Shenzhen is a beautiful city. Located south of the Tropic of Cancer at the boundary between the tropics and sub-tropics, the city boasts a warm and comfortable climate and approximately 260 kilometers of coastline, bestowing it with a pleasant coastal ambiance. Shenzhen has 911 parks, and green space covers 45% of the urban area, allowing for enjoyable metropolitan living.

Today, green low-carbon development has become a new feature of the city. Shenzhen is an advocate for reducing resource use and energy consumption to achieve higher quality economic results: Shenzhen's energy and water consumption per 10,000 RMB of GDP both rank at the lowest (best) levels for Mainland China's cities. Shenzhen's PM2.5 concentrations are also low, placing the city at the forefront of 74 key cities nationwide for air quality, and first among Tier 1 cities.

VITALITY

ECONOMY

Shenzhen continues to be China's "most connected" city, was part of the first group of Broadband China model cities, and is a pilot city in the Information for the People programme.

On the Global Financial Centres Index (GFCI) list, Shenzhen ranked as the #23 city for finance worldwide, a category in which it placed second in Mainland China.

The United Kingdom's Nature magazine listed Shenzhen as one of the "10 Best Cities in China for Scientific Research".

The Economist: "Of the world's more than 4,300 special economic zones, Shenzhen is the most successful".

Shenzhen's government was ranked first for law-abiding governance in China in the A ssessment Repor t on China's L aw-Abiding Government 2015.

Shenzhen ranked first on the China Studies Centre's (Washington D.C.) list of China's 100 best municipal governments. Shenzhen's total volume of foreign trade and the total value of its

exports both rank at the forefront of Mainland China's large cities, and its exports have led the nation for 23 consecutive years.

In 2015, Shenzhen's port handling capacity ranked third worldwide amongst container ports, and Shenzhen's Bao'an International Airport was Mainland China's fourth largest airport.

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) magazine listed Shenzhen as one of its "10 Asia-Pacific Cities of the Future".

Shenzhen's municipal government is one of China's most efficient governments, and is an advocate for the establishment of law-abiding, honest government that aims to serve. The municipality has made full use of the legislative advantages conferred by its status as a special administrative zone to establish a fair, transparent, and relaxed business environment.

To further its goals of becoming more marketized, improving its law-based governance, and becoming more international, the city has exerted great efforts to promote numerous reforms, simplify and improve administrative procedures, and decentralize government. The city is known as a domestic leader for its reform of the commercial registration system and simplification of the procedures required for company incorporation, both improvements that have inspired an enthusiasm for entrepreneurship. Shenzhen already has 2.14 million commercial entities, and its total number of commercial entities and degree of entrepreneurship continue to rank first among medium and large cities nationwide.

ADVANTAGES OF SHENZHEN

Shenzhen has been ranked first by Forbes China three times on its listing of Mainland China's best cities for innovation.

Advances in scientific research achieved in Shenzhen have been listed in Science and Nature magazines' top 10 global scientific breakthroughs of the year, and prominent scientists and technology specialists from the city have likewise been selected onto these publications' top ten in science lists.

Shenzhen once again ranked #1 on the China Institute of City Competitiveness's Top 10 Mainland Chinese Cities for Innovation 2015.

INNOVATION

Innovation provides the lifeblood of Shenzhen's economic development. Shenzhen was China's first National Innovative City, a member of the first group of National Intellectual Property Rights Model Cities, and the first city to be named a Self-Innovation Demonstration Zone. In 2015, total investment from across all sectors of Shenzhen’s society into research and development represented 4.05% of the municipality's GDP, a proportion rivaling that of South Korea. 13,300 PCT international patent applications were filed in 2015, 46.9% of the total number filed across all of China, and this marked the 12th consecutive year that Shenzhen accounted for approximately half of the entire nation's PCT applications.

Already known as "China's Silicon Valley" and as a paradise for innovation and entrepreneurship, Shenzhen is now also committed to forging itself into an international maker center, and its excellent reputation has attracted makers from around the world.

Shenzhen is on the United Nation's Environment Programme's Global 500 Roll of Honour, and is the first "International Garden City" in China.

Shenzhen has one of China's "Eight Most Beautiful Coastlines", and was selected by the New York Times as one of 31 Places to Go worldwide.

Shenzhen was selected as "one of the three most popular Mainland Chinese cities with foreign talent" by International Talent magazine.

Shenzhen is a fantastically vibrant city. The average Shenzhen resident is 33 years old, and the large number of highly cultured people gathered here ensures that a love of learning and respect for science permeates the city.

95% of Shenzhen's population has moved to the city from elsewhere, and the resulting cultural exchanges have given the city an open and inclusive character—the city's residents have embraced the philosophy that"once you've come, you're a Shenzhener." Shenzhen also boasts an innovative culture that encourages innovation and does not stigmatize failure, and an entrepreneurial “innovate or perish” spirit.

Shenzhen enjoys an excellent reputation among university students, and is also one of the first cities chosen by students returning from studies overseas to start businesses. In addition, a large number of foreign individuals and Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan residents live and work in Shenzhen on a permanent basis.

Shenzhen has been honored by UNESCO as a Global Model for The Promotion of Reading.

Shenzhen has 1,209,000 registered volunteers, leading to the city being called a "City of Volunteers";Shenzhen was also bestowed with the title "National Model City for Harmonious Community Building", thanks in part to its 668 community service centers.

Shenzheners collectively own more than 285,000 pianos, meaning there are more than 10 pianos owned for ever y 100 resident households, and the city is also known as a "Piano City."

Shenzhen's robust and comprehensive market economy make it the most "marketized" city in Mainland China. Shenzhen is proud of its fair market environment that gives full respect to enterprise, and companies that make their home in Shenzhen enjoy bright developmental opportunities. Shenzhen has led all cities in Mainland China for nine years consecutively in the total number of its local enterprises listing on the SME and ChiNext boards of the Shenzhen Stock Exchange. 270 of the world's Global 500 enterprises have investments in Shenzhen.

Over the past 30+ years, Shenzhen's average annual GDP growth has been 25%, making it one of the world's fastest developing cities, and allowing this former small fishing village to complete a metamorphosis, nearly overnight, into one of China's most economically developed metropolises. In 2015, Shenzhen's GDP reached 1.75 trillion RMB, and the size of its economy continued to rank fourth among Mainland China's medium and large cities, with a per capita GDP of 158,000 RMB.

Shenzhen possesses an international deep water port and adjacent facilities, a large international airport, and the largest land port of entry in China. The municipality is also a hub of China's highway, railway and passenger transport systems.

Shenzhen is part of the Pearl River Delta, a region that has infrastructure, equipment, and facilities unequaled elsewhere in the world. From Shenzhen, almost any part or piece of equipment needed for industry can be purchased with less than an hour's drive, meaning that achievements in scientific research can be quickly transformed into innovative products. There is no appreciable distance between Shenzhen and the world's most developed markets—the crossing with Hong Kong is open 24 hours a day, and Hong Kong airport is only an hour's ride away. Products can be sent on their way to anywhere in the world within an hour of being manufactured and leaving the factory via the ports of entry/exit connecting Shenzhen and Hong Kong.
