…But, we are not on track
The annual rate of improvement in global primary energy intensity has been slowing in recent years,
dropping from a high of nearly 3% in 2015 to 1.9% in 2017, and falling again to 1.3% in 2018.

Modernising energy efficiency through digitalisation
The IEA has launched a cross-agency initiative to explore the potential impacts of digitalisation on
energy efficiency and implications for policy makers.
• Ensuring end-use efficiency
Greater control and optimisation
New business models
Enabling behaviour change
• Enabling system efficiency
Optimal use of infrastructure
Integrating variable renewables
More precise valuation of efficiency resources
• Enhancing policy efficiency
Precise targeting & implementation
Improved market surveillance
Granular data and robust M&V

Digitalisation can accelerate and scale up end-use efficiency…
Digitalization has the potential to reshape, modernise, transform demand-side sectors.
Policies are essential to maximise benefits and reap energy saving opportunities.
Transport
• Key digital trends across all
modes: connectivity, sharing, and
automation
• Digital solutions for trucks and
logistics could reduce energy use
for road freight by 20-25%
Buildings
• Smart building controls will
improve comfort and transform
building energy use
• Globally, buildings energy use
could be reduced by 10% to 2040
Industry
• Digital energy management
systems enable real time data and
control
• Plant level savings in the region of
10 – 20% of energy use (just
through optimization)

Policies for digitalisation
• Globally, governments are undergoing
“digital transformations”
• Frameworks have been developed to
promote good practice digital policy
• IEA will identify policy factors to support
digital energy efficiency
• This will build on existing work, including:
- Going Digital Integrated Policy Framework
(OECD, 2019)
- No regrets policy recommendations for
digitalisation and energy (IEA, 2017)
