KOC Conducts Large-scale Catastrophic Accident DrillAs part of KPC’s Crisis Management Plan

KOC recently carried out a large-scale drill that covered catastrophic accident scenarios as part of the Crisis Management Plan implemented by KPC and its subsidiaries. The drill took place at the Central Mixing Manifold outside Burgan Field and near the checkpoint leading to the area.

The drill was carried out by the Emergency Response Unit from the Support Services Team at the KOC Fire Group. It was held in collaboration with the Export Operations Group and included a simulation of a large explosion, casualties, and an outbreak of a massive fire that badly damaged pipelines and led to oil spills that affected nearby areas.

The drill also simulated a terrorist threat scenario, as the cause of the explosion was determined to be the result of the actions of a hostile group. The explosion could have been followed by more incidents that affected other facilities, and security teams had to respond accordingly during the drill, officials said.

The goal of the drill was to verify the Crisis Management Plan, which includes the roles and responsibilities distributed to all workers within the Crisis Management Center at the Company. It also aimed to assess the capabilities, communication systems and coordination abilities of emergency responders within the Company and among K-Companies. It also aimed to provide information necessary for the production of a report that included areas that may need to improve as a result of what was observed in the exercise.

SPWLA’s Kuwait chapter, chaired by Team Leader Fields Development (EK) Salem Al-Sabea, recently concluded its sixth event of the fiscal year. It will resume its activities after summer.

Aly Bassiouny, from Weatherford International, delivered a lecture at the event, which was also the last one on “New LWD Technologies for Unconventional Reservoirs.” He explained how LWD spectral azimuthal gamma ray (SAGR) sensors provide a number of valuable measurements for horizontal well placement and evaluation in unconventional reservoirs, including uranium, potassium and thorium concentration.

Previously, Chris Mcllroy from Haliburton delivered a lecture on “Developments in 3-Phase Reservoir Monitoring with Pulsed Neutron Tools.” He presented the latest advancements in the pulsed neutron technology, which include significant improvements in direct Gas Saturation and 3-Phase Reservoir Saturation Monitoring.

New measurements such as direct Gas Saturation and Thru-Tubing KUTh, as well as combinability with Cement Evaluation and PLT tools, have made possible the enhancement of 3-Phase Reservoir Saturation Monitoring in a wide variety of reservoir and completion conditions and in measuring potassium, uranium and thorium.
