Abstract

The rapid expansion in data centers, due to the

exponential growth of the cloud computing has caused

the sudden increase in energy consumption and its effect

on the environment in terms of the carbon lost. To

reduce the power consumption, it is required to develop

some energy efficient solutions. The Green Computing is

the practice of executing policies and the procedures to

improve efficiency of the computing resources in such a

way as to reduce the energy consumption and

environmental impact of their utilization. Green Cloud

Architecture is rising from these trends leading, not only

to energy efficiency, but also a carbon emission aware

concept. In order to reduce energy consumption, a green

environment needs to be construct[1]

Keywords: Green cloud computing, energy

efficiency, CO2 emission

Introduction

Green means eco-friendly while the cloud is the

representative of the internet service delivery model.

Green computing is also known as green information

technology (green IT).

Green computing introduces eco-friendly and

environmentally responsible usage of computers and

their resources associated with the IT industry and

services. In other words, it involves the designing,

engineering, and usage of computing devices in such a

way that it can reduce any destructiveeffect on the

environmental impact in the IT industry.

Green computing aims to attain economic viability and

improve the way computing devices are used. Green IT

practices involved the development of environment

sustainable production practices, energy-efficient

computers and improved disposal and recycling

procedures.

The five core green computing technologies are: Green

Data Center, Virtualization, Green Cloud Computing,

Power Optimization and Grid Computing.

Objectives

The main objective is to establish a new data centre

which consumes less amount of energy and releases

minimum amount of harmful gases into the environment.

It is possible only when we calculate the amount of

energy exhaust now in the existing system.

The purpose of green cloud computing is to develop the

recyclability or biodegradability of dead products and

factory waste by reducing the use of hazardous materials

and maximizing the energy efficiency during the

product's life span. [6]

Literature survey:

To promote green computing concepts, the following

four approaches are used:

• Green use: Minimizing the electricity

consumption of computers and their peripheral

devices and using them in an eco-friendly

manner

• Green disposal: Reuse of an existing equipment

or appropriately disposing of, or recycling,

unwanted electronic equipment

• Green design: Designing energy-efficient

computers, servers, printers, projectors and

other digital devices

• Green manufacturing: Minimizing waste during

the manufacturing of computers and other

subsystems to reduce the environmental effect

of these task[2]

Impact of Cloud Computing

Data centers are expensive to maintain, and also

unfriendly to the environment. Carbon emission due to

Data Centers worldwide is now more than both

Argentina and the Netherlands emission. High energy

costs and huge carbon footprints are incurred due to the

massive amount of electricity needed to power and cool

the numerous servers hosted in these data centers. [3]

We need green cloud computing solutions that

not only save energy, but also reduces the operational

costs and enrich environment sustainability.[13]

Green cloud computing

Green computing is the study and practice of

environmentally sustainable computing or Information

Technology. The green computing can be achieved by

reducing the overall power consumption. This can be

accomplished by redesigning the infrastructure of

network by reducing the number of servers, switches and

cables or by applying the different power consumption

schemes and patterns.[14]

Core component of Green Cloud Computing

Data Center: Data center is a subdivision of information

and communication technology service provider

organization where this organization can operate most of

the ICT infrastructure that supports to their clients. the

network system devices used in creating data centers are

switches, links and servers.

In the Green Cloud architecture, users submit their Cloud

service requests through a new middleware Green

Broker that manages the selection of the greenest Cloud

provider to serve the user’s request. A green request can

be of three types i.e., software, platform or infrastructure.

The Cloud providers can register their services in the

form of “green offers” to a public directory which is

accessed by Green Broker. The green offers consist of

green services, pricing and time when it should be

accessedfor least carbon emission. Green Broker gets the

current status of energy parameters for using various

Cloud services from Carbon Emission Directory. The

Carbon Emission Directory maintains all the data related

to energy efficiency of Cloud service. This data may

include PUE and cooling efficiency of Cloud datacenter

which is providing the service, the network cost and

carbon emission rate of electricity, Green Broker

calculates the carbon emission of all the Cloud providers

who are offering the requested Cloud service. Then, it

selects the set of services that will result in least carbon

emission and buy these services on behalf users.

The Green Cloud framework is designed to make their

service clean by keeping track of overall energy usage of

serving a user request. It relies on two main components,

Carbon Emission Directory and Green Cloud offers. [3]

Virtualization in Green Cloud Computing

Virtualization means to create a virtual version of a

device or resource, such as a server, storage device,

network or even an operating system where the

framework divides the resource into one or more

execution environments.[10]

Virtualization is the main key factor for Cloud

Computing to attain sustainability from the cost and

energy efficient point of view.[11]

There are two types of virtualization which are widely

used.

a) Server Virtualization: Virtual server allows several

machines to share the same physical server to run instead

of having their own server.

b) Storage Virtualization: Storing data across multiple

servers

Load Balancing

Load Balancing in Cloud Load balancing in clouds is a

mechanism that distributes the excess load evenly across

many servers. This technique is used to achieve user

satisfaction and resource utilization this helps in high

performance improvement.

a) Reducing Energy Consumption: Load balancing

helps in avoiding overheating by balancing the workload

across many servers.[4]

b) Reducing Carbon Emission: As the energy

consumption is reduced by load balancing. So we can

reduce the carbon emission by which we can achieve

green computing.[4]

Key Benefits of Green Computing

The concept of Green cloud computing has come after

the addition ofgreen with the cloud computing. The

green cloud presents a simulation environment for

energy aware cloud computing data centers.

This technology is beneficial as it:

Reduces energy consumption of computing

resources during peak operation.

Saves energy during idle operation.

Uses eco-friendly sources of energy.

Reduces harmful effects of computing

resources.

Reduces computing waste.

Conclusion:

Using green policies reduce carbon emission by almost

20%.Even though green cloud framework implant

various features to make cloud computing much more

green, there are still technological solutions are required

to make it a reality.
