.” A top PLA official warned thatBeijing would be forced to take resolvedmeasures to achieve reunification ifTaiwan shunned national unification.

The Chinese navy has begun test fir-ing offensive missiles in the East ChinaSea north of Taiwan. They are reportingthat they have successfully tested a newweapon capable of shooting down in-coming cruise missiles at low altitude.

One week before Chen’s speech,Taiwan’s coast guard seized a Chineseship loaded with spy equipment. The fivecrewmembers claimed not to be spies.They said they had been fishing. No fish-ing equipment or fish were found onboard. What the coast guard did find

were night-vision cameras andTaiwanese maps. The film seized fromthe men showed photos of military facil-ities and sentries deployed on theoutlying islands of Penghu and Wuchiu,Taiwan’s first line of defense in case ofMainland Chinese attack. It was laterconfirmed that four of the five men ar-rested worked for China’s state securityministry.

Chen “embraces” One-China?On June 28, Chen Shui-bian made a

surprise announcement of sorts, sayingthat he now embraced “a One-Chinapolicy.” This was big news. Would it dif-fuse the escalating tensions andmovements toward war? The mediachimed yes. Beijing said no. It turns outthat President Chen’s One-China is notPresident Jiang’s One-China. “Eachside,” Chen said, “could have its own in-terpretation.”

No it can’t. The One-China policy, defined by

Beijing, states there is but one China,Taiwan is part of that one China and theonly legitimate government of China is

the communist-led People’s Republic ofChina in Beijing. From this positionthere can be no discussion and no nego-tiation, and unless Taiwan accepts thisposition, and soon, war is promised. Hisstatement was denounced in China, aswell as by his own people, and has servedto exacerbate the growing tensions.

Neither side has changed its policy.There is no reconciliation, no talks andno signs of peaceful reunification.

Gertz & Scarborough FareIt is expected that any armed conflict

between China and Taiwan will involvethe United States, and it will not bepretty. The latest Chinese spy scandal,which came to light on June 21, shouldnot be taken lightly. Rowan Scarboroughand Bill Gertz from the Washington Timesbroke a story on the sale of a seven-storybuilding overlooking the Pentagon toXinhua, the official Chinese governmentnews agency.

“Specialists in Chinese affairs ex-pressed surprise that the U.S.government would allow (the sale),”wrote Scarborough, “because Xinhua is

directed by the People’s Republic ofChina and is described by Western ob-servers as a front for the Ministry of StateSecurity (MSS), China’s version of theSoviet KGB. The ministry conducts se-curity operations at home and espionageabroad.”

From this new high-ground position,military experts are stating Xinhua willhave an ideal setup for effective elec-tronic surveillance. Bill Triplett,co-author of the book “Year of the Rat,”stated that for many years, the upperfloors of the Xinhua building in HongKong were an MSS station. “With mod-ern sophisticated, wireless listeningdevices,” said Triplett, “the Pentagon isvulnerable.”

Gertz reported that the sale violatedthe 1985 Foreign Missions Act, becauseXinhua failed to notify the StateDepartment, which must approve thesale.

Both Triplett and Gertz have been in-terviewed on Endtime’s “Politics &Religion” radio broadcast.

Four days after the Washington Timesdisclosure, Xinhua demanded an officialadmission of error from the paper for re-porting that the building was purchasedfor spying. The Times is offering no suchadmissions.

Truth being stranger than fiction, theEast Germans occupied this same seven-story building during the Cold War andwere suspected of using the apartments asa spy base.

According to a recent Pentagon intel-ligence report released to Congress,China is, in fact, building up its militaryforces in preparation for a possible warwith the United States over Taiwan. IfAmerica became involved in defendingTaiwan, the report says, China “wouldemploy all means necessary in the hopeof inflicting high casualties and weaken-ing (America’s) resolve.”

“U.S. officials who have seen the clas-sified version of the report,” wrote Gertz,“say the public version appears to havebeen modified to play down the moreominous elements of Chinese militaryactivities, such as Beijing’s recent threatsagainst the United States and Taiwan.Chinese military writings recentlywarned that China is prepared to use nu-clear weapons against the United Statesif it intervenes in a conflict betweenChina and Taiwan.”

198 million soldiersThere is conclusive evidence that the

first five Trumpets from the book ofRevelation have already blown. The6th Trumpet describes a war that will belaunched by an army of 200 million whowill kill “the third part of men.”

Endtime has long believed China willbe the nation to precipitate this war.The most significant reason for this be-lief comes as a result of a statementmade by the late Chinese dictator, MaoTseTung. He boasted in his diary thatChina could field an army of 200 mil-lion, the exact number stated in theprophecy. Was this God’s way of lettingus know that China would be the na-tion to trigger this fateful war? Wecannot be positive of this. The country’spopulation is huge, and given that thefirst five Trumpets appear to haveblown, and considering the current po-litical climate, the conclusion does notseem entirely off-base. The PLA, how-ever, has only 2.5 million soldiers. Thisis a far cry from the prophecy’s 200 mil-lion.

Asof the end of 1999, there were198,398,601 males fit for military ser-vice between the ages of 15-49. Thenumber grows by 10,273,696 per year.This means as of right now, according tothe CIA, there are about 205 millionChinese citizens ready to fight if called.

Revelation 9:16 reads, “And thenumber of the army of the horsemenwere two hundred thousand thousand:and I heard the number of them.”

The beat goes onTaiwan has just applied again for mem-

bership in the United Nations, anotherblatant self-assertion of sovereignty. ThePLA continues to hold offensive militarydrills in waters off the northern coast ofTaiwan. They are publicly demandingthat Taiwan make the “right choicesoon” and that the island is “unsafe” untilit does. Russia, China and other CentralAsian states continue to beef up joint se-curity arrangements. Chen is officiallywarning his military of increasing evi-dence that China seeks armed conflict.

The 6th Trumpet may be hanging inthe balance—ready or not. ❏

France May Ban ProselytizingEquating proselytizing with “mental

manipulation,” the nation of France isset to pass a law to imprison proselytizersfor up to two years. Among the “danger-ous sects” targeted by thisgroundbreaking piece of legislation aremainstream evangelical Christian de-nominations.

The bill, drafted by members of theSocialist Party, would allow the Frenchgovernment to shut down a religiousgroup when two members of that groupare found guilty of at least one infraction.

“Overly aggressive evangelical preach-ing could be interpreted by some asmental manipulation,” said Rev. N. J.L’Heureux, moderator of the religious lib-erty panel of the National Council ofChurches.

The far-reaching implications of thisbill is in keeping with the principles ofInterfaithism. It parallels the anti-prose-lytizing requirement of members of thenewly formed United Religions.

Bush on IsraelGeorge W. Bush pledged that, should

he be elected president, he would movethe U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem or to “thecity Israel has chosen as its capital.” Thepledge was made to the Washington-based American-Israel Public AffairsCommittee.

He further said, “America should notinterfere in Israel’s Democratic process,and America will not interfere in Israelielections when I am president.” Hisstatement was a not-so-subtle swipe atthe Clinton Administration’s direct in-volvement in the election of EhudBarak, which was engineered byClinton’s aide James Carville.

UN Reprimands U.S. HumanRights Record

The UN Committee Against Torturedelivered a severe public rebuke to theUnited States for its horrific record onpreventing torture in its prisons. HaroldKoh, State Department official, told thecommittee that the U.S. governmentwould give the report “very close andcareful consideration.”

Amnesty International, an indepen-dent human rights organization,welcomed the report saying that it washigh time the U.S. ended its selective ap-proach to international law. SpokesmanFob Freer said, “It’s a strong message tothe United States that once you ratifythese treaties, you have to do so in thesame way that everybody else does.”

Mary Robinson, UN HighCommissioner for Human Rights, ex-pressed regret over Texas’ recentexecution of Gary Graham. “I believethe execution ran counter to widely ac-cepted international principles and tothe international community’s desire forthe abolition of the death penalty,” shesaid, expressing concern that Grahamwas executed for a crime committed be-fore he was 18. The UN Convention onthe Rights of the Child stipulates thatthe death sentence should not be passedon those who were juveniles at the timea crime was committed.

everything to do with a rebuilt templeand the resumption of animal sacrificesin that temple in the endtimes. However,the Temple Mount is disputed territory.The Israelis captured it in the 1967 War,but the Muslims actually are in charge ofit because their two holy sites, the Domeof the Rock and the Al Aqsa Mosque, arethere. Yet the religious faction in Israelvery much wants to build its ThirdTemple on the Temple Mount. The sta-tus of the Temple Mount must be dealtwith in order to settle the final status ofJerusalem.

Time to settle the Jerusalem question

Zechariah 14:2 specifically states thatJerusalem is the issue over which theBattle of Armageddon will be fought. Aswe go to press, Yasser Arafat, Ehud Barakand President Clinton are meeting atCamp David in an attempt to settle thefinal status of Jerusalem. They are dis-cussing right now the issue that willultimately throw the world into theBattle of Armageddon. And they are alsodiscussing the very things that will markthe beginning of Daniel’s seventiethweek. The deadline that has been set forthe resolving of all these issues isSeptember 13, 2000—a mere twomonths from now!

What is the covenant?Daniel’s prophecy states that the final

seven-year period will be begun by theconfirmation of a covenant. The bigquestion is, “What is the covenant?”

We know that the entire “seventiethweek” prophecy revolves around the sta-tus of Jerusalem and the Temple Mount.This would imply that the covenant hassomething to do with these issues.

In 1993, when it became apparent thatthe peace process had begun in earnest,Israelis understood that eventually thenegotiations would challenge Israel’sright to Jerusalem. Consequently, Jewishleaders produced a document called“The Jerusalem Covenant.” It was pa-raded to Israel’s capital building andplaced on display in a beautiful glass caseon the main floor of the Israeli Knesset.

The Jerusalem Covenant states thatJerusalem is Israel’s eternal capital andmust remain forever under Israeli con-trol. The document concludes with thefollowing:

From this place, weonce again take thisvow: “If I forget thee, OJerusalem, may myright hand lose itsstrength; may mytongue cleave to mypalate if I do not re-member you, if I do notraise up Jerusalem at thevery height of my rejoic-ing.”

What is the confirming ofthe covenant?

The prophecy statesthat the Antichristwill confirm thecovenant for sevenyears. If the JerusalemCovenant is thecovenant in theprophecy, then whatwould the “confirm-ing” of the covenantbe?

To confirm meansto agree with or tostrengthen. It is possi-ble that theAntichrist, confirm-ing the JerusalemCovenant, merelylends his approval tothe fact that Jerusalemremains under Israelisovereignty.

So what will happen?

In the presentCamp David Summit,the core issue is con-trol of Jerusalem.Israel states thatJerusalem can neveragain be divided orshared—it must re-main forever underIsrael’s sovereignty.The Palestinians say that a Palestinianstate must be established with at leastEast Jerusalem as its capital.

Many proposals have been set forth toresolve this impasse. Recognizing the im-possibility of reaching a solution to theJerusalem problem at this time, somediplomats have proposed settling all

other issues while leaving the Jerusalemquestion for later. Arafat says this is notacceptable. Creating an open city toserve as two capitals and to be shared byall has been considered, but Israel hasbeen unwilling to consider this solution.Placing the Palestinian capital in theJerusalem suburb of Abu Dis with special

Let’s face it, though. The 88 membersof Endtime Prophecy Tour 2000 didn’texactly set out to lie on a beach for 13days. We went to experience the lands ofthe Bible, and this we did. But God hadmore in store. He gave each of us sevendozen new friends. If I were to take butone memory of this trip with me to lastforever, that’s the one. It was the people.

Yes, I will remember forever the morn-ing of our first day sitting in anamphitheater on the Mount of Oliveslooking down in the Temple Mount. Thewords that Irvin gave us there penetrateddeep into our intellects and deeper intoour souls. Oh, what that place has meantto Israel in the past! And, oh, what it willmean in the future! We stood on the veryspot where Jesus may land with ten thou-sands of His saints, and every one of usintends to be in that number.

But I will remember just as well thatfateful night aboard our Greek Islandcruise when all six feet and seven inchesof Arvel came to dinner white as a ghost.“My wife’s gonna kill me!” he eeked as hetried to explain to us why his salt’n’pep-

per hair was now just pepper. “I asked thelady to cut my hair and she dyed it!”

While many of us will recall foreverthe emotion of standing on the spotwhere most scholars believe Jesus wasborn, many will also recall forever thetwo street vendors just outside thechurch — the first offering a warm pintof bottled water for $2, while the other,just ten feet away, was selling two refrig-erated liters for one dollah.

We learned many things in Israel,

Athens, Corinth, Patmos and Ephesus.That sunblock works on the nose, butonly if you put some there. That pass-ports should not be packed into yourcheck-in luggage. That Noah’s Ark cameto rest on Mount Ararat, not MountArafat. And Moses did not receive thelaw at Mount Cyanide.

Baptism etiquette does not allow forbikinis. Big Macs taste pretty much thesame in every country. Women washeverything, while men will first smell and

then decide. Driving along the cliff-hug-ging hairpin turns through the Judeanhills is an excellent time to let your busdriver know how much you really loveand appreciate him.

We heard many things. These may beremembered the most:

“I didn’t get a wake-up call. The phonerang and I answered it. Nobody was thereso I hung up and went back to sleep.”

“When we visit Corinth in Greece,which will it be—First Corinth orSecond Corinth?”

“Athens must have lots of colleges.Every sign I see is advertising a fraternityor sorority.”

“I will be your tour guide here in Israel.My name is Yehuda Guy, which is aHebrew name that means, ‘You the guy.’”

“Eddie, why are you wearing a UnitedNations t-shirt?”

“No. Really. I can’t eat another bite.Wait. Did you say baklava?”

“What does that cost? One dollah?”“Has anyone seen Matthew?”We sang as we sailed the Sea of

Galilee. We rejoiced as 31 of our 88 werebaptized in the Jordan River, 23 for thefirst time. From Megiddo we looked upand watched the Israeli Air Force train.We looked down and saw where “TheBattle” will soon take place.

We laughed together, we cried to-gether, we prayed together and welaughed some more. When all was saidand done it was more than the places. Itwas the people. I felt badly for those whowere turned away.

It wasn’t about what we saw, but howwe saw it — from the pages of Bibleprophecy and through the eyes of ourfriend, Irvin Baxter Jr. There was not aplace on earth we would have ratherbeen, and not a group of people to bewith other than these.

I want to do it again.Next year we’re planning an early-

April trip to Egypt and Israel. We willvisit the Pyramids and the Sphinx. Onour way to Jerusalem and the Galilee, wewill stop at the Suez Canal and driveacross the Sinai Peninsula experiencingfirsthand the places where Israel foughtagainst her Arab neighbors on her way tofulfilling the prophecies of becoming anation after 1,900 years in exile.

When will we know for sure?All of us yearn for something that we

can put our teeth into concerning God’stime-clock. It is entirely possible that thecovenant could be confirmed and thatwe still might not recognize that fact.

So then can we know anything forsure? Yes. II Thessalonians 2:3-4 de-scribes the revealing of the Antichrist,“Let no man deceive you by any means:for that day shall not come, except therecome a falling away first, and that man ofsin be revealed, the son of perdition;Who opposeth and exalteth himselfabove all that is called God, or that isworshipped; so that he as God sitteth inthe temple of God, shewing himself thathe is God.”

The event described in this passage isthe Abomination of Desolation. It occurs

in the middle ofthe seven-year pe-riod, three andone-half years be-fore Armageddon.The Apostle Paulclearly states thatthe man of sin, theAntichrist, will berevealed at thistime. When thisevent occurs, therewill be no moreroom for doubt.We will thenknow who theAntichrist is and

how long remains until Armageddon.The absolutely exhilarating fact is that

we appear to be on the brink of the great-est prophetic fulfillment since thecrucifixion of Jesus Christ! Never havethe words of Jesus in Luke 21:28 beenmore real, “And when these things beginto come to pass, then look up, and lift upyour heads; for your redemption drawethnigh.” ❏
