Editorial

This commemorative Special Issue is dedicated to our energycommunity (authors, reviewers, editors) on the occasion ofthe 40th anniversary of the journal. This issue includes the excitingtrajectory of the journal, since its origin in 1976, told by the 3Editors-in-Chief, Stanford S. Penner, Noam Lior and Henrik Lund.

It also contains a selection of the most important and impactfulstudies of the journal. During its 40 years of history, ENERGY haspublished about 10,000 papers. Out of these we selected 40 articlesfor this 40 year anniversary special issue. It has not been easy tolimit ourselves since there are a huge number of excellent papersto choose from. We have found some of the best papers of Energyand at the same time tried to represent the history of the journalin terms of variety of subjects and authors. To show the evolutionof the journal, we cherry-picked to publish one article from eachyear starting with 1976, in which only 38 papers were published,

after published and ending up with 2015 in which 1289 paperswere published. As a starting point we identified the most highlycited article of each year. However, we have moderated this list tomake sure we have a good representation of the many aspects ofthe journal.
