Believe me, it’s not due to a lack product ideas. Dr. Bill, Brian, and I are always investigating and studying new research and coming up with many new possibilities for products. However, before we introduce any new prod- uct to you, our clients, we make sure, and I mean ABSOLUTELY SURE, that the prod- uct meets all of our many requirements and it will benefit you. Only one in ten of all the possibilities we consider ever makes it from the concept stage to actual product. Right now though, I’m happy to announce that two new products have met and exceeded our requirements and are now available to you. Both of these products were designed by our Research and Development head Dr. Bill Misner, and trust me, they are extraordinary. The first one I’m excited to share with you is the long-awaited PERPETUEM. PERPETUEM is the first powdered drink mix we’ve introduced in over a decade, and I can tell you right now that it was well worth the wait. I was fortunate to test PER- PETUEM in my training last summer, and I used it in my successful attempt to become the first cyclist in history to complete a Double Furnace Creek 508. From the first time I tried it, I was convinced that this product had earned a rightful place in the Hammer Nutrition line of superior fuels. It was an absolutely integral part of my fueling during all my long training rides and, of course, in the Double 508 itself. PERPETUEM represents a major step for- ward in the evolution of state-of-the-art fuels for use during training and competition last- ing two hours or longer. By no means does it replace Sustained Energy or Hammer Gel; instead, it is a perfect complement to those fuels during your longest training sessions and races. Interspersed with my own comments, I’d like to share the information Dr. Bill has provided about this fantastic product, what it contains, and how best to use it. Why Did Hammer Nutrition Formulate a New “Concept” Drink? Hammer Gel was designed primarily to fulfill the fuel requirements for more intense endurance events less than three hours at above 80% VO2 Max performance HR. Sustained Energy, used alone or with Hammer Gel, satisfies fuel requirements for endurance events lasting up to 6 hours at a 70- 80% VO2 Max performance HR. Until now, no energy formula has been specifically for- mulated for endurance events lasting from 1-10 days in duration. PERPETUEM is for- mulated for athletes attempting events lasting longer than two hours, especially when per- formance rate is kept between 50-80% VO2 Max. For ultra-endurance events, especially those that extend beyond the 12-hour mark, PERPETUEM has no equal. What’s in Perpetuem and How Does it Work? PERPETUEM contains a remarkable macronutrient profile, which reflects the fuels and substrates recruited efficiently from car- bohydrates, fatty acids, and lean muscle amino acids. To complement its macronutrient pro- file, several micronutrients contribute lipotropic factors for enhancing fat metabo- lism, glucose-limiting factors to reduce blood-sugar depletion, and a modest elec- trolyte profile for reducing the risk of muscle cramping and gastric upset. Carbohydrate As with all our fuels, we never add simple sugars to the carbohydrate profile. Instead, we use a specific maltodex- trin in PERPETUEM that provides nearly 87% of its caloric composition in long chain carbohydrates. Protein A new (Dr. Bill calls it “remarkable”) calcium-enhanced soy protein isolate known as “XT” makes up nearly 10% of PERPETUEM’s caloric profile, the same per- centage that is cannibalized during long, slow 38 issue (see Perpetuem on page 4) Perpetuem Has Landed!

To many of you, it might seem like a long, long time before we offer new products.Believe me, it’s not due to a lack product ideas.Dr. Bill, Brian, and I are always investigatingand studying new research and coming upwith many new possibilities for products. However, before we introduce any new prod-uct to you, our clients, we make sure, and Imean ABSOLUTELY SURE, that the prod-uct meets all of our many requirements and itwill benefit you. Only one in ten of all thepossibilities we consider ever makes it fromthe concept stage to actual product.

Right now though, I’m happy to announcethat two new products have met and exceededour requirements and are now available to you. Both of these products were designed by ourResearch and Development head Dr. BillMisner, and trust me, they are extraordinary. The first one I’m excited to share with you isthe long-awaited PERPETUEM.PERPETUEM is the first powdered drinkmix we’ve introduced in over a decade, and Ican tell you right now that it was well worththe wait. I was fortunate to test PER-PETUEM in my training last summer, and Iused it in my successful attempt to become thefirst cyclist in history to complete a DoubleFurnace Creek 508. From the first time I triedit, I was convinced that this product hadearned a rightful place in the HammerNutrition line of superior fuels. It was anabsolutely integral part of my fueling duringall my long training rides and, of course, in theDouble 508 itself.

PERPETUEM represents a major step for-ward in the evolution of state-of-the-art fuelsfor use during training and competition last-ing two hours or longer. By no means does itreplace Sustained Energy or Hammer Gel;instead, it is a perfect complement to thosefuels during your longest training sessions andraces. Interspersed with my own comments,I’d like to share the information Dr. Bill hasprovided about this fantastic product, what itcontains, and how best to use it.

Why Did Hammer NutritionFormulate a New “Concept” Drink?

Hammer Gel was designed primarily to fulfillthe fuel requirements for more intenseendurance events less than three hours atabove 80% VO2 Max performance HR.Sustained Energy, used alone or withHammer Gel, satisfies fuel requirements forendurance events lasting up to 6 hours at a 70-80% VO2 Max performance HR. Until now,no energy formula has been specifically for-mulated for endurance events lasting from1-10 days in duration. PERPETUEM is for-mulated for athletes attempting events lastinglonger than two hours, especially when per-formance rate is kept between 50-80% VO2Max. For ultra-endurance events, especiallythose that extend beyond the 12-hour mark,PERPETUEM has no equal.

What’s in Perpetuem and How Does it Work?

PERPETUEM contains a remarkablemacronutrient profile, which reflects the fuelsand substrates recruited efficiently from car-bohydrates, fatty acids, and lean muscle aminoacids. To complement its macronutrient pro-file, several micronutrients contributelipotropic factors for enhancing fat metabo-lism, glucose-limiting factors to reduceblood-sugar depletion, and a modest elec-trolyte profile for reducing the risk of musclecramping and gastric upset.

Carbohydrate As with all our fuels, wenever add simple sugars to the carbohydrateprofile. Instead, we use a specific maltodex-trin in PERPETUEM that provides nearly87% of its caloric composition in long chaincarbohydrates.

Protein A new (Dr. Bill calls it “remarkable”)calcium-enhanced soy protein isolate knownas “XT” makes up nearly 10% ofPERPETUEM’s caloric profile, the same per-centage that is cannibalized during long, slow

a newsletter for the endurance athlete

Dear Client,

After Dr. Bill’s extensive research in the over-whelming number of “healthy bacteria”supplements available to consumers, we arenow proud to add the Sedona Labs productiFlora to our line. iFlora is the most powerfulprobiotic available, with 16 different valuablestrains... a whopping 15 billion viable cells percapsule! For ultimate digestive and intestinaltract health protection, especially after acourse of antibiotics, you will simply not finda more complete and powerful aid than iFlora.

Infections, poor diet, stress, overuse of anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs),antibiotic use, and even chlorinated water candeplete or destroy the healthy bacteria livingin the human digestive system. This can allowundesirable bacteria to flourish and severelycompromise digestive function, nutrientabsorption, intestinal health, and immunity.Of course, undesirable microorganisms alsocause other various infections with theirresultant discomfort and fatigue.

Maintaining healthy intestinal flora should bea special priority for athletes. One well-knownnutritionist states, “Unhealthy flora can result

in the liberation of abnormally high levels ofammonia as protein-containing foods aredigested. This irritates the intestinal mem-branes. In addition, the ammonia is absorbedinto the bloodstream and must be detoxifiedby the liver...” As we know, high blood levelsof ammonia are linked to fatigue and everystep that can be taken to minimize excessammonia production and accumulationshould be taken. For many, many reasons, oneof which is to help prevent excess ammoniaproduction where it first manifests, the wiseathlete will make sure the “gut is healthy” atall times.

So while the addition of this new probioticdoes not mean that we are discontinuingDigest Caps, it offers even greater protectionand support, particularly if you are sufferingfrom candida, poor digestion and nausea, andespecially after a course of antibiotics, whichdestroys both the “friendly” and harmful bac-teria. A 2-4 week course of iFlora, with its“mega potent” quantities per capsule, is superbfor restoring intestinal flora to optimal levels.iFlora, which Dr. Bill calls “the ultimate pro-

In today’s stressful world, it’s often difficult toobtain adequate sleep. Hard training increasesan athlete’s susceptibility to sleep difficulties. In Endurance News #36, Dr. Bill and NateLlerandi contributed to an article entitled“The Need For Sleep” that outlined theimportance of quality sleep for both athleticperformance and overall health. Nate calledlack of sleep “the ultimate performance killer.”

Without question, chronic sleep deficiencywill ravage athletic performance and health. To ensure you don’t compromise the amountand quality of your sleep, we proudly intro-duce Dr. Bill’s latest creation, REM Caps, apowerful multi-formula that will naturallyenable your body to wind down, relax, and fallasleep quickly and thoroughly.

What’s In REM Caps and WhatDo These Nutrients Do?

Valerian Root Extract Valerian is perhapsthe most widely used herb for the treatmentof nervousness, stress, anxiety, and insomnia.Valerian is also beneficial for improving circu-lation, treating high blood pressure, reducingmucus accumulation during colds, relievingmuscle cramps, and helping to relieve the

symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.

Melatonin Melatonin is a naturally pro-duced hormone secreted by the pineal gland, atiny structure in the brain. Melatonin isresponsible for regulating the biologicalrhythms in humans and is an effective aid toalleviate insomnia.Melatonin provides other health benefits, also. Dr. James Balch has stated that mela-tonin is “one of the most powerfulantioxidants ever discovered-with a greaterrange of effectiveness than vitamin C, vitaminE, or beta-carotene . . .” Dr. Shari Liebermanstates “melatonin neutralizes one of the mostdamaging free radicals, and does so five timesmore effectively than the antioxidant enzymeglutathione . . .” Due to its antioxidant bene-fits, melatonin has been shown to be apowerful immune system stimulator, with thepotential for helping to prevent certain can-cers.

Melatonin is such a powerful and beneficialnutrient that Dr. Bill has featured it in no lessthan ten issues of the Journal Of Endurance, which are listed:

* J.O.E.:1999:#[3]

* J.O.E.:1999:#[10]* J.O.E.:1999:#[11]* J.O.E.:1999:#[19]* J.O.E.:2000:#[1]* J.O.E.:2000:#[7]* J.O.E.:2000:#[9]* J.O.E.:2000:#[12]* J.O.E.:2000:#[13]* J.O.E.:2000:#[16]

5-HTP (5-hydroxy l-tryptophan) 5-HTP, anatural precursor of the hormone serotonin isisolated from the seed of Griffonia simplici-folia. Along with melatonin and valerian, ithelps to prevent insomnia. 5-HTP alsoenhances the release of growth hormone dur-ing sleep. In addition, the use of 5-HTP canhelp alleviate several other conditions includ-ing depression, carbohydrate craving, tensionand migraine headaches, and premenstrualsyndrome.

Magnesium (as amino acid chelate) Amongthe dozens of roles magnesium plays in thebody is its function as a muscle relaxant.Along with the valerian component in REMCaps, magnesium can provide real benefits foranyone suffering from night cramping.

REM CapsA New Addition to the E-CAPS Family

biotic”, comes in all-vegetable capsules, has ashelf life of one year, and provides 30 daysworth of 450 billion “Live” probiotics for$24.00, only $0.80 per day.

On the other hand, Digest Caps, unlikeiFlora, does not require refrigeration whenopened, so it’s perfect for taking along ontrips. Digest Caps’ shelf life, a minimum ofthree years, is unsurpassed and provides 30days worth of 90 billion “Live” probiotics for$0.43 per day. A daily, maintenance dose ofDigest Caps will provide excellent intestinalhealth support at a very reasonable price.

Suggested Use For iFlora and Digest Caps

While there are no “set in stone” rules regard-ing optimal use of any probiotic product, hereis a suggested protocol we believe will beextremely beneficial. If you do not alreadytake a probiotic supplement daily, especiallyafter a course of antibiotics or if you are cur-rently suffering from candida, poor digestion, nausea, and compromised immune systemfunction follow these guidelines:

* Take 2 iFlora Caps with water in the morn-ing 30 minutes before breakfast and othersupplements. Continue this dose for 2-4weeks as desired, depending on the severity ofyour current situation.* To maintain healthy levels of intestinal floraonce they have been restored by a 2-4 weekcourse of iFlora, take 1-2 Digest Caps daily individed doses, preferably (although notrequired) prior to meals and other supple-ments for as long as you want to maintain ahealthy digestive system.

What’s In iFlora?

The list of ingredients in iFlora is astonish-ingly extensive, unlike any other probioticsupplement available. So too is the extensiveamount of information available on eachingredient. In fact, there’s so much informa-tion that space prohibits us from including ithere. Dr. Bill goes so far as to say “to includereal science on each of iFlora’s 16 probiotics, itwould take an encyclopedia”. We will includea good portion of this technical informationin a soon-to-be-added link on our web site. Each capsule provides substantial amount of

the following “healthy” bacteria:

Lactobacillus rhamnosus Bifidobacterium bifidum Lactobacillus acidophilus Bifidobacterium infantis Bifidobacterium longum Streptococcus thermophilus Lactobacillus plantarum Lactobacillus salivarius Lactobacillus casei Lactobacillus bulgaricus Lactobacillus acidophilus DDS-1 Lactobacillus sporogenes Lactococcus lactis *+ Lactobacillus paracasei *+ Lactobacillus Brevis *+ Bifidobacterium Lactis -Lactobacillus reuteri*

Wow! That’s some ingredient list! There’s nodoubt that iFlora is by far the most powerfulprobiotic available. iFlora is in stock right nowso to order, give us a call at 1-800-336-1977 orvia online at www.e-caps.com

endurance workouts. The XT-Soy has had thenormally pungent taste of soy removed, butthe naturally high cardiovascular-enhancingisoflavone content remains completely intact.

Fat A de-oiled “super lecithin” (extractedfrom soybeans) is ideal for consistently andreliably fueling the body by maximizing ener-gy production from stored fatty acids.

Flavor We use Energy Smart™, the healthysweetener of Hammer Gel, in PER-PETUEM; it has a mellow vanilla-orange“Dreamsicle” flavor.

Additional Nutrients

* Tribasic sodium phosphate (TSP), themain ingredient of Race Day Boost, is includ-ed in a specific, hourly-effective dose. TSP isan exceptional buffering agent that neutralizesthe effects of excess lactic acid during exerciseand helps prolong endurance by balancing theacid/alkaline levels in the blood

* Chromium polynicotinate is a trace mineralthat adds a hormone-like regulation to expandefficient carbohydrate metabolism. All carbo-hydrates are eventually reduced in the body tosimple glucose, the body’s primary source ofenergy. Chromium helps mediate the transferof serum glucose into muscle cells.

* L-carnitine, an amino acid cousin, trans-ports fatty acids into muscle cell mitochondriawhere fuels are burned for energy production. Most of us carry at least 85,000-90,000 calo-ries of energy in fatty-acid stores. If the bodyis depleted or low in l-carnitine, these fattyacid reserves become unavailable.

* Choline bitartrate, a member of the B-vita-min complex, also functions at the cellularlevel, helping the body access its stored fattyacids for energy conversion.

* Carnosine, a naturally occurring dipeptidemade from the amino acids histidine and ala-nine, functions primarily to buffer lactatebuildup in muscle structures and also scav-enges an assortment of free-radicals.

We included a modest electrolyte profile inPERPETUEM to optimize digestibility ofthe product. You may have reduced need forEndurolytes or Endurolytes Powder whenusing PERPETUEM, but don’t assume thishas a self-contained electrolyte profile. Some, but not all, athletes using PERPETUEMwho normally use only 1-2 Endurolytes per

hour may be able to go without Endurolytesupplementation. The electrolyte profile inPERPETUEM is approximately equivalentto 1-2 Endurolytes per hour, depending onthe individual athlete. Athletes using PER-PETUEM should do a trial in trainingreducing usual Endurolytes dose by 1-2 cap-sules per hour.

THE BOTTOM LINE

PERPETUEM represents the final link, never before available, in meeting the body’sfueling requirements no matter how long ordifficult the exercise session or race. UsingPERPETUEM results in state-of-the-artfuel-to-energy transfer during prolongedendurance exercise. Whether your training is2-10 hours or 2-10 days, PERPETUEM per-fectly complements Hammer Gel andSustained Energy, fulfilling every caloricrequirement you could possibly have.

THE TECHNICAL INFORMATION

I’ve included the technical information fromDr. Bill, which explains how the combinationof specific fats (in the form of monoglyc-erides) reacts favorably with the specifichigh-dextrose-equivalent carbohydrate sourceused in PERPETUEM to help preventdegradation of the fuel and prolongendurance.

Carbohydrates have an affinity for protein. When they react in any kind of moisture theychange structure sensitivity toward stalenessor what scientists commonly call “retrograda-tion.” The lower the maltodextrin’s dextroseequivalence (D.E.), the more likely the longerchain lengths will degrade or crystallize.Greater enzyme and fluid quantity-volumebecomes necessary to calorie convert stale-mated-degraded carbohydrate substrates. Inthe absence of enzyme or fluid availability, such as that found in the depleted enduranceathlete during exercise training or events, caloric transformation may be suspended ordelayed from the energy cycle. A maltodex-trin-monoglyceride complex is formed whenthe monoglyceride’s long hydrophobic fattyacid chain is inserted into the middle of amaltodextrin helix. This action delays long-chain carbohydrate retrogradation in thepresence of amino acid substrates. Enzymatichydrolysis of lecithin produces lysolecithins inwhich the middle fatty acid is removed. Thisallows the lecithin’s hydrophobic remainingfatty acid to be drawn into the helix of thecarbohydrate for inhibition of retrogradedstaling. Scanning calorimetry demonstrates

that hydrolyzed lyophilized soy lecithin effec-tively complexly inter-reacts favorably withcertain starches. When a lipid-lysolecithin,with its middle fatty acid removed, is agree-ably adjoined or “coated” upon in agel-formatted starch, it will actively retard therelease of free amylose, which will interactwith the available proteins, resulting in retro-graded staling reaction in time. Such a fuelsource hypothetically enhances prolongedperformance in nearly ‘perpetual’ fashion.”

Emulsifying free amylose/amylopectins inter-act with proteins even in a powdered format, resulting in retrogradation; this is called “StaleBread Syndrome.” This syndrome may beprevented by inserting a monoglyceride long-hydrophobic fatty-acid chain into the middleof a starch helix-complex such as amylose oramylopectin. This may be why using a deoiledlecithin with its choline and phosphatidylser-ine (PS) properties that may generate a bigger“energy bang” from carbohydrate and proteinconsumption during prolonged training. There is a difference in lecithins from theireffect on food breakdown during absorptionin an exercising athlete’s physiology. Thelipid-lysolecithin formulated in Perpetuemacts as lipid-lysolecithin and agreeably adjoinsor “coats” long-chained maltodextrins whenhydrolyzed in a solution. This actively retardsthe release of free amylose, which will halt ret-rograded staling reaction in time and willdelay absorption rate for slow uptake of calo-ries. This adds stability for retrogradation atroom temperatures.

health needs as well. The literature on CoQ10is astounding in its depth of just how manybenefits it provides to the human body, espe-cially in terms of aiding in the prevention of avariety of age-related diseases. CoQ10 alonehas had a few books devoted to it and the ben-efits it provides. Another example is the TMG(trimethylglycine) component in EnduroCaps. TMG aids in lowering dangeroushomocysteine levels, which are indicated incardiovascular disease.

I could go on and on but to get back to thequestion, E-CAPS does not make anythingsimilar to Optygen because we believe theproducts we make, especially Race Caps andEnduro Caps are superior to Optygen in bothefficacy and value. Take Race Caps andEnduro Caps on a daily basis and you’ll covera huge chunk athletic performance and gener-al health needs. ‘Nuff said!

Whew! It’s been quite a spring so far and, thanks to you, E-CAPS continues to flourishand grow. As has been Brian’s commitmentright from the start, we remain firm in ourresolve to provide you with the very best inboth products and service. I hope 2003 hasbeen good to you so far and I wish you thevery best for a healthy and successful seasonthis year!

I have been eager to complete and share thisedition of Endurance News because it has somuch good information and the announce-ment of two exciting new products,Perpetuem and REM Caps, described indetail in a separate article. I could write pageafter page about the benefits of these twoproducts, but I’ll show some self control andkeep it to a manageable amount of text.

Two New Products

What can I say about Perpetuem? I was soblown away by this fuel’s effectiveness that Iliterally begged Dr. Bill to make more for me.I remember several years ago, long before Iworked for E-CAPS, when Brian first intro-duced me to a new fuel called Energy Surge(now known as Sustained Energy). After thefirst few workouts using that fuel I rememberthinking, “Where has this stuff been all mycareer? This product is amazing!” Well, I stillfeel that way about Sustained Energy (I can’timagine doing an endurance workout or racewithout it) but when I started incorporatingPerpetuem into my workouts I becameabsolutely convinced that I had the right fuelfor any length workout or race. Having thatfuel, along with the arsenal of other HammerNutrition fuels, in my Double Furnace Creek508 fulfilled every single energy requirementmy body had.

If your workouts and races are between twohours and two weeks in length (I’m serious), Ihave no doubt you will be absolutely amazed athow well Perpetuem will work for you. It’s theperfect fuel for those longer workouts andraces and the farther you go, the more you willappreciate it. If you’re competing in half, full,or longer distance triathlons, ultra runningraces, adventure races, cycling races from dou-ble century distance to RAAM, or anything“ultra,” I guarantee you will not find a betterfuel than Perpetuem. It has a wonderful, unique flavor, which is best described as a mel-low orange/vanilla flavor, very similar to“Dreamsicle” ice cream. You’re going to love it!

The other new product is a recovery product.

If you’re at all like me, you find that fallingasleep quickly and staying asleep completely isa real challenge, especially when your trainingvolume increases. All I can say is that REMCaps is a lifesaver for me. The powerful com-bination of four synergistic muscle and nerverelaxing nutrients has made a world of differ-ence in helping me improve the quality of mysleep. The “Ask Dr. Bill” section of thisnewsletter pertains to how stress and anxietycontribute to poor heath and athletic per-formance and how certain nutrients can helpturn the tide in favor of the athlete. You’ll real-ly appreciate REM Caps when you find howwell it helps you relax and obtain the recuper-ative benefits of complete and thorough sleep.

One Product We Don’t Make

I think you’ll find Dr. Bill’s review onOptygen particularly interesting. I have to saythat I’ve been getting a lot of emails about thisproduct asking if E-CAPS makes somethingsimilar or comparable. No, we don’t, andhere’s why not.

While I always keep an open mind aboutrecently promoted nutrients/products and thepossibility of benefits, I’ve learned to weighthe potential benefits of the nutrients in aproduct versus the known benefits of thenutrients in a product before making a deci-sion. I also learned to make sure that theproduct in question is worth the price beingasked. Heaven knows that I’ve dropped a lotof money over the years testing out variousproducts (can anyone say “pyruvate?”) only tofind that most of the time the resultsI achieved never came close to the benefitsclaimed. Sometimes I did notice benefits, butthe price tag was too high.

After testing dozens of dozens of productsover the years (I admit it, I’m a supplementguinea pig), along with reviewing all the avail-able information regarding the nutrients inthe products, I’ve yet to find any product,Optygen included, that can compete withRace Caps and Enduro Caps. For both athlet-ic performance and overall health benefits, you would be hard pressed to find anythingcomparable, and certainly nothing that comesclose to the cost/benefit bargain of this foun-dation pair.

The primary nutrients in Race Caps andEnduro Caps are key substrates the bodyneeds to convert the food and oxygen youconsume into energy. In addition, the nutri-ents in Race and Enduro Caps (especially theCoQ10 in Race Caps) have been proven tohave a wide variety of benefits for overall

The newest addition to the E-CAPS &HAMMER NUTRITION line isn’t evenone of our products. In response to demandfrom many of our customers who crave some-thing solid, we’ve been searching for anenergy/food bar that we could feel good aboutendorsing. We’re happy to announce thatafter many years of disappointing trials, we’vefinally found one, the Organic Vegan FoodBar.

All of us here at E-CAPS have been usingthis bar for many months and it was my pri-mary source of solid food during mysuccessful Double Furnace Creek 508 attemptlast October. The bars are 100% organic andalkaline forming, with only eight grams ofsimple sugar (out of 30 grams of carbohy-drates) per bar. We’ve found the taste andtexture ideal.

The bar has an impressive ingredient list, especially when compared to other currentlyavailable energy or food bars. The ingredients(listed below) are 100% certified organic:

Almond butter, flax seed sprouts, soy sprouts, quinoa sprouts, sesame seeds, date paste, riceprotein, rice crisps, raisins, agave nectar.

Nutrition Facts:

Calories 296Total Fat 14 g

Saturated Fat 1.4 gCholesterol 0 mgTotal Carbohydrates 30 g

Total Dietary Fiber 1 gSugars 8 g

Protein 15 gSodium 85 mgVitamin A 10% Vitamin C 2%Calcium 10%Iron 15%

To call the Organic Vegan Food Bar an ener-gy bar wouldn’t do it justice. It is by far thehealthiest food/meal replacement bar we’vefound and it makes an ideal snack. During

your longest workouts and races you shouldcontinue to use Hammer Gel, SustainedEnergy and the soon-to-be-arrivingPerepetuem as your primary fuels. However, used occasionally, the Organic Vegan FoodBar is a totally acceptable and very healthysolid food choice.

We retail the Organic Vegan Food Bar for$2.50 each, 12 or more at $2.25 each. Thismay seem a little high, but compared to theinferior ingredients found in mostenergy/food bars, the price is more than justi-fied. This product is becoming more widelyavailable at health food stores, where it typi-cally sells for $2.79 - $2.99 per bar. Werespectfully request that you refrain from ask-ing any retailers to match our price. Also, please note that that we cannot offer dis-counts on this product to sponsored athletesor teams.

The Organic Vegan Food Bar is available nowand can be ordered direct or on our web sitewww.e-caps.com or by calling 1.800.336.1977

Change of Focus

Now that the racing season is upon us, thefocus on your training should be shifting. Youeither have peaked in your weekly hours orwill do so soon, depending on when your keyraces are. Also, you will be shifting to moreanaerobic work and less aerobic. The majori-ty of your training is still aerobic - 80% ormore - but this should be considerably lessthan during the winter, when maybe 95% wasaerobic. With the increase in intensity, thereshould be a leveling off or decrease in weeklytraining hours (up to 20%). This decrease inhours compensates for the increase in intensi-

ty. If you schedule deliberate recovery weeksevery 4th or 5th week, you can get by withmore hours and more hard training. If youstill don’t include rest weeks of reduced hours(around 50-60% of normal weeks) andreduced workloads (90-100% aerobic - below75%), then you should think about it.Nothing derails great fitness like over training.

Finally, it’s time to start cutting back onweights. If you’ve been lifting 3 days a week(hopefully not more than that), then it’s timefor 2 days. The fall and winter was the timeto make gains in your strength. With 2 ses-sions a week, you should still make somegains. But you need to reduce the amount ofweight work you’re doing now that you’reincreasing your intensity in your primary

sport(s). Soon, it will be time to reduce yourweight routine to once per week, probably inanother 4-6 weeks. At that point, the goal issimply to maintain the strength gains you’vemade, not to build on them. Too muchweight work will break you down and keepthe muscles from recovering properly as therigors of the racing season pile up.

Question: I was wondering what yourthoughts are about whether or not emotionalstress has a large impact on performance.Does it cause chemical imbalances?

ANSWER: In a past issue of the Journal ofEndurance, we reviewed a paper, which dra-matically shows how anxiety can inhibitperformance outcome proportionate to howhigh it is permitted to go. Performance best, from a standpoint of evaluating circulatoryhormones, is optimal when the subject is mostrelaxed. My comments on this research pre-cede the abstract from a paper, which thoughdone on livestock has a remarkable applica-tion to humans. If emotions are negative, notcontrolled, or excessive, performance can beinhibited by up to 30%. In some rare cases, Ihave seen athletes who were emotionally notcontrolled fail to finish an event much lessperform it at all. Emotional lack of controlcan result in behavioral reactions, neuroen-docrine responses to stress (cortisol inresponse to an ACTH challenge, cate-cholamine synthesizing enzymes), health(number of medical treatments, abomasallesions), and glycolytic depletion rate (glyco-gen loss in exercising muscle).

We can learn from this research on livestockgoing to slaughter, though perhaps I amstretching the point in terms of applying it toathletes prior to a race event. With our “Love-Hate” relationship with endurance events, it isremarkably easy to shoot ourselves in theproverbial foot by too much worry, stress, oranxiety prior to an event. If there is some sortof protocol prior to an event for “GentlingOurselves,” the result will be enhanced glyco-gen stores and plausibly better performance.

If training performance is consistently betterthan race results, then stress and anxiety maybe hindering physiological glycogen replen-ishment. Supplemental L-Theanine,5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) melatonin, valerian, added to taking a warm bath orsauna, and relaxing 2 hours before sleep mayreduce pre-race jitters just enough to preservethe possibility of a personal best instead of aDNF or personal worst.

There’s a new golf commercial featuring sever-al of the world’s top players boasting aboutwhat drives them to excel. It starts with themost famous among them, a left-hander, stat-ing, “I hate losing more than I love winning.”Sound bites like that make great TV. Our cul-ture admires tough-guy speak. We imaginehim getting whopped by that Nike guy andthen spending hours at the driving range try-ing to whack away the awful taste of losing.

The whole ad, and that line in particular, rein-forced my belief that very few of us are wellserved taking our competitive examples fromthe world’s elite athletes. It may be true that hehates losing, but when he’s focusing on losingthat’s also what he’s doing.

It’s a message that often comes from oursports and business leaders. They tell us thatwinners are tough, losers are weak. We are ledto believe that the top performers are greatbecause they just refuse to lose. We hear howthey “sucked it up” and snatched victory fromdefeat, and that may influence our ownapproach. It can motivate us to mimic theirintensity (“This is a test of my will”) or it canintimidate us to go the other way (“I just wantto have fun and finish respectably”).

In my mind, neither approach is the rightmodel, nor is either very sophisticated. In thefirst case, by seeing competition as a battle webecome prisoners to the outcome and itbecomes an all too consuming aspect of ourlives. In the second case, we play it safe andsettle for lower expectations or avoid racingaltogether. We all know endurance athleteswho fit into both groups. Not only do theytend to underachieve, they’re also more proneto burnout.

I believe competition is meant to play anexhilarating, not threatening, role in our lives.I expect it to be a lifelong expression with therace serving as my performance art. Like thegreat actor in a play who seeks to become thecharacter, I want to discover the subtlenuances of competitive mastery that have sofar eluded me. The total details are still foggy, but I do know I won’t get there by gritting myteeth and focusing on beating anyone else.Mastery is definitely an internal project.

Let me share a few of the keywords in theprocess.

TrustThe first is trust. It’s amazing to me how uni-versally difficult it is for us as humans to trustourselves. It’s so much easier to doubt ourreadiness, question our preparation, or worryabout how we’ll respond to the elements thanit is to trust. At the same time, we look atothers and assume theyshare none of our fears! We give them credit forhaving strengths we lack.So the first skill is practic-ing taking our eyes andenergy off others andfocusing internally.

AcceptThe second keyword thatties to trust is accept. Wedo not earn self-accept-ance, we choose it. Bysimply saying, “I acceptthat I am a gifted athlete,”you begin to believe it. Atthe same time you can choose to let go of yourdoubts. Replace your negative worries withacceptances. Accept that you have choice ofequipment, the best pre-event meal, the bestcoach and program for you, the best race strat-egy, the best supplements, and that you willhave your best race. Accept that when tested, you will summon the strength needed to rise tothe occasion. Accept that it will all work out.

PerspectiveThe third keyword is perspective. Is it ever easyto lose perspective after dedicating hundredsand hundreds of hours to this racing lifestyle. After all, we don’t sacrifice so much of our livesin order to fail. We set huge goals, life-chang-ing goals-to get to Kona, Boston, or AcrossAmerica-and the dream becomes so powerfulit takes on a life of its own. As the event nears, naturally, we become engrossed in the experi-ence. But losing perspective is one of thegreatest killers of performance. It’s a race, that’s all.

I’ve struggled with this for many of my 30years in racing. For example, as a senior in col-lege, after four failed attempts at winningNCAA All-America in track and cross-coun-try, I was down to my final chance. I arrived atthe national meet as a top seed. In all likeli-hood, a time far off my norm would have beengood enough, so you would think I would trust

Finding Inner Confidence

and accept that I was one of the best, right?Wrong. My perspective was that it was a makeor break day that would forever effect my life.Suddenly, a dozen guys all seeded slower thanme looked ready to break the world record andI didn’t sleep for two days. Fortunately, mycoach was brilliant. He sent me on a 5-mile

run away from the track justthree hours before the raceto burn off the nervous ener-gy. When I returned, helaughed and said, “This isgoing to make a great story.”The tension lifted. He said,“Tony, forget about everyoneelse and just run for you.Make this your day.” Itworked and I had a greatrace. Gaining perspective issuch a key to letting go ofpressure.

ReceiveThe final keyword that ties it

all together is receive. We are so blessed tohave this passion and an abundance of oppor-tunities to share and celebrate it with others.Rather than being motivated by a hate for los-ing, why not receive every challenge as a gift?Without a doubt, all the pain, tears, and set-backs I’ve experienced over the years have beenat least as valuable as the joys gained frombreakthrough victories. It’s all good. By beingready to receive all that comes to us in racingwith open arms, I really believe we prepareourselves to receive an almost supernaturalpower.

Re-visit this article from time-to-time duringthe season. You will discover that with prac-tice the concepts will begin to fit and applyinto your own racing. Good luck. See you atthe races!

What events do you like to compete in?

As a triathlete, I love international or olympicdistance races. They’re just long enough thatthe ability to focus is paramount to success, and yet, they’re short enough that you canrecover quickly to race within a week or two.I also appreciate the ability to race well with-out dedicating my entire life to the sport (astends to happen during training for anIronman).

How long have you been competing in thoseevents and how did you get started?

My first race was in April of 1973 so I’mstarting my 31st year a racing without a yearoff. The first 13 years were in running. I madeit to the 1984 Olympic marathon trials where,at 182 pounds, I was the heaviest guy in thefield. On top of that, my body was breakingdown from averaging 100+ miles a week for 6years. Triathlon was just hitting the big timeand I remember being intrigued that a guyalmost the size of Dave Scott was able to winthe Ironman. I jumped in and was hooked.Best of all, the overuse injuries that were part

of running just faded away with cross training.

What are some other things that you dowhen not competing?

I like variety. My wife and I love downhill ski-ing and I’m now getting into boarding as well.We also golf, or try to, and to unwind I spendtime water gardening in the 4-level pond Ibuilt in my backyard. Every athlete shouldhave one. There’s nothing like listening to thewater fall and watching your Koi (fancy carp)grow up. I even have it heated and kept it run-ning all winter so the fish survived anotherMinnesota winter.

What is a typical training day for you?

I don’t have a typical day. During the mainseason, I do 3 key runs and 3 key bike ridesevery 10 days, otherwise all runs and rides areeasy. That’s a must. I refuse to get pulled intoa fast group ride if it’s not my planned keyworkout. I fit these 6 key workouts looselyinto each 10 day cycle the best way they fit andtry to stick to it. I typically swim Monday,Wednesday and Friday mornings at the pooland in the summer add some lake swims tothe mix.

What is your favorite race/course?

Minnesota is the land of 10,000 lakes so, likeMontana, we have hundreds of lakes and sitesmore beautiful than just about every host sitefor the nation’s top event. In that way I’mspoiled by events in my home state. BeyondMinnesota, it’s hard to argue with Coeur d’Alene, Idaho for the beauty, or Kona, Hawaiifor the mystique. I have a special place in myheart for any race in New Zealand.

What has been the toughest race/course?

It’s got to be Hawaii since I’ve done it 3 timesand it remains troublesome. Hawaii aside, andcourse with cruel heat and wicked hills seemsto bring out my best.

Which E-CAPS / Hammer Nutrition sup-plements do you use and why?

I’ve used virtually all of your products goingback to the early days when I think it was justEnduro Caps and Race Caps. I started withthose and enjoyed the best 18 month stretchof my career while racing on the pro circuit. Ilater added Phytomax (because of my ques-tionable diet) and Super AO and found themhelpful. I’m now taking the PremiumInsurance Caps daily as well. Throughout the

year I mix Whey Pro into my fruit smoothiesfor protein replacement after tough workouts. And finally, two products I rely on religiouslyare Sustained Energy and Endurolytes. Thefirst time I used them both was at the 1998Gulf Coast Triathlon where, at age 40, I wonthe race outright. Without a doubt much ofthat is due to how both products kept megoing for 4 hours.

What are your goals for this season?

My peak race this year will be at the ITUWorld Championships in New Zealand inDecember. Other than that, several local andregional races.

What advice would you give to beginningathletes in regards to training and keepingmotivated?

My best advice is to decide and declare yourstake. Be bold. Whether it’s finishing yourfirst race or trying to achieve a specific quali-fying status...declare it. That act of declaringbegins to move support energy your way. Verylittle that brings great fulfillment comes with-out risk. If you tend to play it safe, go out on alimb for a change. It will be refreshing.
