MAKING THE CHANGE
It’s only lighting so that should be easy – so what do I need to do and where do I start?
www.thelia.org.uk 2
I’ll go and see our maintenance team……
Our contractors should know …..
What about the electrical distributors we use …….
I’ll speak to our architects ……
BUT ….
Across the wider Lighting Community
Contractors Energy
Managers Electrical
Distributors
Facility
Managers
are all struggling with……
Products not reaching full potential or failing
Where to go or who to go to
Knowing what they need to know

MANUFACTURERS Brilliant new products with massive energy saving potential but are we getting the best from them?
Not yet & why?
THE LIGHTING INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION
THE REASON
EDUCATION
www.thelia.org.uk 5
Historically
education in the
Lighting Industry has
been rather
neglected
More complex
schemes have the
benefit of an
architect or lighting
designer
Maintenance never
needed in depth
planning
Disparate and limited selection of training and advice available
The end product was
relatively simple to
understand and the
potential was fairly
limited

Addressing the problem

As the trade association for the Industry the LIA has recognised the
need and invested in introducing the Academy
The Academy has been created as an umbrella to bring together
learning & learners right across the lighting community
Providing confidence that learning undertaken is of high quality and
the Lighting Community
Collaboration across industry to create the portfolio of learning that
will unlock the full potential of todays lighting products
Creating individual records of learning, career paths and a range of
formal qualifications

ACADEMY LEARNING
Building a portfolio of quality learning for Industry

Collaborating with
key industry bodies
& manufacturers to
become Academy
Associates
Establishing
relationships with
providers of industry
& wider learning to
become Provider
Partners
Launching the
Academy
Recognition Process
(ARP) as the
mechanism to
ensure learning is ‘fit
for purpose
Investing in wider
LIA learning and a
redeveloped modular

2: Flickering
LED Lamps / Light Fittings will flicker if you do not have a
stable power supply.
Manufacturers understand the use of the correct LED
Driver, Power Supply and Controls will ensure a flicker
free installation

3: Glare
LED Light Fittings are now available with a wide range of diffusers and designs. In addition to these being more aesthetically appealing, they are more comfortable to work under.
There is a recommended Glare Index from CIBSE for offices, it is <19. You should check with the manufacturers data sheets that their fittings comply.

4: Life Time
LED’s do not suddenly stop working.
The light output diminishes over time. Most Manufacturers will give a lifetime rating for their LED Product. This is usually in Hours and at 70% of the initial light output.
With the advances of manufacturing, LED Lifetimes are now 30,000 / 50,000 hours. 3 Years or 5 Years or longer
Check with the manufacturer the facts of the product warranty

5: Cost
With the improvement of manufacturing processes LED Prices for both Lamps and Light Fittings are falling.
3 Years ago an LED Panel would cost in the region of £75.00.
Today the cost will be in the region of £29.00, 60% Less.
Interest Free or Low Interest Loans are available to help with the initial cost. Talk to the Carbon Trust or Salix for details
